As my son said, it looks like someone created it with Microsoft Word and clip art. Is that the best we can do?

I like it. It's the first simple thing I have seen the school produce outside of the block R.

What in the world is that logo supposed to be ? NO ONE will know it has anything to do with Rutgers. It looks like something a soccer team would have.

Other than 1766, does anything on that seal have any Rutgers-related meaning?

If you look all around Rutgers you will see the Sun has importance as our motto is :‘Sol Iustitiae Et Occidentem Illustra‘ (“Sun of Righteousness, Enlighten also the West”). The Latin is a conflation of the Biblical texts of Malachi 4:2 and Matthew 13:43.

Way too plain. Looks like an 8 year old made this with Clip Art. Its literally just a dumbed down version of the Harvard seal.

WOW! what a shock people complaining about something on this Board.

Solution: Write a check for 50K to the school. That way they can hire a Design firm to dress it up for you all and waste just your $ an not the schools. Otherwise just STFU!

Why do these institutions think they need new and modern "seals"?

Who is selling Rutgers, and even Harvard, on this idea?

This reminds me of the over-produced Scarlet knight...

We did not need those, and thus, we paid way too much for them. It was just like NBC paying godknowswhat for that N and now they are back to the peacock...

The people who originally worked on the original seal put in just as much good work as the Rutgers people or their hired "designers" have done now.

Why do people continue to want to put their thumbprint on something so old?

Just stop it.. the revisionists are egocentric bureaucrats wasting money on this.

Di some politicians wife get paid 5 figures for the design?

j/k, I think

The 3 stars don't represent RU being one of the few schools that is all three - land grant, colonial college, and the third thing? That's what I thought it was. And they couldn't even use the script 1766 font like in the QC logo? Times new roman was the way to go I guess.

Since I did the original post, I feel like it is my obligation to provide alternatives. I like the basic elements of the original design, but it's too busy and looks like cookie cutter clip art. I think the logo would look better with just some minor modifications. Here are my two suggestions:

And finally, one that we all can agree on...

First things first Jerry. Clean up the name of this thread. What you have posted is the 250th shield. This in no way replaces or supersedes the established seal that has been around since the early 1940's. Nor does this obviate the "informal seal" that is used with the Rutgers logotype and was designed about ten to twelve years ago for such broader use. Additionally, this 250th Shield is not to be used for "athletics" purposes. This is solely for academic and administrative purposes.

Second,
Is the color salmon? I can't read the numbers.

If you are seeing "salmon" then you need to get your tail to a ophthalmologist ASAP. The standard color of "Scarlet" for the University is Pantone 186 which is definitely red and not "salmon".

Third, for all the complaints, the shield design is rather standard following heraldic format. The scarlet color refers to an eagerness to serve country as warrior & martyr. The sunburst at the top of the Escutcheon is a reference to the standard crest and motto: the starburst. The crown on the dexter with 1766 refers to the standing charter of the State of New Jersey from the King of England and the date of charter of the University. The sinister side presents the standard of academics with the text. As for the stars, as others noted, it is to represent New Jersey as being the 3rd state to enter the Union.

For those that are actually interested in learning, instead of complaining, about the celebration effort, visit: http://250.rutgers.edu/about/resources

If it is for the 250th.. isn't it pretty common to used "250" somewhere.. or "1766-2016".. It is unclear what purpose this "shield" serves.
