Has Flood...

Doug, thank you for your insight. Even in 2004/2005 it was so different then it is now. As Kevin went through it, we really didn't care about anything but what was right for him. I don't think he ever felt like he 'had' to play for his home school. Most of the coaches except for a few were about the same, I never saw a 'super recruiter' whatever the hell that is. He eventually chose Rutgers because on his visits elsewhere, he felt the same as you, an outsider.
Great choice because he is still friends with most if his teammates. They still hang out and he always knew we were close by and also always looked into the stands before each game to see us. He said it was so strange in a couple if away games we didn't make to know we weren't there.
The worse moment was 2007 against Ville away. He got hurt pretty bad right before half. They had considered bringing him to an emergency room down there and it scared shit out of him not to have family there.
Spoke to a buddy of mine who I believe played at the same time as you. His son went to Stanford. Don't get me wrong, you never turn them down but he told me the first thing he had to do was find a family that would go to the hospital with his son if he ever got seriously injured while he would have to scramble to get a flight out there.
There are so many reasons to stay home

Rutgers has three problems that are difficult to overcome

The snobbery effect. I know RU grads that wouldn't even consider having their children go to RU.
Lack of Marketing. RU needs to put a lot more $$$ into marketing the school and tell the world why it is the top public school in the area.
Have to be more selective with admission. See point one.

This goes for all students including the athletes!!!!

"Snobbery effect " ? You are joking here.
We are talking about football families here not the Fencing team.
The stretch some people will make to rationalize our football staff's NJ recruiting disasters.

I appreciate you taking the time to share that information with us. Throwing in Keith's comments, this is one of the most interesting and informative threads I have ever read here.

Both of you also seem like such stand-up guys. Thanks again for being willing to share such info.

There has always been a snobbery effect back to the 70's. I have seen HS teachers actively "recruit" students to their alma maters, instead of being neutral as they should be.

Love hearing from those who been there and those who know first hand because of their relationship with someone involved.
Thanks for sharing [thumb2]

CUBUFFS ... another question if you don't mind.

What happened to Colorado? I mean, when I grew up watching football they were pretty fun to watch (yes, I grew up watching CFB around the time of Kordell Stewart).

Of course they don't live in a fertile recruiting environment, but I assume they can still take from Texas, Cali, Oklahoma, etc. Why are they a bit of an after thought (in terms of results and hype) over the past decade or more?

President Gordon Gee is no longer there. Do you think what is going on at Rutgers is unique? Colorado is very similar with haters from Colorado State and at the state house in Denver. President Gee was the difference. Remember in early 2000s Ohio State reestablished itself among the top programs because Gee loved sports. At Colorado he gave Coach Mac any and everything he wanted to be successful. They went national with recruiting and promised results now instead of later. They cut some corners, but got the results the wanted. It all went downhill fast after President Gee and Coach Mac left. The haters took control thinking they could do better. Rick the rat couldn't win with his players and he was hand picked a b day forced onto Coach Mac. Colorado did give a Coach Mac protégé (Barnett) a change due to an outcry from Coach Mac. Coach Barnett had success right away, but the haters were at it again. At the end of Coach Barnett's stay he was undermined to make it easier to fire him. There are those at Colorado who want to see sports moved to the background of college life. It will be hard for them to sustain success with the current support.
