Hope they press us

If the Johnnies think they can press us in the backcourt to cause turnovers and keep us from setting up our offense, which is deadly right now, we will burn them with quick passes that lead to runouts or wide open threes. Let them try. I’m anxious to see how we respond.

They will certainly press when Geo is out of the game. We do not have a solid back up PG at the moment. McConnell isn’t ready yet.

Be careful what you wish for.
Would rather wish for it than hope it doesn’t happen. Gotta have a “bring it on” attitude this year and I believe Pike will have them ready for it. Best to show we can handle it now, to take that away from future teams gameplanning us with it.

Did you see us handle the press against Drexel?

A capable backup PG who can handle the rock under pressure is certainly something we don't have. With that said, that problem, IMO, is more of a concern with 3-quarter or full-q on the ball pressure and running the halfcourt offense and less about the press. You don't break a press by dribbling through it (usually)... you beat it with smart passing, good spacing and good off the ball motion. The fact that we have a couple of bigs who can pass certainly helps. And we certainly have more than one guard who can dribble. With the press break, I'd be more concerned with our young guys in general panicking and making dumb dumb passing decisions, both our bigs and our smalls.

We arent playing FDU or Drexel. I don't want to see a press.

If I am watching tape of Rutgers and seeing how efficient we are offensively I'd try to give their half court offense as little time as possible to get a good shot. Light pressure can wear Geo out by the end of game AND shorten the time each possession we have to work. This team can shoot 50% from 3 when wide open. What is our shooting percentage with the clock under 5 seconds? Hasn't been an issue so far.

Exactly. I like our length and passing ability which is how I imagined we would break the press, not so much by dribbling. We can make them pay.

I’m anxious to see how we handle it. If we handle it well and make them pay (with quick passes that lead to runouts, alley-oops and wide open pull-up treys) we will have eliminated or at least reduced the likelihood that teams will use the press against us going forward.

We have height and length to see and pass over the press and EO Harper Thiam who are bigger wings or stretch 4's who can pass dribble and shoot. Myles is an excellent passer and huge target. He can flash to the middle and releive the pressure. If they press us, we will be raining open 3's.

I'm not concerned with being pressed if we have Geo, Kiss, EO, Thaim, Shaq D/Johnson on the floor.

If I'm Mullin, I'm going full court every second McConnell and/or Mathis are on the floor. That concerns me. McConnell is unproven, and Mathis has shown a proclivity for TO's.

Can’t disagree although I’d rather see Myles in there for his combination of length, court vision, and passing.

totally disagree....when Drexel started to pressure RU immediately turned it over and struggled putting points on the board. Team not ready to handle the press
That’s why I want to see it from the Johnnies. If we can prepare well for their press I say bring it, and let’s attack it with our passing. Let’s turn a weakness into a strength that gets us some easy buckets until they back off. Will serve notice to other teams not to try it, or they will get burned.

You can press if you have depth...if you press without waves of subs to stay fresh, you're legs will not be there to rebound and shoot jumpers into the 2nd half. I don't know if St John's can press but the test will be if RU has a lead most of the game and a team mounts a rally and presses.

Not only does RU have to prove they can break a press and score, they have to make their FTs....i can see Harper Jr and Mathis getting dunks if we execute the press break properly, we can pass the ball and make lobs towards the rim now.

I expect lots of pressing from SJU. I agree that if we can break it we should take the ball to the rim versus settling for 3's. It will be a good test and I hope we play well.

I think the best thing to have happened is where Drexel pressed. It took us by surprise. Pikiell was screaming “who’s in the middle”?He then called a called a time out and we regrouped. I’m positive we will be better prepared when (not if) the Johnnies press. We’re in good hands here coaching wise.

I think Pike will coach circles around Mullin

I think you see a ton of half court pressure from St Johns.

I watched some of both games and don't think their bench is too long so I agree Rutgers doesn't get a ton of 90 feet pressure.

Opportunity for backdoor cuts and layups/dunks.

I didn't think their zone was great against Bowling Green

They score in bunches and RU needs to minimize the runs they make.

Keep the game in the 60's.

Playing a zone is a bad idea against a 3 point shooting team like us. (Man that felt good to say)

Agree but I hope the game is not in the 60s for both teams as I think that bodes well for SJU.

I have faith in Pikiell. The Johnnies seem very concerned on their board about our height & length, our 3 point shooting and Pikiell being an excellent coach. One guy even mentioned that Mullin buried his head in his hands against Bowling Green and appeared lost at times. Here's hoping we can play well and get the W.

Issa and Myles are soooo tall and long. Such a big easy target to toss it to in the middle to break the press. If Myles is really the best passer on the team as Pike said (and he may be )having a big man with those skills really should make beating the press relatively easy

Don't see any chance this game is in the 60s. This isn't last year. This game will be really high scoring

F' the press.

I want a "W: Time for Mathis to step it up a notch. Also want Myles / Shaq 1 to dominate the paint.

EO with another solid double -double.

And want 6 members of the team to hit double figures in points.
Also want to outrebound St. J, more steals, blocks and assists and less turnovers.
