They will be a game changer they said. They are headed to a special season they said. They are young they said. They just need some time they said. They played better in Vegas they said. We are Rutgers fan who went through a through 25 years plus of losing. We were sold a bill of goods for this season that was totally inaccurate. We expected Pike to assemble a team of competant back ups to compliment 2 top 5 NBA once in a lifetime talents. 9 games into the season and we as Rutgers fans are not impressed one iota by this team nor the coaching staff. All the fears from the St Johns loss right through mediocre performances at home, the horrid loss to Kennesaw and barely beating a bad Notre Dame team are front and center.

Rutgers is now 5-4. They do not have anything close to a positive on their NCAA resume. With 18 schools and 15 in total legit contending for a NCAA bid, the sense of urgency starts pretty early these days to setting the tone. Look it cannot be stressed enough, its very very very hard to win on the road in the Big 10. Purdue fell flat on their face at Penn State. Illinois could not do it at Northwestern. There is no shame in losing on the road and quite frankly this is the first road league game for this group and they will have trouble adapting albeit OSU's arena is one of the less hostile ones in the league. I do not have a problem with the loss. I do have a problem with how it happened and why it happened and why Rutgers is basically playing the same game every single night.

For starters, nine games into the season, Rutgers absolutely has zero identity. In the past, Pike teams were known for their lunch pail defense and his uncanny knack for threading the needle and getting his teams competing all game long. Can someone answer what this Rutgers team does well? Yeah they have Dylan and Ace and they are incredible individual talents who take and make their own shots but that is it folks. RU does not rebound, they dont play any semblence of help defense, they do not pressure, they do not trap, they do not move the ball well, they do not possess high IQ, they do not have have teamwork, they do not have court vision, they do not have that sense of toughness that their opponents have shown, they do not impose their will on their opponents. Pretty harsh right...too bad. I feel RU all year long same game plan...roll the ball out and just try to outscore the opponents. On some stretches RU will actually get a lead...alas its not sustainable and its a surefire way to end up in the bottom 4 of this league.

We were told they just need some time. Its new players blah blah blah. Well that is great and true if Ace/Dylan were here 2-3 years, we would all be salivating about whats to come in the future. The problem is this team needs to win NOW. There is no tomorrow. No 2025-26 season to look forward. They have to grow from Gerber babies to Jolly Green Giants in just a few months. That is the reality. Yet they are stuck in the infant, immaturity stage, and even worse not being held accountable by the staff. How could Pike and company hold them accountable. 2 guys getting NIL and going top 5 in the draft this spring, you think they are going to be molded by Pike. That carries over elsewhere where a whole bunch of players are simply not talented enough to play in this league. Pike assembled a bunch of low mid major players to compliment 2 NBA players and they have shot blanks.

Cannot win games without making shots. RU is capable...at times...of course they scored only 6 points in an almost 9 minute stretch before halftime with the 2 NBA stars so that is a can of worms to open in another thread about how brutal Pike's coaching has been this year. But equally important is not being able to make stops. Hit shots, stack stops. RU has failed in 5 games vs real teams barely surviving Notre Dame. I praised them for that win because they needed to have success but it looks like they are still so far away from knowing or even being capable of what it takes to win. The defensive effort was simply terrible in the first 10 minutes of the game where the same exact tone from games in Vegas were set. RU literally had major size advantage and were getting shredded in the paint often times the wrong player trying to defend under the basket. There were a few moments in the 2nd half where it appeared the window was open for RU and sigh, a slew of turnovers, wasted offensive possessions, missed rebounds and the usual 2nd chance points by OSU would do them in. RU does nothing to disrupt their opponents ball movement and how is it possible that OSU gets so many easy looks while on the opposite ends, RU has to rely on degree of difficulty shots by Ace and Dylan to role in. That to me is coaching. On the one end, Pike has a group that seemingly refused to commit to playing defense. On the other end, the offense is so disjointed and prone to so many wasted possessions where shots are either forced or the wrong players are taking the shots at the wrong time..see Grant/Lathan 3s.

What is the solution to get RU out of the sticky muck. Should Pike go bac2basics and burn it all down. I would not mind. Very obvious that proceeding at this rate is going to lead to a sub 500 season with some exciting play at times with the end result likely known by halftime. Pike needs to start by demanding ACCOUNTABILITY from his players. If he cannot do that this will be a LOST season. There is still time. RU is just 0-1 in league and Penn State up at home next is another opportunity for a quality win. Bac2therac I wouldnt expect anything less than this team coming out with a bit of chip on their shoulder but its a MUST WIN at this point. Rutgers has lost 4 of its last 5 games...losing a 5th to even out at 5-5 is an ENORMOUS hole to dig out of. Its going to happen one game at a time if it happens but if they cannot rebound and beat Penn State at home and the Lions will be ripe for their picking after coming down off the high of the Purdue win and a likely ranking. Its going to have to be a productive rest of the month for RU...to me Penn State, SHU, Princeton and Columbia are all MUST WINS make no doubt about it. Can they win them all though is up for doubt. The level of competition probably does not make a difference. This team needs a completely different mindset if its going to win games.

These recaps are getting shorter and shorter and less specifics. The box scores and stats do not matter because its not one play or one miss or one rebound that are the turning points. Its EVERYTHING....its starting and ending on the practice court and in the lockerroom and with the coaching staff and with their actions in the portal last season. Maybe we will be wrong. The light will go on and we will all be made to look like fools. Maybe just maybe the talent here is simply not good enough to be a NCAA bubble team. I am tired of maybes. I need to see some changes, some discipline and some fire back into the program. Right now I see a program stuck in its own way with a one year contract with the devil that may have major ramifications for the future of the program in the short term next couple of seasons.

Pre-season hype feeds high expectations. Reality of mediocre performance leads to dissatisfaction and the rise of negativity. First time ever I changed the channel, with 3 minutes to go. Maybe next game we turn it around?

I was hoping for “ There’s got to be a Morning After” 😂

Onto basketball :

Red flags were evident in first 4 games!

Vegas got me optimistic!

Today was a shitshow as Columbus continues to be a House of Horrors!

Team must win next 4 games ! It’s a must !

At this time I’ve accepted what we are : seriously flawed team with many warts !

You can’t win with playing atrocious defense and unwillingness or inability to rebound !

Bench is awful as Martini / Hayes / JMike and Acuff contribute very little - if anything !

Team must go 4-0 in next 4 games !

Pike cannot afford a 3rd year in a row of the team under performing especially with a new AD coming on board ! If so the pitchforks will start to sharpen !

I’m going to remain optimistic as I still have confidence that Pike and squad will figure it out !

High highs low lows. That’s this team.

There will be some monster victories at home followed up by terrible road losses

This team needs a home game badly

This is it in a nutshell. The remainder of the season depends upon Pike and his staff committing the team to defense and rebounding because we are not able to rely on offense.

Time of death for the tourney: 12/7/24.

Prediction: Solid chance you won't even bother doing the recaps after game 20. Or you will just copy/paste past game recaps.

The poor defense and low IQ play on offense has been consistent. There are enough data points that would require anyone to be delusional to think that we have a chance at making the tourney.

Bac, one of your best spot on posts. I am afraid Pike is out of his depth in this new era of the Portal/NIL where you must constantly construct a group of players who can score and play defense and then quickly mold them into a winning team. I believe this requires a keen eye for talent, good mastery of Xs andOs and a strong if not charismatic person who can get paid semi-pro players to bust a gut when they get on the court. Not sure Pike is up to the task at hand. Compared to other Power Level D1 successful coaches Pike seems more like a good Mid-Majors Coach. This team is poorly constructed. It will likely be competitive in most games but will probably only win half of them. Pike deserves Kudos for making RU a legitimate B10 program. But be one of the best in the B10, RU decision makers will eventually need to come to the realization that someone else will need to be hired to take us to that promised land.

Maybe this is a simplistic take, but I just can't get over that we can't get Hayes any minutes to get wide open looks from 3 after they all collapse on Harper.

I understand he's not good defensively but who actually is on this team? What am I missing?

Can't remember a more frustrating team than this.

Don't follow hoops as close as football, but I had a sneaking suspicion this group would not perform as a team.

Carino's writeup is very good, with a funny typo--the points were painful:

"On the points-in-the-pain disparity: "

What really concerns me is that Coach Pikiell in the pregame radio interview stated that practice was focused on defense the past week.Watching the game I sometimes wondered if the players were unsure if they were supposed to play man or zone defense. The number of uncontested layups and put back shots was totally unacceptable.

As to the offense Ohio State made a statement early in the game by double teaming Harper on every possession.Rutgers was in big trouble because Bailey had two early fouls.Throughout the game Williams was a no show and the rest of players getting playing time were mostly left open and shot bricks.Scoring 66 points is window dressing after struggling to even score 60 pointsfor most of the second half..There really was a absence of a offensive flow with most of the shots taken were playground one on one shots by Bailey and Harper.Bailey is a amazing shooter off the dribble but is having trouble getting to the basket on dribble drives.Harper was frustrated the entire game by double teams which caused turnovers and poor shot selection.Bottom line having two elite freshmen players clearly isn't enough to win games against power conference opponents.

Right now I see a program stuck in its own way with a one year contract with the devil that may have major ramifications for the future of the program in the short term next couple of seasons.

Soft team without any heart. Amazing talent isn't enough in D1 power conferences.

NJHawk and I are in huge agreement here.....this game was lost in November when Dylan Grant was sitting on the bench.

Who is going to guard the 6'7'' versatile wing we will see most night in the B1G. Dercack too small. Martini too slow. Wish it could be Ace, but it isn't going to be.

Additional thoughts......
I have been killing Somerville and the staff for his constantly putting the ball on the floor. 3X in the 1st half he didn't. Happy to see!

JaMike.....I am so done with his decision making on offense and worse his defense.

Ace.....I know you can make tough shots, fadeway 18 footers are not efficient shots. Needs to stop....i know they are going in

Dercack......Ace and Dylan are going to be in the NBA, you aren't. Stop shooting early in the shot clock and driving it to the basket

Harper....I can't believe he is the best defensive player on our team

Team overall is not talented enough. If Ace/Dylan don’t combine to score 40-50, the Team most nights won’t win.

you are assuming Dylan Grant is some savior because he is an option on a team needing a whole new cast before 2025 begins...there is a reason he was on the bench and he really hasnt shown me anything much in his time

He isnt a savior. He probably is best equipped to stop a 6’7’’ versatile B1G 3/4

I think they have the heart with Dylan, the problem is the team absolutely lacks any soul and is pretty soft
Dylan seems legit. He's obviously green and needs experience, but he's likely the real deal.

why is Pike greenlighting Lathan, EO, and Grant to take 3s

do you think there is much accountability by Pike on this years team...would you even describe this as Pikes team

He can shoot and miss threes with reliability. Wasn’t he supposed to be a rebounding specialist?

You can blame Zack for not sliding his feet or putting up defensive resistance but when they do it 5 times in a row , that is on Pike. Every sub backfired , and his failure to even try zone a few times or a1/3/1 trap half court defense was puzzling. Allowing Ohio State to pummel you in the paint 44-14 is disgusting. The blueprint for squashing Ohio State was given to him by Maryland. Now we do not have the individual defenders Maryland has , but we have the length. Not pressuring the ball and forcing them to get into their offense , which would have prevented some of their scoring was a strsgetic decision that Pike failed at miserably. Ohio state got their easiest buckets they will get all year. Really hard to excuse. One of Pike ‘s worst game day coaching days but even worse not getting his players energized to even play pressure defense , rebound , even attempt to rebound , get a loose ball so they didn’t get a second chance. Just abysmal in a game that was not that difficult to win.

I like recaps and this one isn't necessarily a recap. More of a complaint session....which is fine.

We have 2021, 2022, 2023 recruiting classes that we are attempting to essentially erase all in 1 class of 2024 of HS kids and portal transfers....

Jalen Miller is 2021 (long gone, but not a factor in the equation)

Derek Simpson 2022 (probably missed by this roster more than some fans and the OP understands).

Ant Woolfork 2022.....still a better option than Ogbole (in theory......Better than Martini 100%....

J Mike Davis 2023.....OK frosh season. But sub 30% from 3 and sub 50% FT shooter......

Gavin Griffiths 2023.....better than Martini, not better than PJ Hayes, but another negative defender, not a rebounder or playmaker.....

J Will.....portal recruiting kid, but not on the HS recruiting pattern of recruit and develop. Playing solid, but needs to have the ball to be more effective.

So all of the complaints in the post is kinda dumb, silly or somewhat illogical.....most smart fans understand that meshing a roster takes time and now fans are panicked because we aren't rolling towards a #4 or 5 seed. I get it.

Let's however, not go overboard on the staff.....they did what most staffs did.....pick portal kids and trying to mix them with others.

My primary issue is not actually the recruiting.....I think the recruiting has been fine.....what has not happened is a commitment to logic. And usually having fewer options means fewer decisions by the staff.

I watch hoops and football like everyone here. What we saw today was more coaching or something that is indifferent to contact. Which is something I've never uttered. RU doesn't foul anyone.....no one pays for drives, no one hits the floor from the opposition.

If RU wants to play more offense focus on that, it is part of the development that the program HAS to go through.....but that doesn't mean everyone on the floor has to play offense or avoid contact.

A) Still waiting for Zach Martini to actually foul someone.....I watched a lesser talented big from Northwestern, bump and club people driving into the paint.

I have not seen anything that indicates that Martini wants to play through contact, initiate contact or play with force. He is a bright kid, local product but we listened to one particular parrot of Ivy League basket, literally pump his chest out about how smart, tough and savvy Martini would be. Does that show up on tape?? Does he impact any aspect of the game?? How he sees any minutes on a B1G roster is criminal right now.

B) Ogbole....another player who actually is BETTER than Martini, better than Cliff as a 2nd year player.....he is still woefully behind in terms of instincts and play, but he at least tries. But he is supposed to be a 10th man/rotation guy....is he better than Myles Johnson, Candido Sa, Shaq Doorson.....the answer is kinda no and that's another player eating up minutes.

C) JMike.....connected to Ace, which I buy into 100%....plays hard during a very difficult and competitive backcourt of guards last year and carved out a role...but from a hoops perspective, he is still a full B1G season behind a Derek Simpson.....Davis only matched Simpson in some areas last year.....this year the gap between Davis as a sophomore and Simpson as a sophomore is ENORMOUS.....Simpson at St Joe's is miles better than Davis.

D) Acuff.....huge injury this summer has probably cost RU a game or two....but I remain confident he will improve.

E) derkack and Hayes.....probably the best backcourt that should be a 2nd unit tandem, where one drives and one spots up....

The most talented players on this roster are the freshman.....all 5 SHOULD be playing at least 15 to 20 minutes and live with the results.

Dylan
JWill
Grant (in Caleb/Mag role)
Ace Bailey
Sommerville

Derkack
Acuff
Dortch
Ogbole

No minutes for JMike until he decides to play real defense....

No minutes for Hayes until he hacks someone and gets a flagrant foul....

No minutes for Martini until he fouls out and clubs/rakes an opponent across the arms/wrists and pulls a player to the ground.

The definition of insanity is running the same lineups out there, when the players show no interest in contact, no interest in trying to defend or fouling. I would rather see a team march to the FT line and lose, instead of watching put backs or layups.

So much for adding Jay Young as an assistant.....??

Where is the pride or sense of urgency on the sidelines.

I don't know any player who doesn't get the message from a coach, when it's bolted to the bench for a full 40 minutes.

Anything short of Dortch, Grant and Sommerville as 3 of the 4 primary front court players, is pushing the envelope towards a bottom 4 B1G finish. Pike has 48 hours to do something, PSU has shooters and slashers up and down the roster......

i dont know this looks like an indictment of this coaching staff anemic recruiting over the years and then total brainmelt when it came to approaching this seasons team

Harper and Ace are amazing. As good as advertised. But this team doesn't have an identity. They've gotten away from what Pikell has built this program on and that's defense and hustle. And I'd even add rebounding, which often comes from hustling and playing hard. This team doesn't defend well enough and they're getting outhustled night in and night out.

Disappointing to waste an extremely rare opportunity where you have an iconic college duo projected to go top 5 choosing Rutgers and probably won't get into the NCAA tournament. It is still early and they can turn things around with some quality wins in the Big 10 but this team doesn't look like they have the toughness to do so. And that's something I would of never said about any other Pikell team at RU

The recruiting has been discussed and there's no fixes out there for this year. I am very comfy with the 2024 and 2025 classes and where we are working for 2026 kids as well.

My concern in terms of meshing players, is there but we should not start our backup center and backup guard (Derkack) and ask him to guard a PF.

It's almost impossible to put out a more incomplete lineup out there for 40 minutes, when the roster has 2 other frosh who can do nothing worse than the starters.

Maybe this is a simplistic take, but I just can't get over that we can't get Hayes any minutes to get wide open looks from 3 after they all collapse on Harper.

I understand he's not good defensively but who actually is on this team? What am I missing?

Can't remember a more frustrating team than this.
You are missing that he's a guy that was playing D2 two years ago and probably isn't an answer. That said, I wouldn't be mad if he was rolled out w Derkack minutes one night, just to see. I feel I know what the results would be, but it would be nice to know.
