Survive and advance...this team just wants the opportunity to have a another opportunity

In a season that went south quickly after some early season bright spots, this was something that can at least make us feel good for 24 hours..but actually its some positivity truly to take into the offseason win or lose tomorrow.

Second year in a row RU beat a team with better talent that sort of tanked during the season. Thats not knocking RU. Pikiell had this team ready to play and energized and focused...it was a 180 from the crappy Illinois performance. Of course not pretty at all, I think that is baked in at this point. Its about clawing and trying to find a way to win even if the offensive options are so limited and there is very little depth. Rebounding was exceptional especially in the first half but a couple of key rebounds late from Mike and Freeman were huge in the end. RU did it with 2nd chance opportunities and just some tough D on Minnesota disrupting the flow of their offense and just getting a hand on any kind of rebound.

those numbers...RU clobbered Minnesota on the boards 48-28 and 33-23 on the offensive end,. Thats your stat of the game right.

RU dug deep in the end, Corey came up big in crunch time as we know he can when he is on. 9-20 and 23 points, 7 boards.. Great to see Mike Williams finally have a solid game with 12 points and 5 boards. Eugene was a force at times at both ends of the court. Freeman...oh yes it gives us pains in our heads to watch him play with his jerky motions and attempts to go up in the trees but 11 boards and 7-8 at the line in the end. Yes he freaks everyone out but did contribute to this win. Its too bad Sa couldnt play because I think he could have helped with minutes. Geo just struggling whether its flu or something else, we need a better result from him tomorrow. Doorson played some great D in the first half.

Great to see Pike bounce back too after a couple rough games where he couldnt get the team motivated or have the answers to put the team in position to win. Winning another Big 10 game is another thing for him to sell.

Again its all about surviving and advance, tourney mode now, do not want to hear about tired legs, these are kids and often playing a game while the other teams comes in cold can be advantage RU cannot get off to a start like they did last year vs Northwestern and get their doors blown off....or get off to a start like the last time against Indiana. Hoosier hammed us at the RAC and they played a great defensive game. Hopefully with Eugene and Mike we can throw new wrinkles at them..they are pretty decent and have improved..thats why they finished 6th but they can beat.

Great turnout tonight, tv commentators on Big 10 raved about the RU presence and I am sure we will have more tomorrow in what figures to be a more juiced atmosphere inside with a strong Indiana presence there and hopefully more RU fans as well.

Issa rebounded really well and played tight D. Williams gave max effort. Corey was special, played good D, and had a few rebounds. Freeman stayed within himself and boarded. Shaq with 4 points and a couple of bounds. Some sloppy ball movement and turnovers.

Do not underestimate Pikiell's starting lineup change. Look at their contributions in tonight's game.

yes good point. Back before Freeman was sat I thought that maybe Pike needed to start moving on from the reliance of Freeman as the 2nd option. Seems like Pike has certainly adjusted and changed Freemans role...and to Freemans credit despite all the criticism, he did respond and filled that role tonight and buying in...and he is capable of having some solid nights on the offensive end if he plays within himself. Helps to have Mike step up too..and Doorson starting over Doucoure, me likely

Excellent comments, all.

Sa DID play, actually - in the 2nd half. Was ... okay. No dramatic moments.

The different starting line-up also led directly to a LOT of Thiam posting up, which while it did not result in a lot of points, did change the offensive flow quite a bit, for the general positive.

Omoruyi is better than Freeman right now - especially as a on-ball, in-post defender, and even on offense - especially with passing and has better post moves. But Freeman can still rebound like all get-go, can't he?

haha didnt even notice Sa was in there..yeah 4 minutes on box...hopefully he can give more time vs Indiana. Sa logged 24 minutes vs Indiana....

also Corey was brutal vs Indiana....1-11 fg...9 points, 6 from the line

Seems like Pike can get his guys up for single elimination games. Just think what it will be like with a bit more talent.

Sa did play some although he wasn't well enough to sustain any minutes. As you stated Eugene and Mike came up big tonight. I think they can come up big tomorrow night. With a decent RU contingent cheering them on, I think we can beat Indiana. And wouldn't that be great?

Just think, if we had beaten Stony/Hartford our record would stand at 16-16, and with a win tomorrow night we could have guaranteed our first winning season in many years. Oh well, at least we all have something to look forward to with this team, plus the new guys coming in and Issa Thiam finally using his 6'10" frame to post up. I hope Issa becomes that inside outside player, which would make him dangerous for us.

Freeman threw one of the best passes of the year that lead to a Doucoure dunk in the first half, and then one of the worse passes, I think trying to hit Sa in the post, but instead I believe he took out at least 2 cheerleaders with that one handed bullet pass.

But getting rebounds, drawing fouls, and making his foul shots was a big contribution last night.

Remember Williams and Eugene did not play vs Indiana. At least Eugene can guard Morgan.

Great team basketball. Got back to grinding it out. We did play our A game. Need to do it again tonight to have a chance.

This game was largely determined by the defense /rebounding of Rutgers versus the woeful Minnesota offense. As long as both teams had no sustained scoring spurts Rutgers was able to maintain a 3-6 point lead for most of the game.Sanders strong first half gave Rutgers the impetus to stay strong for the balance of the game.It was truly a team win with players stepping up with rebounding ,defensive positioning, foul shooting and key baskets at critical times in the second half.

As to the Indiana game they will be rested and are playing at a higher level than Minnesota.Rutgers can't have a slow start where they are behind by double digits after 10 minutes of play. There is no margin for error when the team has so few offensive options. To win Rutgers must dominate the rebounding totals and get some put back baskets after missed shots.Sanders having another 20 point game would greatly help the cause.

Pikiell has Freeman “buying in.” If Only Pikiell properly addressed this early in the year.

I am very happy Rutgers won by wanting the game more. We played our B/C+ game and won.

To beat Indiana we are going to have to play better on both ends.
Gotta disagree with your grade FIG: I don’t think we’re much better than we played, esp. with Geo down. If we consider that: A-. Obviously we are better with a full strength Geo.

That was NOT our A game. We are capable of playing much better. The defensive results were good/great, but some of our better defenders actually didn't have good defensive games. Offensively, other than sanders, who had a good game. And Sanders took 20 shots to get his points.

We won the game with grit and beat a team not ready to play with Mason banged up. If we played our A game we win by 25.

What is VERY encouraging is Freeman. I think if Freeman plays within himself tonight again really good things will happen as a team and individually. Last night was the Freeman that can make this team much better.

Rutgers neeeds Corey to get 20 points for us to even be competitive!

Not going to argue with you after a great win. Have we ever beat a B1G team by 25?

Really nice win last night and hopefully they'll play Indiana very tough tonight. General observations---Amazing how much better the team looks when they're able to hit a few shots . I thought Issa's and Mike's rebounding were big contributions. Mike and Eugene play with such energy that it's contagious on the team . Geo looks a bit slower and not as quick, especially with his first step, as earlier in the year. Whether it's the flu or all the minutes he's played , it's anyone's guess. Doucoure got some minutes today and looked active . Why hasn't he played more as the season progressed , especially with his ability to be active around the basket? Poor defense and lack of rebounding?

As the announcers kept saying...."play great D & rebound like Rutgers is rebounding & you can often overcome weak O"

Thats our formula. Rebounding & D
& hope Corey, Mike, Eugene, DeShawn, GEO......
hope at least ONE of them has a hot shooting streak!

No matter what I am proud of our guys for getting a 2nd game at MSG

Was going to say Minnesota when they were playing multiple walkons, but somehow we didn't win that game by 25+.

You do make a very good point.

Tonight Minnesota did something they haven't done over the past 15 games. They held a team under 1 point per possession. that speaks volumes about something.

Is this the thread where all of the anti-Corey people will finally admit they are wrong? Man, will I miss him next season.

If we can get 50 pts from the group of Omiyouri, Thiam, Williams, Freeman, Baker and Doucure I like RU chances of pulling out win which would mean Corey would only have to score 10pts or so to get into the 60s. Can’t rely on Corey scoring 20 plus pts every night to get a win. He works too hard offensively and defensively to expect same performance on O every night. RU usually brings it defensively. Very telling stat from last night RU is 8-1 when Corey shoots 50% or more from the field. Fine with him only having to take 10 shots and making 5. The problem becomes when RU is so anemic on offense that Corey has to chuck up 20 shots. When he’s on watch out against almost anyone when he’s not RU is a failing one dimensional offense.

Love the feeds down low to Thiam on the block last night. Hopefully that can get him going with some buckets.

Echo the thoughts of Freeman playing mostly within himself and coming off the bench.
Minn had the same offensive flaw as RU long stretches without a score. Indy will be better. Lets see what happens tonight.

GO RU

So you know coach did not properly address? Please clue us in on what Pike did or didn't do here.

Thiam will be taller than everyone he'll see in the post tonight - hopefully he can get that aspect of his game going.

Yeah, that missed pass to Sa was a high and tight fast ball that nearly decapitated some of our lovely women cheerleaders.
