I'm greatly encouraged, especially by the defense, which is improving rapidly and much faster than it did under schiano.
Great ballgame. Wish we won. Hoping for Ash to keep up momentum and keep his class together.
If we can play competitive next week against a team that's not struggling then I say we are taking the next step.
I agree that the team is playing better. Sort of reminds me of a RU 2005 game- not quite good enough to pull out a win against a team with more talent, but players playing hard enough to make it a game.
The difference here in my opinion was the one turnover, and mediocre at best QB play.

I thought the team today showed the biggest improvement over the last game of any game so far this season, especially the defense, which kept us in the game. The offense blew several opportunities and there were several questionable play calls that possibly prevented us from winning.
The turning point of the game was clearly the fumble call on the incomplete pass. Had that call gone the right way, we might be celebrating a victory right now. It was all too reminiscent of Illinois (2005), WVU (2006), and Louisville (2012).

The team is competitive. Have to credit the coaching staff for that. Next 2cweeks will be a big measuring stick as to how far that progress has been, particularly if Grant and Lambert are out.
Getting better - NO doubt - but don't get your hopes up for the next couple games. Iowa isn't too "athletic" of a team. The rest of our schedule is much-to-much-more so IMHO.

Our QB play was horrendous again today. Same story....different game.
I did say "mediocre at best" but your statement is probably more accurate. Believe me I think it's way past due that we bench Laviano and not just for a series.
