Everyone relax. For starters just like I said after Michigan State there are no moral victories at this point in the rebuild. I think Pikiell has brought this team to the point where they expect to win games and not play close. This team comes out to play and win. No doubt about it. The hunger is there, its just that its just too soon. Yes its frustrating that this game was there for the taking. A couple of shots here and a defensive stop there and things could have turned out different. Certainly I think the last few minutes of the first half and the first 5-7 minutes of the second half was the difference maker tonight. Rutgers blinked and Wisconsin took advantage. Last week I said that RU learned from the Boston U game and was able to close the game out against Miami....tonight showed as the bump in competition from Miami to Wisconsin showed being able to play with the lead and extend it on the road. Rutgers is not quite ready to do it against the #12 team in the country.

Rutgers punched Wisconsin to open the game which was great to see. There was no tired legs to start, no heads down after the MSU loss. RU came out with good energy and followed the gameplan and got contributions in unexpected places. Wisconsin punched RU and RU seemed to show those tired legs and not be as resilient as they have been. But guess what, give Wisconsin credit. That is a good team. Happ is the best player on the floor by far. They are a team that does not lose its composure plus they have more experience than RU. Remember RU beat this team at the RAC last year in a defensive battle...but last year RU had the experience. So while Wisconsin seemed to gain control of the lead, it might have gone up to 11? what I loved tonight was the fight back by RU. Just when you thought RU was dead all of a sudden its only 5 with 100 seconds to go. This game easily with tired legs and nothing going down could have been a 18 point loss but it wasnt

I know some are frustrated but I think its about expectations. RU has closed the gap between themselves and the top 4 in the league. We are disappointed because we lost on the road to a #12 team who will finish top 4 in the league and a possible Sweet 16 type team...consider that. Consider the bright spots tonight we got from Carter....seemingly in no man lands doghouse all of sudden 7 first half points dominating the paint in the first half...where did that come from. He came not even playing until the last minute or two of a game to being a major contribution. Kudos to him for keeping his held high and working hard and kudos to the coaching staff for trusting in him. 18 minutes, 4-5 shooting, 9 points, 4 boards, played some pretty solid defense...a true breakout game for him and that is only going to make this team that much tougher and deeper as we go forward. Carter as a force in the paint can open up some of our offensive stalwarts for some easier shots. Caleb once again got big time minutes and looked solid out there. MSU was not a fluke as he logged 11 important minutes tonight. Mathis got more time and it looks like right now his role is concentrating on the defensive end and deferrring to others for offense. Harper seemed out of the rotation early but did play better later in the game. Again its going to be up and down with these freshmen. We are so young...we are so young...we are so young. People need to understand that when judging the team from game to game or even within the game. Consistency is what they do not have yet. They can hit some shots or make a stop but until they do that for long stretches it puts enormous pressure on Geo and Eugene do try and do it all and both of them are guilty of pressing too much sometimes and that hurt the team tonight.

RU will be okay. They will win some Big 10 games. The freshmen are just scratching the surface right now. Two losses in a row but the trajectory is still positive the past two weeks. Fordham is a dangerous quiz coming up. I have seen better teams than RU fail it. Its imperative that Pikiell continues to get this team to be resilient and keep its head up and focus and go into that ratty gym and win. I know everyone wants to speed the timeline but RU just played two top 15 teams tough. Its not a fluke. Patience is a virtue. Its coming.

This team is just fine

Well stated bac. The build is still ongoing, and we just went toe-to-toe against two of the top few teams in the B1G.

Is it frustrating to watch these young kids go up and down like yo-yos from game to game? Hell yeah. But man is this fun again or what?

Good points all around. Thiam is also worth a mention. I like the kid, but it’s really hard to win against a good team on the road when one of your few upperclassmen starters is an absolute ZERO on offense, Only one shot attempt tonight. He needs to step it up or his minutes will go to a freshman. Thiam has talent, but doesn’t seem to know it. He’s so tentative on offense especially for a junior.

Agree. Issa has steadly improved. I don't expect a major transformation this season or next. He is what he is. I was really hoping Harper gets it going to take more of Issa's minutes. Harper has the higher ceiling without a doubt.

After watching tonight's game, I firmly believe that with a full season under their belts, our freshman along with Geo and Eugene will be able to win these games consistently next season and we will be back in the NCAA tournament after not being there since 1991. I feel that confident based on what I have seen this young team do against MSU and now Wisconsin. This team has the talent, is deep and is still very green.

Now with that said, it still doesn't mean we won't stumble a bit here and there this year. But we also have to win the games we should win, such as the Fordham game coming up. I hope our kids HATE--HATE moral victories like all of us do. Our kids tonight were upset at the end because they knew they could steal this one on the road against the #12 team in the nation. I love where we are going and we FINALLY have the right coach to take us there and keep us there.

Another aspect is I get the sense this team actually learns from their losses.... and they don’t like them! There’s no sense of panic, really, either.

It seems to me that sometimes they forget to crash the offensive glass and sometimes they’re fiendishly good at it. Easily corrected.

Anyway, great analysis, Bac! Love this team and I Like Pike!

Hopefully they learned from the MSU and last nights games, that the need to come ready to play in the second half. There is no room for feeling good about your first half accomplishments.

Last night the scoring distribution was not good. Too many guys with 2 or 0 points. Geo and EO are not good enough to carry this team against the upper echelon in the conference.

Post defense has not been good. Not only against Ward and Happ but on other matchups as well.

Carter played well and McConnell was steady again. The rotation pattern and minutes allocation will be interesting to watch.

The overriding issue regarding Rutgers mens basketball is overcoming the culture of losing which has lasted for decades under different coaching staffs and players. There have been upset wins like Wisconsin last year but at the end of the season the team still has a losing record and are ranked at the bottom of the B1G.

Its the nature of being a fan to hope that meaningful change will occur at the beginning of the season. The Pikiell coaching staff enhances fan optimism which is a positive sign along with media perception that the program is showing improvement on the court.

The first step in actual improvement would be a winning season.Pikiell must make the necessary adjustments at halftime so that the offensive malaise in the second half is minimized giving the team a better chance to win games in the last few minutes. Right now the team has a small margin for error which means Baker and Eugene must score at crunch time and a few other players make big baskets or foul shots .

We need to find a secondary scorer for next season, if we do, I think we're tourney bound. I'd hammer the grad transfer market for that. I also have to imagine that Harper is going to find his shot, he's too good of a player to be shooting this bad.

What's crazy to think about is that this young young young team is play sooo tough against this top notch competition and basically everyone comes back next year with an extra year or experience, an extra year of s&c and an extra year of working on the little things like communtication, defensive rotations, foul shooting, ball handling, shot selection, ball movement, etc. Plug in a grad transfer wing and this is easily a top half of the b1G team next year.

There's going to be a logjam at wing next year anyway, not sure we'd want to plug in a grad transfer. You've got a senior Thiam and a hopefully more experienced Harper Jr. as traditional 3s, You've got Mulcahy and Young creating a scenario where Geo, Mathis, McConnell and Kiss will all be at the 2/3 in multi-guard sets. You've got Eugene potentially playing some 3 in big lineups.

I'd rather use the 2d 2019 schollie on a young player the coaches can develop. A grad transfer could really mess up chemistry too.

Imo were gonna use the 2nd scholly for a 4-year kid. But just as happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR, we will have at least one kid transfer. And its looking like ducuore. I’d like to fill that spot with a grad transfer

A lot of possible and reasonable explanations was to why we couldnt pull last night's game out. A reasonable one is that W had the two best players on the floor. Can Geo get to be one of the conference elites? Can Harper or maybe Johnson get there in a couple of years? Is PM the guy in a couple of years? Thoughts?

Everyone relax? Are people freaking out? The general feeling on the board is pretty freaking optimistic if you ask me. We all love this team

These were two of the best teams in the league. We're gonna do some damage this year.

The pieces are here already.

When Harper and Mathes grow up and develop, you’re going to have two more scores on the floor next year with double digit per game capability to go along with Baker and Eugene. Young could be that play her next year too.

We have the entire team coming back except for Dorsinb... This is about pprogram building ...

Trust Pike to put the full attention to the class of 2020, which could be the one that puts us over the hump for many years to come

There’s all love for this team. Are you kidding? This is exactly the reason we want to be in the Big 10 so we can play the best and beat the best. Nothing is going to ever come easy against anyone in this league.

On last night, a few comments. On Thiam; he really isn’t getting open looks and I don’t want him throwing up bad shots just to get attempts. I like him slashing to the hoop and playing great defense and if he’s open, pop the 3 ball and hit it but no need to take unnecessary bad shots. That brings me to Eugene. He can shoot the open 3 ball if he has it but his game is posting and backing guys down so he can use the glass. I think he’s taking too many poor shots and he’s losing the ball in traffic but trying to handle it up at the top of that key. Leave that job to the guards. Go low post and grab offensive boards for put backs. Shaq Carter looked great. Our bigs couldn’t really handle Happ and that freshman so we need to force more turnovers and not let these guys get position near the hoop. Our defense is good but we were a step slow for the Wisconsin shooters late in the game. You want to win a game like last night, it’s a notch higher in defense to do it.

Overall, I’m thrilled. There can be no let up at Fordham on Saturday. This becomes a fairly important game to win right now. Hopefully our guys catch their breath this week and come out pounding the Rams and then beat the Hall. Next two games are very big for Rutgers.
