Good win but a question on strategy or decision making...

Getty's was 7-7 and scored the first 7 points of the 2nd half. Sa was making shots in the paint. (Combined 9 for 12) They had the advantage down low yet after those 7 points and like 15mins remaining CJ never touched the ball again while the guards were driving and throwing bricks off the backboard. (Corey/Nigel combined 3 of 22)

I like that we can drive on the zone (cause we sure can't beat it from deep) but this one was too close late and we weren't using our size advantage and what was getting us baskets. Glad to see Nigel and co. make the foul shots. (20-27) cause that was the difference end game.

Agree. A lot of times the entry pass into the post is there, mostly with CJ, but the guards don't give it up.

There's going to be a time when we will need the guards. Let's work through the kinks now when we can win games screwing around.

I agree with this. The guards and wings need to work out the kinks with the outside shooting. We're not going to win a single B1G game if we continue to shoot 20% from 3-point land.

The attack of the zone in the first half was hard to understand. freeman was positioning himself away from baseline allowing the zone to extend away from the basket. in the second half, he stayed low and we got alot done inside. this was a bit of a head scratcher, zone attack 101.

did not like the way RU attacked zone last night and they settled for 3s too much when we know how awful they are from 3..just because there were open 3s doesnt mean they should take them, need to attack the zone better and find the open seems which were there, need to be more patient. Guards trying to do too much and thinking they are better than they are

CJ has the option on almost every pass to the post to take a jump shot , drive or dish. With the exception of one drive which he took to the hole and scored, he passed to wings that were open. I agree with Degaz, we must hit 3's to beat the better teams in the Big 10. Defense , rebounding, second chance points, and hustle will only get us so far, competitive but not a winner.

I thought the offense played with very little purpose last night. And honestly, neither did the defense. The team has been attacking these zones so far this year, and for the most part getting decent looks. Last night it seemed like it was pass the ball along the perimeter and either create a shot late, or score on the offensive glass. This was the first game this year I think RU won almost entirely on the talent-gap between the teams, not unlike what Miami did to us. We've lost to plenty of less-talented teams over the years, so it's not the worst thing in the world. But it is not something we can rely on for much longer. This is now 4 straight games where this team has looked flat for periods of time, something we didn't see very much of earlier. I am interested to see where this team goes from here.

not sure how you can say that when he was 7 for 7 and only one was on offensive put back? I didn't see many at all passes from the elbo last night. I was sitting first row 200 right at the foul line behind RU bench just watching for this. Didn't happen. Other games, yeah. last night, no.

in order for him to make that choice somebody has to give him the ball when he posts. He did it and was wide open time after time but nobody was feeding him the ball. I was going to yell at him to DEMAND the pass which is what he may have to do. It opens up the offense.

7-1 in first few months of new coach?

talking more about the guards decision making...(and Getty's too for that matter) I am thrilled with the results so far but doesn't mean we can't be better. And I was referring to the 2nd half Sat's game not the season.

As i said somewhere before...I'd consider having Corey play as a big vs. zone and being the guy who we get the ball to in the high post. I get that it it is unconventional and he is a smaller target. He needs to be on the floor, but is killing us vs. zone.

AND move the outlet higher. Morgan state's breakouts were much better than ours. Now their shot selection...............

Don't necessarily disagree with you regarding Saturday night. That was Cj's best game , shooting , blocking shots. But he did get the ball at the foul line against the zone and has to take that shot. For the first time , he faked and drove to the basket for a nice drive. Is he going to be able to do that against quicker guys, doubtful, although he did it once against Miami for a lefty layup.

So far it looks like Gettys is our most consistent shooter from 10-12 ft and if he can find some space take 10 shots per game. He can pass to the wing, but if we're not hitting the 3, don't keep throwing it out.
The guards are able to penetrate because of their quickness, but if you don't pass to the open man, it's no advantage. Their shot selection is terrible at times on drives because they go past the point of no return and get trapped without any option, but to shoot. That's what happens when you don't have a pull up jumper that the other team respects.
As for the 3 point question, the best we can hope for is to not be outscored by 12-15 point from there. Anything we get from the perimeter on a good night is a bonus. That's the reality so we have to figure out something else. I think we have players with the ability, they just have to do it when it counts.
Have to get it fixed before the conference games or at least have a plan.
At least we're winning and learning and not vice versa. Could make a difference somewhere down the road.

the one good thing about the way are guard are attacking the rim is they are creating plenty of offensive rebounds for put-backs. Heck some of their shot look more like passes :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It's a whole new skill set and maybe the CS knows what's going on and don't want to tip their hand. I wouldn't say the guards are doing it on purpose and will certainly not help in a tight game. They can make a huge difference with their heads and not hands, but we have to make the shots too.

I'd like to see us run a double low post for a few minutes with Sa & CJ flashing in and out of the paint and Freeman/Issa on the wing.
