Boy did everyone need this win. Something had to give right? From the coaching staff to the players to the disheartened fans at least for one night things finally went right after a seemingly endless stretch of bad luck, bad defense and bad flu strains. Two programs desperate facing different. challenges. Mick Cronin has called out his team as soft and not as good as they think they are and was booted from the last game at Maryland. On top of that the devestating fires back in California which worsened while the Bruins were headed to the East Coast has to be playing on their minds in a big way. The uncertainity of what life is back home for their loved ones and their families and friends trumps anything in a basketball game. Yet basketball still plays on. What Rutgers did was take advantage of struggling and distracted Bruin team and certainly make no apologies for doing it. Rutgers easily could have mailed it in at 8-8 with NCAA hopes a pipe dream. Yet they didn't. They did it in the most sharing and caring game of teamwork that I have seen ALL YEAR long from the 2024-2025 unit. This was not the Dylan and Ace show with maybe help from one other guy, this was a story of a game where every single player contributed something at some point to secure this win. That it wasnt the Ace and Dylan show might be the biggest leap forward in developmen that this team has taken all year long

Obviously Pikiell and staff had alot of soul searching after the Purdue and Wisconsin 2nd halves which saw the Rutgers offense reside in frozen toilet. Obviously Dylan being 10% for Wisconsin and 30% for Purdue hurts alot but it didnt explain everything nor should it. I would say even tonight Dylan was only maybe 75% but that is okay because others finally stepped up to help him and Ace. Lets start with the shakeup by Pike starting Summerville, Grant, and Acuff with Harper/Ace. First time we have seen that particular lineup. It didnt really play dividends early as RU got off to a poor start down 7-0 and were a bit surprised by the UCLA press. . I think where it payed off was lighting a fire under some other players coming off the bench. When Pike starting subbing RU started waking up and seemed to have more pep in their step in challlenging UCLA on the defensive end and on the boards. A particular key stretch got RU back from a 7 point defecit and down to 1 led by the play of EO and Zak who played a really solid stretch. EO with some boards and a dunk and Zak with a huge 3 and even though he missed two others, one was in and popped out, Zak also got to the line where he made 1-2. I know baby steps with Zak right. I think he held his own on both ends of the court. J Mike had some good minutes and J Will was playing solid. Ace and Dylan were good but not great. I got the sense RU would need to elevate their game at some point offensively to pull this one out. Rutgers overall wasnt exactly in sync on offense but more important Rutgers was able to hang in there because they really started to slow UCLA down. The easy open looks the Bruins got early and there were many of them they bricked were not as available. RU defense was bothering their flow and that really continued all game long as it was likely was RUs best full game defensive effort of the season. Never did you get the notion that UCLA was going to go a run. This was going to be a grind out type win that Pike loves to play and thread the needle. Question is would Rutgers have enough to get over the hump.

So how many times do you hear the cliche "the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half" are going to be huge. Well huge is an understatement. Those first 90 seconds were the turning point of the game and RU would never relinquish the lead although there was one brief tie. Ace with a putback on a Lathan miss started things off and then there was Dylan dropping back to back haymakers that had RU suddenly up 38-33, Mick Cronin calling a full timeout and the RAC roaring like a freight train. Unlike the last 2 home games and the one at Indiana, Rutgers did not have to play comeback and this time they had a healthier Harper with an involved crowd. That is always a recipe for success under Pikiell when his charges are dialed in and committed to play defense. The Bruins were out of whack and while they hung with Rutgers somewhat, you just got the feeling that they did not really have the fight in them. Tyson Acuff by all rights didnt have his best game and its likely because I think him and Harper/Ace on the court at the same time isnt the best combo. Yet he hit a big 3 that broke the tie at 41 where RU wouldnt look back. RU was getting further contributions by Emmanuel but the one guy who really stepped up his game was Jeremiah Williams. Heavily criticized the last few weeks because of just inconsistent plays and sometimes not even showing up at all. Its impossible to think RU can win games without him being a big factor on defense and contributing 10 or more points. Tonight we got the JWill we thought we were going to have. With Ace/Dylan slowed up and our offense in that usual funk it gets into J Will hit back to back layups to push the RU lead to 7 its largest of the game.

After that it would be quite a stretch of gutting it out and it was done in an unlikely way at the foul line of all places. Over the next 3 minutes, RU would go a perfect 8-8 at the line with 2 by Lathan, 2 by Ace and stunningly 4-4 from J Mike. Patient and strategical this team drew fouls and UCLA was foolish enough to put RU at the line. RU wasnt hitting them at a good rate before that, not sure of the exact number but it was ugly. But here again you have another stretch where its not Dylans heroics, its the RU free throw bugaboo becoming its strength. Suddenly RU up by 9 at 63-54 with about 4:30 to go. The RAC started to feel it a bit but again here is the challenge for this team. Trying to sustain or build off of leads has been pretty futile all year long. Even in the win over Penn State, RU had lost its 15 point lead and was desperately trying to hold sway to the last possession. Like clockwork UCLA starts chipping away and RU dries up offensively going 0-5 fg and in just a 2 and half minute stretch UCLA goes on a 8-0 after a huge 3 pointer to cut the lead to 63-62. Here we go again. A loss here would be crushing beyond belief.

Well big time players make big shots. Ace has a knack for hitting some big 3s in the last few minutes but none was bigger than the one from the corner with the shot clocking winding down. RU back up 66-62 with a bit of breathing room. UCLA made only one of 2 layups and J Will found a nice hole to the hoop laying in a score to put RU up 5 and with the RAC crowd urging the Knights on another stop and 2 more free throws from Lathan put RU up 70-63 and that was basically all she wrote. UCLA did hit a 3 but after being pressured the inbound, RU was able to get it to an open Ace for an easy layup and one. Ace coming up big late with timely shots but a perfect night at the line. Rutgers winning with a tenacious Steve Pikiell defense and while Dylan definitely was a factor in the win, he was no more a factor than anyone else. It truly was a team effort tonight. Congrats to each and every player (that played as Hayes/Derkack got DNPs) and the coaching staff. Was not an easy game to win having to shake off the losing and the negativity and being able to put away a team in a bit of turmoil. No style points and some not so pretty moments but RU did what they had to do which is hold serve at home.

To touch on some stats. I believe in the first half everyone that played except for Acuff scored. To me a good sign and rebounding being pretty even at half was a good sign. In the 2nd half RU outboarded UCLA and won that final battle 37-29. Yes I felt UCLA was indeed soft and didnt think they were willing to be physical to crash the boards. RU hit 13 of their final 15 free throws...absolutely huge. Before that they were just 8 of 16. Getting to the line 31 times is big time. Do not talk to me about refs. RU got some favorable calls in general tonight IMO but so what, these thing do even out. I like that the coaching staff took advantage of drawing fouls. I know the Harper fouls got groans but I think they were legit and Cronin should have done everything in his power to foul Dylan out but simply didnt.

Individually great to see Ace bounce back after two poor showing in a row. 7-13 fg, 20 points earning a double double with 10 boards, hitting all 5 of his foul shots and how about 3 blocks. I really think Ace took a step forward today in his best defensive outing of the season. Dylan was just 5-13 fg, 4 boards, 4 assists but also 4 turnover. He had some nifty moves to the hoop that UCLA couldnt even challenge but Dylan was like I said probably only 70-75% so one more game and he should have his sea legs back and be at close to full strength for Nebraska. J Will 5-7 fg 11 points....we need this from him every night to win games in league play, its as simple as that. 26 minutes but off the bench but ended up playing just as much as Acuff was ineffective for much of his time. JMike 6 points and hitting all 4 of his ft but his solid defense and being able to navigate through the Ucla pressure doesnt show up in the stat line. EO was solid tonight in 15 minutes and 5 boards. Lathan 6 points and a whopping 9 boards in 24 minutes. Acuff and Martini just with one 3 each but Zak did well in 14 minutes. Dylan Frant hit his first shot, a 3 and didnt hit another going 1-4 fg, 0-2 ft for 3 points but had 2 blocks and 2 boards in a meaningful 24 minutes. His energy he provides is an x factor and he is gaining invaluable experience right now. DNP for Hayes and Derkack...the DNP for the latter is eyebrowing raising but dont expect that to be a regular thing. He will be called upon again.

RAC crowd was loud at times albeit not all that consistent. I think some may have feared a collapse late. I think this crop of students are weak. I see its not even all students there and I only see like 5 or 6 rows evening caring that Wonderwall is being played...so thats my only complaint of the night

It also is just a relief to actually be able to have a recap that can go into the plays of the game rather than the past 3 games. Truly did not know what to expect tonight. Both schools came into this game reeling. Could Rutgers drop all 3 of their home games? Was UCLA really going to lose 4 in a row? It was certainly a game that both programs needed albeit perhaps for different reasons. While UCLA is sputtering they still have quality wins right now and a couple game cushion than Rutgers. They have wins at Oregon and over Arizona/Gonzaga in non conference play. If the tourney was selected right now they are still a tourney team. RU was fortunate to not get the team that won at Oregon but dont cry for the Briuns. Rutgers needed this game more. Not for NCAA tourney, do not even think about that. Rutgers needed this for themselves, the coaching staff, the fans. Backs against the walls, Rutgers took the opportunity facing a talented yet vulnerable UCLA team and now it at least gives them to have an opportunity to have another opportunity at Nebraska. For now it is a one game season. 1-0 every game. I have no idea if they are capable of doing that more than here or there but thats what we have to find out going forward. Stack 3 more of these together and then we shall revisit any hope of salvaging NCAA goals.

Good stuff. Tonight was a big sigh of relief.
yep, doesnt mean we are in back in business for the NCAA but it is our BEST WIN of the season. There are alot of reasons that UCLA is sputtering but this is a very good team that won at Oregon. On their best day, UCLA overall is better than us IMO because of the depth of their talent overall. Neither team played their best tonight but beating UCLA is something that never happens around these parts and I think its sort of lost in the disappointment thus far that a storied program like that came into the RAC and we beat them.

Agreed with your point about JWill and JMike feeling like they got a kick in the butt type of motivation by moving to the bench. JMike played great against the UCLA press ans we were struggling and JWill provided some key buckets late in the game. Let’s see if this lineup can now provide some repeatable consistency moving forward. One game at a time with this new starting lineup and rotation mix. Let’s see if they can repeat this against Nebraska, I am going to have to see it to believe it for multiple games. Defense and rebounding actually showed up tonight.

I think Pike did a good job with lineups and rotations tonight
He had the right guys on the floor to start the second half, as you say the most important minutes of the game and when RU finally took control
Those guys need to be on the floor together for a majority of the game
JWill played better off the bench tonight as opposed to starting and trying to do to much.
Hopefully we get more of that
Jmike the same!

the Wisconsin game despite the loss and this game were played at a different tempo and to me was more like watching a Pike team from old. Now its not the prettiest to watch and offensively we can struggle. In the Wisconsin game nothing went in the last 8-9 minutes. Tonight, we found ways to get to the line and then had guys hit some big shots which you simply have to do to win. UCLA had a tough d. My take is UCLA is struggling with confidence and Ive seen them fold in similar spots vs Nebraska and Maryland and they did tonight even if they pulled it to 1.

Nebraska is going to be tough...They are very experienced bunch and we are starting 4 freshmen. Tough D but they can score alot...no Japanese guy this year so that helps but they are more balanced. Very very tough to beat at home. If Rutgers wins they will be showing some real moxy. To me though again one game at a time, thats how i was watching this game tonight and it was more enjoyable rather than frettting about missing the ncaa tourney.

They showed some guts tonight so we’ll see what this team can do. But it’s just one game so best we take it one game at a time. Tonight was fun though, would love to see some more fun basketball like tonight’s game.

Was ar the game the team was in good spirits in warmup and a good feeling before the game.

Arena looked half empty at the start, but filled in and was a very good atmosphere. Team played like most of us expected at the beginning of the season.

Time for a streak!

lol, as hard as it is for us optimists, we can’t even think about a streak. All that matters is Nebraska.

JWill, JMike and Ogbole looked better coming off the bench.

Rutgers really benefited from the tight man to man defense that UCLA played. It was like UCLA didn’t bother to scout Rutgers. Instead of packing the middle or playing off players like Jeremiah, they played everyone tight and allowed Jeremiah and other players to drive to the basket. Normally Rutgers struggles against teams that play off Rutgers players and take away driving lanes. If UCLA had a shot blocker to protect the rim it wasn’t apparent from how they played. That being said, RU took advantage offensively and played well defensively, especially in the second half.

Loved that RU dominated on the boards in the 2nd half. Toughness. Lathan, with his build, is going to be a major force rebounding. UCLA has some huge guys and we outworked them. Loved it!

This recap really should not make any excuses for the wildfires.... this team has been on the East Coast and while tragic, I won't allow any of that to take away from the effort on UCLAs end at all. They played a solid 1st half and didn't have the ability to stay in front of driving guards until the game was in RUs control.

Here is the recap.

Lathan-Starting
Acuff-Starting
Ace-solid performance and defense
Dylan Harper-closer to 100% and playmaking.
Grant-solid and much more competitive defense in post and on perimeter.

24 for RU and Sommerville is important, because the team HAS to dump the ball into the post once in awhile....Lathan can play better and play stronger, but he draws contact and can score in the post......ADD Ogbole off the bench and he's CLEARLY more suited as a role player.....taking some pick and rolls to Ogbole against backup players in the B1G, works better than starters.

24 minutes for Dylan Grant and solid, competitive level defense. He got beat guarding Eric Dailey, when he should have shut off Dailey going left, but Cronin post game discussing about "missing open shots".

I cannot stress enough that if you have length arriving from the mid range to the 3 point line and it's Dylan Grant extended to bother a shot, instead of a Tyson Acuff, Jordan Derkack or JMike Davis, the shooter is going to feel the difference having to shoot over a Grant......same thing in the paint, Grant has a presence that helped Lathan Sommerville grab rebounds, because the shooter was challenged and when the shot drops short, Lathan gobbles up the rebound. Those shots UCLA missed were forced because Grant and Sommerville play "OK to solid" paint defense.

One player impacts the entire feel of the paint. If there were a couple of lobs that Ogbole mistakingly took away that were intended for Grant, we might have had a dunk.

On offense....if you run a high pick and roll and make Ace the corner 3 point shooter instead of Grant or Martini, when Dylan curls off the pick and attacks, he should have TWO options.....on the one before the half, he had Ace crawling baseline for the alley oop dunk......which NO team can defend IF you have Grant and Ace on the floor together.

If you run that play and plant Ace at the left wing at the 3 point line and let Grant crawl the baseline, teams cannot guard BOTH Ace at the 3 and the baseline lob for Grant......OR flip flop Grant at the 3 point wing and Ace attacking the baseline with Dylan Harper off a high screen from Sommerville.

If it's Derkack in the corner, he's not shooting that 3 well enough and is not a lob/dunk finisher.....if it's Martini, the defense just stays attached to the shooters at the line and it allows Dylan Harper to drive....

It comes down to personnel changes and you don't get 7 blocks as a team unless the individual defense on the ball, in the paint, is able to hold up the player enough, so a weakside defender, can close the door on the shooter and block the shot. Ace had both on the ball blocks and weakside....Grant had 2 blocks on weakside help.

UCLA struggled because the interior defense was more challenging....not the wildfires or anything else....the Grant impact in 24 minutes HELPS Ogbole and Sommerville battle on the boards....they no longer have to try and swat a shot away, they can let Grant do the dirty work in the post defense and just attack the shot off the rim.

Does this mean the rebounding and defensive issues are solved?? NO, not at all, but it's one thing to ask 6'4 to 6'5 Jordan Derkack to play post or paint defense and asking Dylan Grant at 6'7", with longer arms to compete in the paint.

Maybe Derkack 24 minutes and Grant still bolted to the bench with 0, means a 5 to 7 point loss for RU last night. That is your recap....#9 into the starting lineup and interior and perimeter defense dramatically improves from awful to average/competitive.

Great recap and exciting game, but please clean up inbounding. Note to the bigs, stop with putting the ball on the floor, and ask teammates to pass anywhere above the knees.

Agreed. But - will say I was really impressed with Lathans hustle on D and the boards. He’s going to be really good - especially when he’s drawing fouls inside with his O.

Granted it was because Dylan was sick, but you can't lose at home to Wisconsin. Combine that with the KSU and Princeton losses and the hole is just too big. How do we make up those 3 losses and finish strong when we have Michigan twice and a whole bunch of road games? Stealing the next two away games at Nebraska and PSU would make up for two of those losses, but that's a huge ask.

I would love for this to not age well but just look at our remaining schedule. It's brutal.

Granted it was because Dylan was sick, but you can't lose at home to Wisconsin. Combine that with the KSU and Princeton losses and the hole is just too big. One game at a time.

How does Grant finally start getting some PT? He is the only guy on the roster that has the attributes we needed on the court. Very strange.

Interesting about Derkack's DNP but it was definitely necessary. There's been no player for me more frustrating this year because he does a lot of things well that can help RU (aggressive defender, good backcourt rebounder, and beating his man off the dribble) but he makes so many offensive possession killing decisions that makes him a liability when he's on the floor. He has the worst 3P% on the team yet has thrown up the 6th most and he has an awful 43.4% shooting percentage at the rim and yet has the most attempts outside of Dylan and Ace.

He has to understand that he's not playing in the NEC anymore and that his role is not to try to create his own shot. He was a large reason for the offensive explosion against Monmouth because he made the right decision, whether it was finding the open man or continuing the drive if it's there, after beating his man on the perimeter rather than forcing up shots.

NJH....I need Ace making more cuts off the ball. I think we got 3 easy baskets with Grant Davis and Ace making hard cuts off the ball and our guards seeing them. Ace is too easy to defend hanging out in the corner.

I do think we need to see Ace and Dylan working together with the other 3 on the weakside and make the opposition choose what to do.

Excellent review.

Funny almost taking how good Dylan and Ace are for granted. Ace another double double as freshman with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ho hum? Lol! Mind boggling.
Dylan with 18 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assists. Just incredible.

Thought JWill was the key to the game with the spark off the bench with fast quick smart athletic drives and the reverse layups. For what seems like the first time in a few years, for someone not named Dylan Harper, we were actually making layups. Reminded me of JWill when he first arrived last year.

The two headed center worked yesterday. Sommerville and Ogbole combining for 14 rebounds. I think we all see the potential Sommerville has and have to believe he will the focal point of our offense next year. Ogbole has taken a lot of justifiable heat on this board but he is also slowly but surely improving(Is it enough?). Yesterday 2 out of three shooting and 5 rebounds was a very nice little game.

The importance of outside shooting!! Although Acuff and Martini did not have great statistical games, each hitting a big three were factors in the game. UCLA had to account for the possibility. Perhaps even more importantly, the body language of both they were confident and capable that they could hit the three and I think spread to their teammates.

Finally JMike going 4-4 from the line was a revelation and more importantly again the confidence. These weren’t the typical foul shots that bounced off the front iron then the back iron and plopped in but confident Cam/ Derek/Mack/Billet swishes. Big points in game too.

Myles’ RUCLA shirt was clever but did look more UCLAish than Rutgersish. Glad he sat behind the RU bench.

Maybe it was good luck to move Todd Frazier across the arena.

Schiano looked good and appears that he lost weight.

Fred Hill Jr was in the house. Thought he deserved a shot out.

Think it’s cool that the Governor and his wife attend so many games.

Negatives: Two biggies!!!

Foul Shooting was again atrocious. We hit our foul shots this isn’t a close game. UCLA was 12-15 and it kept them in the game. Thankfully we were clutch and improved in the end game but 21-31 is not good enough and will hurt us on the road.

Why do we start out so flat? A brand new starting lineup and we still come out so so flat. 7-0?? It has hurt us all year and we have been unable to make up the deficits most of the time. Takes the RAC crowd right out of the game and expend so much effort to get back into the game. It will kill us on the road. Love Pike and I’m a fan but maybe not taking warmups serious enough. Have to try something different. Slow starts way too often.

Know must be gut wrenching for UCLA and feel for them… But it’s still a win over UCLA at the RAC/Jersey Mikes.

Go RU and beat Nebraska!

Twice in a row in NJ over UCLA.
Last time (1981) they were #2 and it was the first college hoops game at the meadowlands

Any miracle run is going to require not only defending home court rest of the season, but winning a bunch of road games

Nebraska and PSU are winnable... let's go on a run. A young talented team with momentum and confidence is dangerous

Dylan is only getting healthier and we know what he can do

Ace has becomes a much better rebounder and defender. His shot selection last night was the best all season

Grants and Acuff with bigger roles changes team dynamics

Lathan much improved post defense and intensity. Rebounding much better as well

Almost impossible for the role players in general to play as bad as they did during the losing streak

Under control JWill off the bench. Much better when he isnt forcing it. Like many of the players, pick your spots
