How bout a $1000/plate spaghetti dinner at Schiano’s to support NIL??

There is no next level with another coach because only Schiano can recruit next level talent to Rutgers.
Nonsense. And when is he gonna start recruiting that next level talent? A handful of NFL prospects is not enough to get a team to regularly win in the Big Ten right now.

What a loser mentality
What difference does any fans mentality make to RUFB winning or losing? The “loser mentality” type posts are a pretty clear example of people struggling to understand their reality. The only people whose mentality matters are the coaches and players. The fanbase’s mentality is irrelevant.

Be careful what you ask for.

GS 1.0 was pushed out with pitchforks resulting in Ashes by the bumbling administration along with their consultants. Nothing has changed to lead to be believe we are rid of the keystone cops within RU.
1.0 was not pushed out. He left for Tampa less than a week before signing day.

He started recruiting it 5 years ago. Powell and Longerbeam, among others, will be playing Sundays next fall. There are 4 4* players in our incoming class.

The issue is a number of guys are injured, and that has hurt our performance.

If we had next level recruiting the past 5 years, we wouldn’t be quite so impacted by all the injuries. The drop off from our starters to their backups is huge.

Plenty of coaches could come in and replicate this level of recruiting. If we want to get truly next level, we need to be much better funded for NIL. And then we would have to talk about GS’s game-day coaching ceiling.

Right now, until we get more NIL funding, it doesn’t matter all that much who coaches. We will struggle to win more big ten games than we lose most seasons. Just like now.

We beat Washington and Virginia Tech. We beat Boston College and Syracuse and Miami. we were more competitive against Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. We have made it to the next level from where we were, prior to Schiano.

Catastrophic injuries foiled our grand plans for this year.

Plenty of coaches could not come to Rutgers and replicate this kind of recruiting. And they would not come due to inadequate infrastructure. Urban Meyer flat out implied he would not take the Rutgers job due to insufficient support.

Of course it matters who coaches, as we could revert back to 0-3 win seasons quite easily, something no one wants.
Penn State, Ohio State, and Michigan, will continue to be above our level. But with our recruiting, we'll have an opportunity against everyone else.

If what you are saying is accurate that no coaches more elite than Schiano will take this job (which I would disagree), then Rutgers football is as good as it gets. Schiano has been a Rutgers coach for 14-15 years. He is for the most part the same coach as he was when he first started. To expect that he will all of a sudden become elite with top level recruits is silly.

Has any elite Coach EVER seriously considered this job? It took Joe Pa 1 second to turn Fred Gruninger down and recommend his assistant Dick Anderson.

Schiano is the only coach who has come here and established a program, twice. He brings in good classes, develops his kids, graduates his kids, and sends a few kids to the NFL each year. Last year we went to a bowl game. This year injuries have hurt us.

But overall, That’s good enough for the level of support he’s working with, and that’s not a small feat at Rutgers. The Rutgers job requires coaches to work harder for less results. He’s brought his share of top level recruits with 4 4 ⭐️ players.

You almost make it seem like we have the support of a crappy FCS school. Let’s not forget we are a B1G school who is getting almost a full share of revenue. Maybe the school and program needs to look inward to improve finances before requesting large amounts of of money from donors.

Our support is towards the bottom of the big ten.
Our full share of revenue is eaten up by operational expenses. Holloway said the athletic department will never be in the black.

Hard to beat teams that have more to offer recruits. Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Maryland and other schools have state of the art facilities . Their alumni have paid the price of success. If people want the football team to be more successful, they are going to have to pony up. Indiana has spent $86M upgrading their facilities since 2009 and spent $3M on NIL this year.

Do other schools use up all their full share in operational expenses? Do you have any proof of that?

Things have changed. NIL, with the transfer portal, is now a major factor, possibly the biggest factor, in recruiting. Teams with ample NIL funding can compete for the best players, with the usual rules dictating who gets the pick of the litter (i.e the teams with the the best chance to make a NC run, have name-brand coaches, have long traditions of winning, etc.). Teams with decent NIL funding but less of the aforementioned things get second rung players.

Teams, like RUFB, with negligible, non-competitive NIL funding, and none of the other stuff. get recruiting table scraps, with a few noteworthy exceptions. There will be the occasional momentary exceptions to that rule. But the NIL effect is almost certainly going to expand in its impact over time.

By far, the easiest path to a winning big ten football program is a massive infusion of NIL money. Spend enough money and the coach, while still obviously important, becomes much less important.

It's this type of small time thinking, coupled with the multiyear rebuild and fancy sayings, that's the issue
You'd think Greg was on Saban's level w/these types of views

Al you are a poster who has a lot of passion for Rutgers.

I particularly liked the quote you said about Schiano and recruiting.

"Schiano has honed his approach over 16 years and I'm not willing to go back to square one".

Transfer Portal and NIL has dramatically changed college football recruiting.

All coaches need to change their approach if they are to succeed in this new recruiting era.

SMU has 17 Transfer Portal players on their 2 deep and Indiana has 23 Transfer Players on their roster.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Because SMU and Indiana alumni stepped up with millions of dollars in NIL Funding to allow them to get players. We don’t have similar resources, so we get what we can. We really needed an impact tight end, but instead, we moved a DE over to tight end, and that worked till he got injured.

Rutgers is built different from FSU. We don’t have the booster NIL dollars to turn things around quickly. We have to mostly develop 3 star kids over 1-3 years before they’re ready to impact. We need a new Fieldhouse to attract recruits.

Schiano can’t recruit like he did prior to the NIL era. And he’s not a good enough game-day coach, at least on offense, to make average players good enough to beat NIL-funded really good players across the big ten.

We either need lots of NIL in which case Schiano can get good enough players to compete as long as we can get a more creative OC, or we need to replace Schiano with a coach that can do way more with less.

That’s not true. This years incoming class is arguably our best ever with 4 4 ⭐️ recruits helping to fill in roster holes. We do need NIL to fill in other roster holes but that’s what we’ve been doing the last two years. Dymere Miller transferred in from Monmouth and is our #1 Receiver. Athan transferred in and is our #1 QB.
Malcolm Ray transferred in and is our #1 NT.
So we will simply be repeating the strategy previously employed.

Yes, he and every other O weapon is being squandered. Look at the scores, Al.
That’s not due to strategy. Quarterback has to be a little more accurate with his throws. Against USC, he missed at least 3 TDs or pass interference calls as the receiver had their coverage beat.

Who is responsible for recruiting and choosing the starting QB?

I'm not someone who says we need to fire Schiano, even though I didn't want him back. Here's here, and barring off-field issues, he's not going anywhere for another 2-3 years at least.

But he's never done anything to demonstrate that he's some sort of irreplaceable head coach. That's just silly hero worship, not rational, logical, critical thought.

Incoming class means nothing until it's on campus and performing. Speculation is BS. We are what our record says we are.

Miller is a decent WR, but we need more than one decent WR. Athan is a discard from another Big Ten team - not exactly how RUFB builds up a better FB program. Our OL and DL have been underperforming all season long, even before injuries. So again, not sure why you'd cite a NT as an example of good recruiting.

All the things that go right and wrong, for all the players on the field for the entire game, is what leads to the end result in wins and losses. We have yet to have a single winning conference record in the Big Ten. We're very unlikely to do so again in this 5th year of GS's second stint. So recruiting clearly isn't good enough right now. We can always point at next year and say it'll get better, but that's just BS speculation.

It's great that you are so optimistic and support our players the way you do. I appreciate that. I support our players too, and prefer not to write posts like this which are pessimistic in nature.

But it's pretty clear that either we need different coach or else we need a ton more NIL funding, if we want to regularly win in the Big Ten. Possibly we need both, although I'll allow that until we have enough NIL funding, it's not clear any coach anywhere, including GS, can turn RUFB into a top-half Big Ten team.

It means something because most of the class can reasonably be expected to sign, though there is always a chance a few could decide to go elsewhere. GS can turn Rutgers into a top half Big Ten Team if he gets the support.

Miller, Black, and Duff are a formidable receiving group with Dremel thrown in as needed. 11 catches for 131 yards vs USC is an amazing performance. He will be playing Sundays next year. Athan needs to improve his ball placement. We just need to keep building the talent base and this incoming class will go a long way towards doing that, especially fortifying our LB Corp.

FSU started out in a worse position then Rutgers

We were an all-girls school until the late 40's, then were pedestrian at best in the early stages of playing (30 years), all while having a large, prestigious, and established school already in state (UF) that was trying every and anything in their power to keep FSU down

Bobby came in and changed things. He thought big and dreamt bigger. Everyone needs a break in life to get high up, and our big break was the Pell scandal at UF that allowed recruiting to really take off. However, Bobby had already built the foundation for success leading up to that (just like Greg has built our foundation for success here OTB)

We're still playing catch up
The ACC sucks, and we're 40/mil year behind peers in conference revenue. We don't have generations of doctors, lawyers and successful business people to donate funds. We're the smallest (land wise) public school in the state, limiting our ability to build. Also, Tallahassee is very remote and tough to get to, making for other logistical obstacles.

The point is, Rutgers has none of these issues
Ample land, no big in-state competitors, a visionary coach, near NYC for big donor / corporation money, fertile recruiting, etc.

I'm telling you, and it's something i truly believe with all my heart....If it can be done at FSU, it can be done at Rutgers

Again, all that is speculative and optimistic. I'm results-oriented. So we'll have to wait and see what happens.

But without a whole lot more NIL funding, I don't see it happening. An occasional good year with 6+ wins overall, sure. Regularly getting to 8+ wins with winning conference records every year? I'll believe that when I see it happen. We're not even close right now and we have yet to see how this season's bad luck with injuries impacts the program.
