DON'T GIVE UP, DON'T EVER GIVE UP! Not sure if its been in the pregame introduction video all year long but I distinctly remember hearing it today. By games end those words could not be more appropriate. Full disclosure, I am plagiarizing from google inspirational quotes...this one perfect.......IT'S HARD TO BEAT A PERSON WHO NEVER GIVES UP. Geo this one is for you. Geo seemed to will that last 3 pointer in. Its not the first time he took that winning shot and it will not be his last. Up until the last 3 minutes, Geo had a rough day. Full disclosure I texted my brother that Geo should sit on the bench. Obviously the injury has made him uncomfortable with his shot but unlike the Indiana and Minnesota games where Geo was contributing in positive ways besides scoring, today it was as if when he was in, he was hurting team. He missed his first 4 shots badly and just seemed like he did not have the confidence and calmness about him. THERE ARE USES TO ADVERSITY AND THEY DO NOT REVEAL THEMSELVES UNTIL TESTED. In the last 3 minutes was there any doubt who Coach Pikiell put his trust in to try and get RU out of this mess and salvage a win. Geo drew a foul but missed the one and one and yeah things were not looking good when Nebby converted on the other end to go up 72-66. Then came Geo, knocking down a 3 to cut the gap to 3, RU came up with a big stop defensively and then Geo again driving to the hoop missed but big rebound by Myles who kicked to an open Yeboah for the tying 3. After another stop, Geo had the ball and a clear out was illfated, a critical turnover at the wrong time by Geo and didnt get bailed out by a foul call. And when the RAC came alive to assist RU on that last stop there was no doubt who would have the ball again..it was Geo..missing his first 3 but Yeboah with the rebound and then we got the patented Geo step back 3 that seemed to spin and take forever to go through the hoop with about a second left and RU up 75-72. ANY MAN CAN WIN WHEN THINGS GO HIS WAY. IT'S THE MAN WHO OVERCOMES ADVERSITY THAT IS THE TRUE CHAMPION. Can only love this kid. Injuries suck and he is working through this win. Whether it was the dunk last week or lifting Jacob Young's head up at Iowa, or the winning shot today, Geo is the heart and the soul and the leader of this incredibly hard working and most unlikliest third place team in the Big 10 standings

Sometimes you get more out of a game like this then you do in a 20 point win. Let us be honest. Today RU played much of the game uninspired and not with the usual focus. RU easily could have been up 20 points if they just stuck their mind to it on offense. Losing a 14 point lead and down 6 to the 13th place team is a 31-11 run....no one can hide that one and saying RU played good today. They did not. They played subpar. Nebraska really seemed to want it more and I felt that Hoiberg outcoached Pikiell today albeit that Pikiell won halftime adjustments. In RU's two losses this year on the road it came down to the last 2 minutes, Illinois and Iowa made plays, RU did not today. Today RU made the plays and that is all that matters so no Nebby did not deserve to win it. Rutgers did. I do think the #24 ranking and all the press attention has had an effect on play this week. Defense wasnt as sharp at Iowa and I do think today RU had somewhat of a hangover from that game. I think they sort of took the game for granted in some ways because you could see RU able to get the lead up to double digits at times and you thought okay this one is over. But it seemed like the same bad habits from the first half came back in the 2nd with some bad defense and then just a crappy run on the offensive end where they turned things over more than a pancake machine. It started innocuously enough with a missed Mathis 3 up 60-49, but in a 6 minute span RU was outscored 16-2, made only one fg, misses 5 others, committed 4 turnovers and 3 fouls. Nebraska was dominating on all ends and the disappointing thing is, it did not seem like RU was responding at all. They took blow after blow and not until Yeboah drained a 3 did RU resuscitate their game. I truly believe today is the kind of shock to the system that can wake the team up and refocus and get back to the Rutgers team we have come to know and love all game

So while Geo came up big late, special credit goes to Yeboah because he flat out played like a beast tonight. His threes incredibly timely both in the first half and late. He also came up with that critical rebound off the first Geo miss from 3 and didnt panic by looking for a shot right away and passed it back so RU could take the last shot. Yeboah had a phenomenal line...6-10, 3-6 from 3, 5-6 ft, 7 boards, 20 points. He seemed to just be in the right spot tonight everytime we needed him. Last couple of games really stepping up his offensive production with some inconsistencies from some of the others. He is a special player and integral to RU's success tonight. Would have not won this game without him. I will say Myles was a monster defensively tonight with 5 blocks and dug down deep late. Myles got a block, a steal, a huge board and an assist in the last 3 minutes. When RU was able to get him the ball which wasnt often enough, Myles was successful. Caleb and Montez both had some solid moments today. I think Jacob got shut down in the 2nd half. Young had 12 in the first half and 0 in the 2nd and had some bad turnovers in a key stretch. Seems like again trying to do too much and I think defensively wasnt there today which can be said for a few players. Mulcahy and Carter were non factors but damn what was up with Harper, Ron played a team high 31 minutes but was dreadful on the offensive end just 1-7 for 2 points., From 29 to 2 in just one game. Obviously RU did not attack that zone very well and who knows why they did not but alot of teams are going to see the tape from this game and try to duplicate Nebby's success

Give some credit to Nebraska. Hoiberg is an outstanding coach. Nebby is somewhat like Pikiell's first teams in that they play hard, are opportunistic and do not give up. They do not win much and will likely finish in 13th place but they will fight you to the end. When Fred get his players in, Nebraska is going to be a tough program. I felt he made some big adjustments during timeout to attack RU defensively and to generate turnovers and their transition game really took it too Nebraska. I mean anytime a team outscored another 31-11 on their home court, they are playing some impressive basketball. In the end though its RU who made the plays.

Also the RAC was somewhat neutered by Nebby in the first half so more credit to them. Started to pick up when RU got up 14 but geez it was like a deflated balloon during that stretch coming up to 7 minutes. But we all hung tough and the RAC came alive on those last couple of key defensive stops and we all were rewarded when Geo hit the game winner and we went nuts. Going to need to keep bringing that energy for Purdue and hopefully a little bit more oomph to start the games when RU is defending to try and not let the Boilermakers get comfortable

15-5...6-3 in the Big 10. The difference between winning and losing this game was ginormous. I predicted an 8 point win as I just thought we would have some trouble today and we did. In the end, the standings and NET rankings are not going to care that RU got outplayed today, they will look at one thing. It was a win. Take it and move on to the next game. The players, the coaching staff and fans know we averted disaster today but I think ALL OF US will be better for it. Take nothing for granted and keep focused on the true goals.

You mentioned that teams may try and replicate what Nebraska did. What does Rutgers have to do to play better against the zone going forward?

This may be the longest post I've ever seen. I know it's the longest without paragraphs. Holy mackerel.

You mentioned that teams may try and replicate what Nebraska did. What does Rutgers have to do to play better against the zone going forward?
Put Caleb or Mulcahy at the top of the key to look for someone open or take a jumper. Long ball handlers that can dish is one way to beat a zone. Another way is to rebound, rebound and push it on the other end.

i didn't think we were that bad against the zone. Caleb and Montez, before foul trouble, made some nice shots and seem to both be getting back their shooting strokes. A worry is Harper, who except for the Iowa game, seems to be in a major shooting funk for the month, as much as RU fans don't want to admit it. He is not a zone breaker from outside.

Nebraska made 11 threes, almost half their points. I might be more worried about our perimeter D.

Good teams win when they don't play well. We R a good team.

Two home games in a row, Gio made clutch shots.

Young has moments where we just have to ride him and we will have to tolerate an occasional forced play.

RAC is worth its weight in gold.

Yeboah has the quietest excellent games.

The Miles foul shot might have been the loudest foul shot made in the history of the RAC! ;-)

RAC parking total disaster. They can't park buses? RAC has only been here for 45 years. Come on people.

We dodged a bullet with a Cheerleader almost taking out Montez.

Blood pressure monitor sales on the rise in NJ.

Geo WAS fouled on that drive. Rewatched the game when I got home from the RAC.

Nebraska player grabbed Geo’s left nut and thigh. Obvious foul not called.

Didn’t realize that until Geo’s winner neither team scored from the 2 minute mark down.

Onions from Geo. Yeboah came up big today. Ron really struggled on both ends of the court. Need him back big time Tuesday night.

We dodged a bullet with a Cheerleader almost taking out Montez.

I saw that like it was happening in slow motion. Tez was standing near the bench and a male cheerleader was tumbling non stop and rammed right into Tez knocking him down flat.

Enjoyed the halftime show.

Lots of cross-court, skip passes picked off by them. They looked quicker than us today. We couldn't even make an entry pass. I'll give Nebby some credit.

Harper played like he had the flu.

We won with subpar performances from our two leading scorers. Go RU.

Thing is, the way Iowa and Nebby played zone, they were taking away the area near the foul line. This is why we haven’t been successful against their zones.

I was surprised Hoiberg didn’t play much zone in the 2nd half. It almost seemed like he only played zone when Jacob Young was in the game. Probably saw that JY struggled against Iowa’s zone.

Did you all notice, down 72-66, our last 3 shots were all 3 pointers? Certainly not this team's forte, but came through in the clutch (Yeboah and Geo).

What hurt us is that Nebraska was able to play small, get more shooters in, and still able to play zone effectively against us. It's something to worry about moving forward.

RU took a lot of coaches by surprise. Now that we are getting more conference games played, opposing coaches...all of whom are good are studying what to throw against RU. I fully agree that Pikiell is going to have his hands full countering. We better learn to handle the zone alot better. Also defensively we are allowing speedy guards to penetrate and kick out two games in a row...have to work on that.

Hoiberg the NEB coach had nothing but great things to say about Pike, Miles & GEO.:ThumbsUp

Between Green and Thor(whatever) they had 9 ...3pointers...thats 27pts! And some of their shots seemed absolutely effortless. :boom:we faced a pretty decent Nebbie team.:boom:

:WooHoo:I am happy for the win :WooHoo:

Nebbys zone was packed in tight to take away the dribble penetration and Myles inside game. They dared RU to beat them from deep and it paid off when RU went cold in the 2nd half. Honestly, even though Yeboah ended with 20, he probably could have gone for a lot more. He had a ton of open looks that he opted to pump fake and try to drive baseline. I’d like to see him start taking more of those.

Usually the rematch games are favoring the team that lost. Nebraska has gotten better since November when they looked lost.

The zone is not a factor against RU, it just requires Baker to become more aggressive and to drive and kick...Young and Caleb can do so, not getting into the paint, but pressing with a dribble to force the defense to move.

In regards to where RU is, please keep this in mind.....this run is happening, into the full headwind of what appears to be the most competitive B1G top to bottom in a long time.

I know Nebraska and Northwestern are down and under .500....but we are 6-3 & 15 -5 into the most challenging schedule and situations we can imagine.

We are starting 4 sophs, have an injured Baker coming back from a layoff....and learning on the fly, on how to function under pressure on the road and at home.

These are huge milestones being reached in a short timeline.

We were a little careless with ball and telegraphed a lot of passes. Neb was great at spacing and our guards couldn’t stay with theirs. We still should have won going away but the Paul, Geo, and Shaq line up almost gave it away. It was a head scratcher.

Other teams aren't letting that easy pass in to the foul line of a zone anymore and are extending out to make that happen. Might need someone to knock down corner 3's to make them pay. We were so good with mulcahy at the high post early in the season but teams are making adjustments. Could swing it to the corner and have mulcahy flash from the opposite wing to the elbow

At the same time, you can't ask teams to change the character of who they are mid-season.

Surprised it took so long for the other teams to figure this out.

Knock down shots is the best way to beat the zone, but obviously not what we are best at. Need to move the ball much quicker if we want to get better shots than we are getting.

Win or lose at Iowa Wednesday I feared a letdown today. Short turnaround, kids relaxed more at home in dormitory surroundings, and motivated opponent a few of the factors.

Pike noted in the presser that the team got in late from Iowa and had only one day to prepare. Gut check time.

Proud of this team and staff!! Another notch in the belt today!!

I’d like to see him start taking more of those.

agree that Yeboah had tons of looks from 3. He needs the green light to shoot any open 3. Make them PAY!

That's what makes this team even more remarkable. This amount of improvement over even last year, while starting 4 Sophs against the depth of this league, is mind boggling

Yeboah has the flattest shot for a good 3-point shooter that I’ve ever seen. But, thankfully, they keep going in! He’s been a difference maker in conference play.

We're not talking about changing character we're talking about strategy

The only way changing strategies work flawlessly is if the schemes are a part of the normal game plan. Most teams in the B1G can't make the change so quickly because it's a departure from normal strategies. So yes it is a change in character.

Bac - great comparison in your comment how Nebraska reminds you of Pike’s first team several years ago

Spot on!

Great recap!

I had no idea of Montez being steamrolled by the cheerleader. Omg. Saw Montez after the game and shook his hand. He’s fine thank goodness.

Great analysis! More enjoyable than the professional sports writers.

I was anxious about this game. I felt that this was a game that a pretender would get exposed. We showed we aren’t pretenders.

My compliments to Hoiberg--this Nebraska team was much improved over the team we played in Lincoln. Tough defense , relentless, and some unbelievable outside shooting. Mack is a player and the Icelandic player had ice in his veins and was lights out from deep outside. Couple key players for Rutgers that could easily be overlookedin this win--Mathis was key in the first half by making some key outside shots and causing Mack to incur his second foul which sat him for much of the first half. Montez has a really nice looking form on his outside shot. I don't know why he isn't more consistent . And Caleb McConnell. I really like his game , even if he's not scoring. He plays tough defense , good handle , hustles, rebounds really well and just seems solid on his fundamentals. Really great find by Pike. And Carter deserves some praise. He has his limitations but when he's in there he contributes in small ways and gives Myles some time on the bench to catch his breath and limit fouls. Finally Paul has been a fine contributor but yesterday was not one of his better games. Too often it seemed the offense stalled when he was out there. And he had his problems on defense.
