You know how you know how you are witnessing a program being built right before your very eyes....This might be the third or fourth time that I am leading off the game recap by saying this win was the biggest of the Pikiell era at Rutgers. In reality, every Big 10 win has had significance this year as it led to taking another step or leap up the ladder. Beating Ohio State at home said Rutgers was going to compete in this league this year, Beating Indiana said not only will RU compete but we now belong in this league as a basketball program. Winning at Penn State meant RU we were finally taking all the good we show at home and translating it to the road. Winning at Northwestern meant RU had finally figured out that it didn't matter if it was a home or road game, they were going to bring the same level of play on the road and shake off the decade label of road kill. Beating Minnesota said revenge is sweet but it doesn't matter because you are better than your opponent. Winning at Iowa said Rutgers is better than their opponent on the road, an opponent going to the NCAA tourney.

A tremendous win tonight. A program changer for perception and expectations. Yes it has not happened over night. This team has worked hard all season, overcome some major adversity in January and then has consistently shown resiliency through some tough losses. The last two losses Iowa and Michigan State both were crushing for what might have but were two losses that a young program has to go through. That Iowa last second shot really did teach them. Today was no accident. This team knew they could win. This team was focused. This team was confident. This team had swagger. We have been waiting for this game. A game in which most of the team was on both offensively and defensively and RU would just dominate their opponent. Make no mistakes about it Rutgers manhandled Iowa in every facet of the game (well not foul shooting). This was a game you would expect to see from a NCAA contender fighting for a NCAA bid. And Iowa is going to the NCAA. Rutgers is not. This was a preview of next season. No doubt the kind of game where it makes a believer out of many including me and can erase the demons that have surrounded this program. Still so much work to do...finishing strong the rest of the year and doing well in the Big 10 and maybe even reaching the NIT. I truly believe today is a milestone win that dissipates the black cloud that has surround this dormant program. This is not "Same ole Rutgers"...its now "Why not Rutgers"

Yet another great start on the road today, RU set the tone with its overriding them which is defense. Holding Iowa to just 30 points and really wreaking havoc causing Iowa turnovers and mishandles. Once again RU's length was such a strength in getting their hands on the ball and clogging up the paint. Bohannon and the rest of the perimeter players were never truly able to get into any rhythm in this game. Offensively Ron Harper was just sick nailing 3s and running the floor in transition and just out of nowhere came Issa Thiam hitting three big treys.....scoring RU's last 9 points in the half at a time when Iowa cut the defecit to 5 and it was critical that RU gain momentum heading into halftime on the road.

It was a quiet half by Eugene who only took one shot with no points being hobbled by foul trouble and injury and Geo who was scoreless and 0-5. I noted that both would have to make some contributions. Eugene's contributions may not seem all that big but his two assists to Doorson inside really signaled that RU wanted this game. Those first few minutes can really change the direction of the game. I love that Pike went inside there and try to reestablish the paint rather than get the points from the perimeter. After a couple of Mathis buckets in the open court, all of sudden RU had breathing space at 49-34. There were some similarities to that Michigan State game where RU throttled Sparty defensively and were playing one of another level offensively. Remember RU took an 11 point lead at one point in the 2nd half and in this game I really felt that lessons learned was going to come into play that when challenged by the home team, the response this time was going to be different...and boy it was. RU's offense got a little stagnant and foul trouble was mounting, it was obvious that Iowa was going to try and draw as many fouls on RU as possible and the refs were all too willing to oblige.

So for me in this game...key juncture...Iowa hits 7 free throws and the 15 point lead cut to 9, RU fouling every possession, Eugene hobbling, Carter ready to foul out. Geo Baker arrives.....an aggressive drive and finish to the hoop ending the 3 minute drought without a basket and then he follows it up with a monster 3 to put RU and then another one a couple minutes later that put RU up 19 with 8:52 and effectively pushing the lead up to a point where it was just a matter of RU being able to hold sway and finish off the game. So lesson learned from MSU game, team didnt panic, team didnt turn it over, team stopped making the silly fouls that put Iowa back in the game. From there on Harper and Mathis used their athleticism to seal the deal after Iowa cut it to 12. As fans we all had that familiar bad feeling about a meltdown coming. But this team is different. Mathis and Harper made sure of it and Caleb McConnell drained his free throws down the strech.

What is amazing is if you go back to the Purdue/Minny games which was arguably the worst two game stretch RU had this season you see a lot of youth not ready to play and crumbling without an injured Eugene. But from there to today you saw a bunch of freshmen grow up before our eyes, to a team that was overwhelmed to a team that without relying on Eugene kept making play after play after play. Iowa was a defeated team tonight. There was no real run, no real rally. Rutgers beat them up, physically, mentally, and most importantly on the scoreboard. No doubt in my mind Rutgers is better than Iowa at this point in the season. Just as Penn State and Illiniois and Indiana, all 4 schools are better than their records, all 4 are playing better than Ohio State, Iowa and Minnesota all teams heading to the NCAA tournament.

Individually Harper who broke out in the first game vs Iowa, really had himself a game tonight....9-13 shooting, 27 points, 4-7 from 3, 5-5 ft, 5 boards. That is player of the week stats....and he is only a freshmen. Harper has had a couple of games where he struggled a bit recently. This game was about continuing to work hard and being able to show what talent he really has. Its going to be fun watching him and Mathis running the show in the open floor the next 3 years.

Issa Thiam who had a huge game vs Iowa last year rose from the missing. What a huge part of this victory tonight and the biggest mystery novel this year on the team.. a much needed missing part. I do not know where he has been or the answer but today he delivered everything we needed from him. 4-9 shooting, 4-6 from 3 in just 10 minutes for 13 minutes...wow. Lets just enjoy this performance from him and welcome back Issa.

Montez and Caleb solid games. Montez again a defensive force and his athleticism a difference maker in the 2nd half. Caleb coming on late scoring 8 of his 11 in the last 6:30. Myles quiet offensively but stepped up with 6 boards, solid D and minutes when RU needed him to provide minutes for Eugene and Carter. Truly the kind of team win where everyone contributes.

Where this team is headed. Well like I said tonight is a program changer. There are games to be played this year. One game at a time but goals once thought out of reach could be within grasp such as 500 and the NIT...but again one game at a time. Thats exactly the approach that Pike and company have been sticking to all year long. As fans let us enjoy where we are at right now and feel good about what is to come. Do not put expectations on this team, let those opportunities come to them as they have all season long. Pike has a plan. In Pike we trust.

Great post.

One add, re: Myles is how well he handled foul-line position v zone.

Quality summary, as always. @Richard Schnyderite should pay you for your services! :)

After the Miami game and the close games with MSU and Wisconsin earlier this year, people were speaking as if it were an inevitability that Pike would get it done here. I said, slow down, remember that Waters and even Rice had several of these wins and it takes more. The next step is to show up most nights and actually win conference games, including on the road, including against good teams. The last few weeks, we have seen RU begin to lift its foot for that potential next step. It is underway. Will we land it?

Well f****ng said Bac

Great recap as always. Love the way you always have your finger on the pulse of the program in a big picture way. A few notes on the game:

1. I can’t remember a game where we dominated from start to finish against a quality opponent like this.

2. Harper put Iowa on the ropes with his threes and drives in the first half. Thiam put them down on the canvas with that flurry of threes at the end of the first half.

3. We were up 39-30 at the half with Geo and Gene scoring 1 point combined.

4. Key to the game was that run we went on right out of the gate in the 2nd half. Iowa wanted to come out and cut that lead under 5. Instead, we pushed it to 15.

5. Our defense was downright SUFFOCATING. Iowa’s guards could not get a clean look because of our tight man defense and length. Just like in Piscataway, our guys were getting deflections and steals all night, creating runouts that got us easy points. Special shoutout to Mathis for the defense he played on Bohannan, barely giving him an inch all night.

6. Geo didn’t have his best shooting night, but he had 9 assists and was really distributing. And that step back three in the 2nd half was an absolute DAGGER, pushing the lead to 19 I think.

7. Caleb McConnell has a sneaky good game. He hit a big three in the first half, hit free throws down the stretch, had 11 points, and got some more deflections on defense.

8. Man, how happy are you for Thiam? Kid has had a rough year with the illness and loss of confidence, falling almost out of the rotation, but damn those threes were backbreakers for Iowa. This is what our team was missing for most of the year, instant offense off the bench from a spot up shooter.

9. Pike talks about “sharing the game.” Well, tonight we had 21 assists on 30 FGs, which is probably our best assist rate all year.

10. If you would have told me before the game that Geo and Gene would combine for just 11 points, but we would shoot 50% overall, and hit 11 of 24 on 3-pt FGs, and score 86 points on the road against a top 25 team despite shooting 15-26 from the FT line, I would have been calling 9-1-1 to have you committed.

11. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Ron Harper. He just took over the game in scoring 27 points on 9-13 shooting, including 4-7 on threes, but also driving the lane with abandon yet under control. We are seeing glimpses of a real go-to scorer and all-conference player in future years.

12. As I said in kyk’s game summary thread, the word I describe for this game is just ONIONS. We went into what is usually a hostile environment, stared down a top 25 team, and just stole their lunch money with ferocious defense, deadeye shooting, and just an IRON WILL. We just told Iowa, Don’t F with us. And we did it in their place on senior night.

13. The RAC is going to be ROCKING on Wednesday night. If we win that game, I think that clinches the first round bye in the Big Ten tournament. For now, let’s just savor this incredible win and watershed moment in Pike’s Buildout.

We are learning how to take competitive juices and make them translate to success on the court

It wound be beyond huge to finish this regular season off with two wins and a four game winning streak heading to Chicago

Excellent recap. And the thing that continues to stand out to me most is that our young players , especially the freshmen, play with a level of confidence, toughness and swagger that's long been missing from past teams. After the game ended I got to wondering how good would this team be if Corey Sanders had stayed. And as good as Corey was I truly believe we're a better team without him. The offense would be too focused and centered around Corey and the young freshmen would not have had the opportunity and minutes to develop like they have. Unlike past teams, the scoring is much more diverse with contributions seemingly from a different player every game. I think we have a decent shot at an NIT invite but NCAA expectations have moved up a year. This time next year could be a far different story.

Just sort of summarizing the above: there are a lot of different ways we can win.

Is this the same team that lost to Fordham? All I can say is WOW.
Let's take care of business, Wednesday.

I'm trying to grasp how much of the improvement is simply game experience for the freshmen versus excellent coaching (game day and preparation-wise). I couldn't stop thinking tonight that Pikiell is a really excellent coach in all facets.

Defense was great.

We can beat anyone when we shoot like that.
The defense was outstanding. We kept a really good offensive team from getting into any flow or rhythm on offense all night. And we did it on their court.

You know we played well when a recap has 10 other points to discuss before mentioning Ron Harper's game! Very good game on both ends of the floor. Others have captured it well so there is no need to say more. I expect Penn State to bring it on Wednesday. We need to be ready.

NJH and I have argued (he does a better job) that we are at our best when we don’t rely on Baker and Eugene offensively.

Check the box score, especially 1st half box.

GREAT recap bac.

Unlike Ash, pike doesn't have to say “we have a plan” because we simply see it before our eyes

Next hurdle to leap is transitioning from the hunting to the hunted. I think like starting right now moving forward, teams will no longer be looking through or past us but working and a practicing their Knightmoves !
This is true. Which also means teams won’t come in as loose and confident against us.

This has been a great season. Into March with a lot of energy and optimism.

Personally I can do without calling other teams “bitches,” “soft” (white), “thugs” (black). Just play ball and win games.

Great recap. Harper went from his worst game to his best in days. Thiam was amazing. Mathias defense was outstanding. Gio rebounded and was the play maker. McConell great minutes. We did not have to depend on Eugene. Best wins in years. Future is bright! Beat PSU!

At one point the foul situation had RU at 8 and Iowa at 2. Refs did all they could to keep Iowa in the game. A factor worth noting.

I thought Geo was great tonight in spite of not scoring much. Distributing, defense and even rebounding too. He was all over the place.

He is looking more and more comfortable as a point, and true team leader, as the season progresses.

A lot of media is pointing out that this is our first win on the road over a ranked opponent since Fred Hill's club won at Pitt in 2008. But the truth is, that game was a fluke win where we had an exceptionally good night and Pitt had a bad night.

As Bac has pointed out, that's not what happened last night. What happened last night was RUTGERS WAS THE BETTER TEAM. It's really unbelievable the way this team has come together.

Good write up, as usual. A few things that continue to impress me about this team:
1) The learning curve isn't too much for these kids. For example, big men staying vertical. Our length has been a problem for other teams, but earlier in the season, we'd pick up some fouls by reaching over. Now, they stay vertical and the results have been dramatic, witness the job on Murphy from Minny.
2) Quick hands. Key deflections by Gene, Geo, and Myles led to run-outs against Iowa. Generating turnovers have been a hallmark of this team.
3) Depth. It was interesting to see the full second team on the court yesterday (Myles, Carter, Issa, Kiss, and McConnell) with not much drop in defense or offense for their time (if I remember correctly). Coach has recruited for depth and the results show. Go hard as long as you can and get a blow with little drop in production by the sub. We stay fresh and the other team wears down.
4) Breaking the press. It bothered RU and Coach will need to work on Iowa's in particular, but after a time out, Coach made a great adjustment and they looked upcourt for two layups (Harper and Mathis), which gave us more breathing room.

3. We were up 39-30 at the half with Geo and Gene scoring 1 point combined.

10. If you would have told me before the game that Geo and Gene would combine for just 11 points, but we would shoot 50% overall, and hit 11 of 24 on 3-pt FGs,

This is the most impressive part of the victory. Iowa focused on our lead scorers, and the rest of the team just stepped up to get it done. Total team effort on both sides of the ball.
