There are a few hotels that are walkable. I stayed at a Hyatt Place near the state house for parents weekend a few years ago. That was nice enough. They sold drinks in lobby and people were kind of tailgating in the hotel as tailgating like we do at RU in large parking lots is not done by many. Unless you stay at the Student Union south which is right next to Camp Randall, all the walks for hotels are around a mile or more. It is not a killer, but not short either, though you can bus it. There is also a Doubletree on campus near the Kohl Center that is a little closer to the stadium and State Street (party central) than the Hyatt. I have stayed at what is now Graduate Madison, it was a nice little hotel, more of a boutique, and it is right off State Street in heart of campus near the old student Union and lake.

I booked Marriott on west side of town. There are a lot of hotels off the highway belt on both east and west sides of town. They are about 10-15 minute easy drive to downtown. You may have to stay out there as this weekend is Halloween in Madison. My daughter that recently graduated from Wisconsin said Halloween is like the biggest party of the year in the city. So many folks will be in town to party, and not necessarily go to the game. But they will eat up hotel rooms. Book soon!

Mr.Screw and I are staying at the Madison Concourse downtown near the capitol. I booked it months ago and it came highly recommended from a friend who sent 2 kids to Wisconson.

They provide shuttle service to and from the game or it's about a mile walk.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Madison on West Jefferson

Accurate overview of the lodging options in Madison. Our group is staying at the South Union. Great for game day, but a long walk to State Street and the post game action. My son's apartment is next to the Double Tree and close to the bars and restaurants on State, Johnson, Gotham and Gilman Streets. Hotels close to State Street are desirable, but expensive. Most people park in satellite lots and use the shuttle buses to and from Camp Randall. Try to visit the Memorial Union at the at the shoreline of Lake Mendota. It has a great outdoor seating area to enjoy food and drinks.

Not sure if you are married to Chicago but on United at least, can fly to Milwaukee for about $20 more (direct) and cut an hour off your drive.

About a mile walk? That's 2 sidewalk naps for Mr Screw isn't it?

I booked the Edgewater hotel (which seemed close enough to walk and also on the water which I wanted), but sadly can't go on the trip anymore.

I am at Hampton Inn and Suites - 440 West Johnson Street in Madison. A mile from the stadium according to TriVago.

August 13: Switched to the Madison Concourse - actually cheaper than the Hampton Inn and Suites.

I am also staying at Madison Concourse also on the recommendations of family friends who have kids now graduated from Wisconsin. Like the way Mrs. Screw thinks.

Thanks for all the info .. Booked the Madison Concourse (checking in Friday and leaving Sunday) Hotel and Flights are booked .. only thing I need to finish the trip is tickets to the game ... Are most people buying direct from RU, StubHub or scalping on game day?

I would make the walk. It's fun to walk down the streets and see everyone dressed in red, students milling about, etc. You might want to leave a bit early and grab a brew before you head to the game.

If you're staying near the Capitol, get up early and hit the Dane County farmers market on Capitol Square. Sample the local cheeses (remember...you are in Wisconsin!), get a cup of coffee and a freshly baked Danish. Actually you should do this even if you're not staying near the Capitol. The farmers market is one of the biggest in the country.

Postgame, hit up any of the bars in town. Be warned that many of the bars on State Street will be filled with students, and make that double since it's Halloween weekend. If you're near the Capitol, visit the Essen Haus where you can drink from a boot. At any time during the weekend, visit the Memorial Union (Union South is near the stadium, Memorial Union is on the other side of campus). Get an ice cream or a beer, sit out on the terrace and enjoy the lake view.

Halloween has become a lot more subdued since the city got tired of people coming in from out of town and trashing the place, so they've really clamped down on the action. It's still Madison, though, so be prepared for a party. Not sure about State Street on Halloween night this year, they usually block off the entire street and charge admission.

We plan to drive around a bit in Wisconsin before heading over to Ann Arbor the next weekend. Any thoughts for Green Bay & Milwaukee?

Green Bay is sleepy. Go there only for a Lambeau tour. Milwaukee is the destination

College football weekends are a blast in Madison so its worth spending Fri/Sat night in town.

Always hit up State Street Brats before/after game or night before. Bartenders there many times offer free shots to visiting fans (i.e. welcome you to town).

Fun times in Madison...fun times.

Also, hit their old classic "German Beer Garden" Student Union on the lake...just awesome. (not the new one)

Also, stop off Clary's Gourmet Popcorn on State Street and grab several bags of different flavors to enjoy during your visit.

SRRU86, yes easy walk straight west from that hotel to the stadium, maybe even a little less than a mile.
The game will probably start at 11:00 AM. Hit the Nitty Gritty for a hearty Wisconsin breakfast. It's open at 8:00 AM on game days. If you order a Bloody Mary it also comes with a nip bottle of Rhinelander. Seems odd to follow up a Bloody Mary with a beer, but then you notice that even the old ladies are drinking them.

State Street Brats is good before the game, but God-Awful packed afterwards. There's an abundance of places to eat and drink after the game.

Most of State Street will be open to pedestrian traffic only on Halloween, but the only places that charge a cover for Freakfest will be the theaters where bands will be playing.

the plan was to drive to Green Bay to watch the Packers game in a Packers bar, take the Lambeau tour on Monday and head to Milwaukee.

any Milwaukee suggestions?.

Sobellman's is a dive bar that serves a sick Bloody Mary(Google it). I haven't been to Milwaukee, but learned from my mistake of staying in GB.

I was tired and my back hurt and all of you were just standing there and talking and talking and talking.... blah blah blah
You were talking and talking and talking, but from your back, so it was really just an elevation difference. You didn't spill a drop, as I recall, and the Nebbies looked at you like you were a cross between a fawn on ice and semi-fresh roadkill. They were masterful in navigating their "conversations" with you.

Glad nobody was bitten or kicked.

You're thinking of someone else. I was mostly asleep at that point.

No, you were definitely back-talking passersby. Was kind of admirable, really, in an "I don't really know him even though we're having dinner together until he left early without telling anyone" kind of way.

Lakefront Brewery, though I actually haven't spent much time in Milwaukee so I got nothin' else. Green Bay is all PACKERSPACKERSPACKERS all the time, it's a ghost town when the Packers are at home -- everyone is either at the stadium or inside watching the game. Wisconsin is playing LSU at Lambeau for next year's opener and I really want to try to get to that game, but from what I'm hearing, tickets are going to be hard to get and prices are going to be off the charts crazy.
