Who among those three would most benefit from being on the floor with this year’s talents, or who would fit in best and help team? I’m interested in view of those three. You may add others.

If everyone was healthy and playing time was handed out on a meritorious basis only I don't think that Gavin or Derek would be playing much and Woolfolk would be our emergency big. So, I am going with none of the above.

As to who would blend in/contribute best if on the floor regularly, I think that it would definitely be Derek, no surprise since he is the best player of the 3.

If I had to take 1, it would be Gavin purely based on ceiling and 3 point shooting

If (big if) Gavin figures it out, he can be a real weapon from deep. The concept of Gavin would have been a perfect fit for this team with Harper and Ace drawing so much attention

Derek is most already duplicated on the roster with guys of similar ability in JWill and JMike.. Wolf could have possibly played a role as a big off the bench, but a further developed Gavin would be the one that would fit best. Becoming half the shooter he was built up to be would be a perfect fit for this team and the future. His three years remaining probably give him the edge.

Except we do not need to look at the concept of Gavin bc we have PJ who shoots it better and does other things like rebound and play defense something’s Gavin. struggled with.
Martini gives you Wolf’s big body but also a stretch 5 that can knock down threes, things that Wolf could not do.
With Dylan and Ace taking the majority of the shots, Derek would not have a role any bigger than Jmike’s and would never be taking 10-15 shots a game.
So it is early but thinkRU although they appreciated those guys , will not be missing them.

Interestingly, thus far they've played similar amount of minutes this year, and have the same # of rebounds, so I wouldn't say one rebounds better than the other. GG also has more assists steals and blocks. Right now, the only thing PJ is doing better is shooting.

Not quite true to question, but if GG came in this year with Lathan, Ace, and Dylan, I think he’d have seen himself as part of a frosh quartet and excelled.

Well yea, but pick one...

None would help. Going on what we've seen to date all of their replacements are superior.

Well let’s be glad that didn’t happen. I’m not buying that he would have played significantly had he been 1 year younger and his freshman year was this year.
If he was entering as top 25 freshmen this year and billed as a shooter we might have relied too much on him and not picked up a PJ. We would have been SOL when we realized we couldn’t count on his shooting amongst his other struggles.

Probably would be a better comparison tomorrow night when PJ will have played 3 games, but this year PJ’s stats are much better than GG. His shooting is a lot better. GG is .429 overall and .273 from 3. Whereas PJ is .600 overall and .429 from 3. Might be that he just has had 2 good games shooting, but PJ’s start at RU has been great.

I compared them because the minutes they've played are similar, one played 50 minutes thus far, the other 48, regardless of how many games it took.
Yes, I said PJ is shooting better.

Their 3 point averages this year are also quite similar to their own career numbers.

Probably, but i havent given up on Gavin and i have seen PJ for 3 games
I’ve seen all I need to…I think both of them need defensive improvement. I give the edge to PJ

Offensively edge to PJ as he seems more aggressive and has better court presence.

Cherry on top: PJ actually has a presence and energy out there that which creates a good culture—helps bring the fanbase Alive.

Gavin does have the edge in athleticism and I think has higher upside. If I had a choice right now I wouldn't hesitate taking PJ

Cliff. 😉

Right now, the only thing PJ is doing better is shooting.
Which for this year's RU team is what matters.

I would say, just from the eye test, Hayes at least has been solid and respectable on defense. Last season Griffiths could not cover anyone, at all... Was a complete seive on defense, really damaging.

One year only? Only Simpson is a possible answer IMO, if he cpuld accept a limited role.

Hayes > Griffiths, Derkack > Griffiths

Martini > Woolfolk, Lathan > Woolfolk, Ogbole a tie at worst w Woolfolk but so much bigger, I'd go with him too.

Simpson would have had to accept a massive cut in minutes and reduction in roll, but could be helpful as guard depth and a good FT% to help close out games when we know we will be fouled.

Except for gg being highly rated as a recruit I haven't seen anything in 1+ season to say his ceiling is anything but a college role player. Woolfolk would fit best I think. Has some nice feet and touch around the rim. We have enough guards this year.

I agree, PJ has been a pleasant surprise on that end, however we did have him glued to the bench down the stretch the other day. Also, meaningless this early, but GG defensive rating is actually lower than PJ's - both lower rating than their actual defensive ability/contribution

What 3 point shooting? He's a 25% 3 pt shooter.

How about the concept of Gavin getting beat off the dribble, off the ball, and to a loose ball.

I do think he would have improved with that and I think he gas a good chance of being a good offensive player.

If Marinelli can do it anyone can.

Gavin, Antwone, or Derek did not have a role on this team that is why they are no longer here. But the only one that would be a viable option when it comes to the rigors of B1G play would be Antwone. He could be used as an option if bigs get into foul trouble. But he left because he wanted to be more of a presence in the rotation. Not just a 4-8 minute kind of guy.

Wish them all nothing but success.
