GS doesn't want to come back to RU. Should we pull his offer?

Let's assume that Greg Brown reached out to GS by Saturday at the latest. GS by that point interviewed with USC and UCF. He's now also interviewed with Miami and he's also spoken with Virginia allegedly. Clearly we aren't his top choice. We're a safety school for a guy with good amount of money in the bank who doesn't seems willing to come back to settle unfinished business.

If he wanted to be here, he'd already be giving stump speeches all over NJ. Do you want a tepid Schiano coming back here only because he swung and missed with Miami. A Schiano who's main motivation is to not tarnish his initial legacy here?

Pulling his offer because he may have another option is bad business. You have a list, and you work through it. If he is your first choice, and you are his second, yet you still have the opportunity to hire him, you do. The end result is what matters.

Not convinced that anything progressed beyond simply sticking a toe in the water - if that.
While there are attractive aspects -
A very long list of reasons to NOT pursue "Part 2" could be easily drawn up.(by both sides)
... and if you finally have a chance to "open the vault" would you use the chance on a return of a previous coach ?

True...true but coaching is a different animal. You want someone who is 101% invested. Plus it is harder to sell RU to recruits if they know it wasn't YOUR first choice.

agree with njrex, GS is the only guy out there who knows exactly what's need to win here and he will ask for it.

If I had to bet real money I would put it on Golden. Not much competition for him and he's a Jersey guy.

How do we know that Schiano is even on the short list of Greg Brown let alone on the top of his list, you know what they say about assumptions.

There are a ton of things that have to be worked out in a negotiation like this. Even if we had settled on Coach X and agreed in principle, there's still a gazillion things to do before a contract is agreed upon. I wouldn't be surprised if we haven't made a hard offer to anybody yet. Or that we've got a deal in principle and are working out details.

Would love to have GS and Robb Smith as DC or a guy like Rhule with a strong staff. Think GS would rather Miami job over RU. Problem for him is UM would rather Richt over GS which may equate to him coming back to RU.

I'm not all that sure that GS returning will pay dividends. It is not easy to come back to a place and have everything work out.
Schiano has not been on many lists since his departure from TB. It appears that he is getting a lot more attention right now. He knows how to negotiate and this may be part of that right now, maybe not.

All coaches have their shtick. to goose everyone up. Its hard to keep things fresh. Seems like every program now is "a family" and their recruiting area is "the State of______". GS already did all that (he learned it at Miami). I remember Pat Riley talking about how much harder things became over time. There are only so many rabbits you can pull out of the hat. How much "juice" could GS really feel for RU job? Starting somewhere relatively new must seem appealing . Plus GS is an Old Testament coach. He likes to lay down laws in the dessert and build foundations. Greg was a good Moses but I don't know if someone can be Moses twice. A new coach would have a bit of a honeymoon at RU. GS would feel the heat pretty soon.

I get the feeling that Schiano just wants to remain in Florida if possible. USC is the exception.

Good, I hope that Richt takes the Miami offer and that Schiano gets booed mercilessly every time he rolls into Piscataway with his Maryland team.
 
There's a difference between "pulling his offer" and waiting around on ours knees for him.

It is their profession. They are essentially free agents. They are right to explore options, and no one really knows what is going on so you can't say what is a first choice and what isn't.

Maybe GS isn't our first choice. Should you not coach at a school if you aren't their first choice?

Of course note, its silly. These people are professionals and this is a professional decision. I don't care if we were Chip Kelly's 18th choice. If we could get him, I would happily take him.

Let's face it here, there are many head coaching jobs that are better than Rutgers available. Places with better support from the university, more financial support, bigger fan bases, better facilities and better atmospheres. You can't blame Schiano for wanting to coach at a place that gives him the best chance for success.
 
Schiano reportedly turned down UCF because he thought he had a real shot at the Miami based on his interview. It is very possible the same thing happened here and just hasn't been reported.
 
Schiano coming back to rutgers would be a lot like someone leaving the military, crashing in civilian life, and then returning to the military. It's kind of an admission of failure.

Depends on where he is in terms of RU's interest on him. If RU feels he is one of the top from the list, I suppose you take him no matter what. If he is in the middle of the list, make him wait. If he is toward the bottom, pull the offer.

Personally, assuming $3 million salary range, he would be towards the middle on my list, and make him wait. I'd rather bump another $0.5 to $1 million and go all out for Richt. If that doesn't pan out, than I would still make him wait and see if I can get someone towards the bottom of my list but lot cheaper.
 
From what I've been reading online, seems like GS really does not want to come back here. I think he would have done well as 2.0, but oh well.
 
We don't pull the offer we give a deadline like UCF did. Shouldn't be that hard to get a deal done. Surprising thing is that we haven't heard rumors of who has interviewed.

Politi: Al, can you explain how you get a fickle NJ recruit to come to RU to play for you...because you just got fired from your last job.

You get the picture...he will have to prove himself to everyone.
We need someone that is proven! Golden hasn't proven himself yet...and we can't afford to hire someone with promise. To get talent...we NEED proven talent at Head Coach first.

I said early on that GS wasn't coming back here.. Why would he ? He knows the limitations here.
IMO RU will always be looking back at the Schiano years as the Good Old Days. Golden or Christobal will be like Flood or Shea or Graber or Anderson. No stain.
 
I can't blame him for wanting Miami over Rutgers. For him working at a private school with a football pedigree is better than walking into the NJ political machine where the press and residents will be questioning every day he wans to spend.

This. He wants to stay in FL where much of his family resides. He's not coming back to the NE barring somethng unusual. Time to move on.
 
Always heard from very reliable sources that he wanted to stay in Fla but then again, all sources are unreliable.

I would actually take Greg over a number of names I am hearing but there is no in the world I thought he could work for Julie and I have stronger doubts he would work for a guy like Hobbs. Greg does not ask permission from anyone and certainly would not be happy if being told "you can't do that" is a common response.
