Holloway

Try reading the Hall board-- they're disgusted with him. Typical grass is greener crowd around here.Insane.

Don't give me the "You backed over my dog" look every time I miss a free throw. It leaves you no where to raise things when I actually do back over your dog. Personally I need a coach who calms down my own over reaction and builds me up. I know SHU players like Holloway but it would not be for me.

Holloway is an excellent coach who brought a St. Peters Team to the Elite 8. He should have earned an NCAA bid last year but instead won an NIT Championship. Holloway is tough to play for because he is a perfectionist and rides his players hard in practice. Those who stick with him get better (eg. Davis, Richmond, Samuels and Coleman). The players transferring out of the program were either non-power 6 players or received large offers from another school that SHU couldn't match (e.g. Davis and Richmond). That's the problem Shaheen has this year and beyond. SHU probably has the smallest NIL budget in the Big East. He therefore had to gamble on players who were highly ranked in high school but had below par freshmen seasons at their respective schools (e.g. Middleton, Yaldon, Dual, and Harmon). Thus far, his recruiting strategy has failed. Saturday's game againstRutgers was the best his team played all year so there's hope for a turnaround. Unfortunately, Shaheen has to be thinking about going to another school with a large NIL budget. He's very loyale to SHU but he has to think about his career in coaching going forward.
I think everything in here is 100% correct except he has to think about his coaching career going forward.

George Blaney
Louis Orr
Bobby Gonzalez
Kevin Willard
Shaheen Holloway.

For the most part I can argue that the coaches have been solid to good on paper.

The general concern in how fans take ONE game and ignore the other 11 is wild.

If I said to RU fans that we should look solely at how RU played Bama or Texas A&M and ignore the other 9 games, would be burned to the ground here.

There's an absolute lack of reality about how Holloway outcoacbed Pike, when a player got an uncontested dunk on a drive and a handful for curls for drives and drop offs for dunks.....if that's coaching, OK.....LOL

The RU team went 13-28 from the FT line and would have won by 10 to 11, with a normal FT shooting outing.

The other major issue is where Chow and others are lost here.....Seton Hall has NO 2025 HS recruits committed. In a day and age where it's a Big East school AND the school claims to be NIL strapped, how do you approach a 2025-26 season, with no HS recruits??

It is far more likely that a program plucks away a starter from SHU, if the season continues downhill......AND the answer is to

A) Overpay to keep that player..

B) Lose that player and have to overpay to get a similar player via the portal.

In BOTH instances, it's possible that a player coming into SHU via the portal is going to ask "what players are going to be here next year"???.....and the player that is productive and has years left will ask the coach, "Are we getting other players to help turn things around"???

I know there are fans in love with complaining about NIL, but it's coaching malpractice to not have a couple of HS recruits in each and every class, even if it's for depth purposes.

For the "Holloway outcoached Pike" crowd, the team is 5-7 & i don't see a clear direction on where they are going this year or next year. At least to me, there should be SOMETHING to build around beyond whatever the portal brings in a few months.

Then Holloway will have who to blame exactly?? It could be lack of NIL, could be Under Armour....could be any number of things.

All I know is recruiting and having a plan is 80% of the sport. And right now anyone can complain about the other 20% (NIL, game management, etc). If you don't recruit, how good of a coach can you actually be, in a Power type conference??

Not for nuthin, but someone posted The Hall has 4 top 100 players on their roster, which is more than we do (if accurate).
They do and they're all 2023 portal transfers. The question is, what core players are going to support those players that were holdover pieces from the prior 2 or 3 classes.

In actuality, both SHU and RU HS recruiting in 2021 to 2023, has put both programs in a bind, because those players are not upperclassmen, helping build a beidge on how the staff wants things to look.....,but SHU attempted to fix it, by bringing in 4 portal kids that were all Top 120 rated.

To say that and then compliment the coach, when they're 5-7, is wild to me.....how some fans view one game and nothing else, makes no sense whatsoever.

He has no talent. As far as having 4 of the top 100 players, Gavin Griffiths was no. 20 and he can barely see the court. You can't just judge a coach only by his record. If Bobby Knight coached Monmouth level talent in the Big 10 and lost 20 games would he be a bad coach? If Tom Izzo took over for Eddie Jordan and finished last in the Big 10 would he be a bad coach? Same is true of Holloway. He doesn't have the talent to be good in the Big East. It's hard for Fluox to understand any of this. He believes wins and losses are the only measure of a coach. Wins and losses are only relative to talent.

The thing is basically the job as a college HC is to get the talent.

FWIW Chow was defending Kyle Flood until his last breath.
I was a Floodie. . . . . . but for different reasons. In the end, no excuses, you get the job done (win), or get fired. Excuses, whatever they are, will not save your job, unless you are a government employee, or allegedly bang the gymnastics coach who allegedly was a tyrannical coach. . . . .

As for my posts on Holloway--too many of our fans seems to look lovingly at other coaches who are not good to put down our current coach. Not crying any tears for Holloway. He should have done his research before taking the job. Maybe the Hall will figure it out and come up with the money for NIL.

He's in his third season. When is he supposed to get the talent?

You're suffering from "the grass is greener" syndrome. If Holloway was the coach at RU and didn't bring in the talent to compete....you would want to replace him just like you have wanted to replace Pike. If RU lost by 30 with Holloway as coach, you would be calling for his head.

Doesn't SHU have reportedly much less NIL money than Rutgers?
Careful on throwing blame around then.

It was only a week ago many were saying "You can't blame HC Pike. He didn't have money to build out the roster around Ace and Dylan."

Perhaps the blame is with the SHU fanbase?

I'm sure there's some truth to that, too - lots of programs are going to have a hard time in this new era, because their fanbases won't have the $$$ to attract/retain players. Will be much harder for new coaches to cut their teeth in those programs before moving up.

Holloway… NFW! Wouldn’t want my kid playing for him.

LoL. Couple weeks ago 90% of this board wanted Pike fired. Not sure how you define "many"?

I know a guy who took over for Eddie Jordan and the worst roster in P5 and took that team from 7 wins to 15 the next year!

Sha is a great coach. With that said SHU is so royally fvcked in the nil age of basketball. They dont have many successful alums and the few they do have are mostly law school grads who dont have a connection to shu as their undergrad years were done elsewhere.

Mo Vaughn quietly has made a MASSIVE amount of money on affordable housing. Not sure hes involved in SHU athletics though

They don’t have many successful alums? What a pretentious, egotistical little twit you are.

I’m surprised, with their successful history , that they struggle with nil to that degree. Meanwhile St. John’s has one sugar daddy and can do whatever they want

Correct. Seton Hall is on the level with a county college. I say this as someone who grew up a rabid seton hall fan and didnt even apply there.

How many people do you personally know who did their undergrad there who are making serious money? And keep in mind its a super small school so volume wise, naturally they're already at a disadvantage.

Not playing this game as it’s insulting on so many levels. I wouldn’t even know how to define “serious” money. It would be much easier to define the enormity of your ego, or the level of your shallowness.

I’ll define serious money for you.

The irony of Seton Hall being at a disadvantage during the NIL era when they took full advantage of the "let's just hire handlers, coaches and uncles of recruits" less than a decade ago is certainly not lost on me.

It's very amusing.

I think a way to think about the ability and willingness for Alums to contribute to NIl is to look at endowment size. seton hall is $300mm. Rutgers is $2bn. Ohio state is $8bn. Harvard is $53bn.

They just don't have a large alumni base, and many of them have other collegiate allegiances because they were SHU grad students - don't know about their level of success, but the pool is already smaller. There are also plenty of folks who have split allegiances, who follow SHU basketball but another college's football program (e.g., Rutgers, Notre Dame, etc) - which can impact NIL levels.

SHU either needs a very wealthy benefactor who is not shy about throwing cash around, or they need a coach who is exceptional at glad-handing and getting money to flow into the NIL coffers. Or they need the NIL environment to change through some sort of regulation that allows them to compete against schools with more NIL advantages.

In year 3, Holloway is falling flat. He needs to find a way to get talent into the program next year, or there's a good chance he'll be out on his ear and they'll be looking to strike gold somewhere else.

As enjoyable as it is to watch Seton Hall hit rock bottom, it’s in our best interests for them to at least be mediocre, otherwise we will sit on this landmine every year. It’s a rivalry that often comes down to the wire no matter the records, better for them to be a “good Big East win” for us, than this year where people could try to say “look they only beat that horrible Seton Hall team by 1 basket at the buzzer” … as much hate as I have for them and love the rivalry, if they turn into a black hole then we need to consider stopping the series, rather than sit on a 50/50 game to grenade our season every year

no. its in our best interest to be the only actual top level sports team in the area.

And we are.

And yes would be fine not playing them, along with every /any other BE team. The conference is headed down the dumper where it belongs, and it wasn't for Yukon they'd arleady be there.

Disagree. Think it’s good for us for both Princeton and SHU to be decent.

But I do see your point. I just don’t think we’re really competing with them.

I'm big on the SHU rivalry, but if they fall off the NIL cliff and become a perennially 150-250 team, then we'd really need to consider ending the series. SHU needs to be an annual Q1/Q2 resume game, not an annual Q3/Q4 landmine.

There still has to be an explanation as to why they lost to some out of conference opponents
He certainly should have had the edge in talent

The irony of this thread is that if we lost, there would be numerous posts about how SHU is better than their losses and it's not as bad a loss.

But since we barely won at home, they are a terrible team and Holloway is a terrible coach.
If they are so bad, why did we need a buzzer beater 3 at home to win?
We obviously had our problems
At least we are playing better than at that point in time
Pike gets some credit for that

The NIL argument is 100% stupidity......they have to recruit HS kids as a baseline of your job description. They had TWO HS 2024 Recruits on this year's roster and ZERO commits for 2025.

You get 13 scholarships to allocate. The portal is for backfilling gaps in the roster, not for NIL to fill out your roster.

6 wins and 12 losses with no depth or plan to build around and people are saying he's a great coach?? How hard is it to find 2 to 3 recruiting pieces out of HS per year, f you claim to be a Big East team??

Even mid majors recruit HS kids.....

Getting major conference level HS kids requires NIL, too. And then more to retain them. It's a new world.

Holloway seemingly isn't inspiring a lot of contributions, though, and hasn't been able to get the most out of the roster he's assembled.
