....for that NOT being called a "jump ball" and instead giving PSU the TO. WOW!!!! He was CLEARLY tied up in the corner a good second or two prior to the TO being given (and NW had the arrow...).

*** and you guys know I don't bitch about officiating unless something is REALLY wrong lol!

Just see one blatant missed call in big moments over and over.

How that ref in the corner didn't make the held ball call and let the other ref way behind the play give PSU the time out. Wow. Not the ref fault who gave the TO. Bit the one who didn't call the held ball.
The ref is standing right there. It's like 3 feet in front of him. Inexcusable

Wait until you get a glimpse of the touch fouls SEC/B12/ACC/Pac officials will be calling against us in the tourney. You're going to LOVE B1G officiating lol!
If they have even a basic understanding of the rule book it should be an upgrade. No shot that was a timeout.

It's the way games are called in those conferences. A LOT "tighter" which could be an issue with the way we play D (especially for Cliff). I'm stunned when I watch games from those conferences it's like watching the NBA. Nobody plays D either lol!

I can deal with subjective. It’s when the Big Ten refs continue to get objective calls wrong at the end of games like whether players are out of bounds or whether a timeout was properly called that I have issues.

I honestly thought the move to the Big Tem would mean better.. more fair.. refs.

It is just as bad as what we have seen in every conference.

I think they got to end this "don't show up the refs" nonsense. They are bad. They should be complained about when they are bad.

Maybe all the conferences should hire an independent referee rating organization NOT MADE UP by former referees. Make it staffed by former players who take a test on the rules and a couple rules mavens who can advise them on odd situations.

Also.. keep stats on refs.. how many whistles by which refs for and against which teams/players/coaches. Track the stats to reveal any biases. Track the stats against point spreads and home/away etc.

Then in the graded stats.
-How accurately can they call a shooting foul?
-How accurate are they ar identifying travels
-Charges
-How many no-calls do they "make" when they should have made a call for someone right in front of them?
-etc etc

Track it all. Pay the best better.. fire the worst or send to remedial school/training.

And eliminate their ability to call technical fouls for complaining or "showing them up". Just eliminate that BS. Let them learn to ignore it like football officials do.

A transparent rating system sounds like a reasonable idea for accountability

Just curious. I don't read other boards but do fans from other conferences complain about Refs as much as B1G fans do? AND, I agree B1G Refs are the worst.

When B1G refs get to referee NCAA games, how do they rate?

Theoretical question.

You have 2 separate officials looking at 2 different things. (we talked about this with the OSU play)

1 official is looking at jump ball
1 official is looking elsewhere

the official looking at jumball hasn't declared it a jumpball YET
the other official is approached by PSU player asking for a TO.

Do we want the official not to grant the timeout?
OR is he supposed to be watching an area that is already being watched by another official?

Remember the argument you made for the officials with the OSU missed call.

I think (don't know) the officiating was correct here. It was still PSU ball until the ref blows the whistle saying it was a tie up

While I am not going to support or praise the quality of officiating, I think we would be better off if the players were less demonstrative in claiming their innocence when called for a foul. Most times a foul has been committed and the only thing it does is make the officials job harder and get the crowd riled up.

I think the refs are giving players much more leeway these days and I don't think it is a good thing. Do they make mistakes? Sure they do and sometimes they can be very costly. But the interactions need to be more limited to the ref and the HC. Maybe some type of limited challenge system might help fix the issue with what is reviewable and what is not.

Yes, every team’s fans think the refs are out to get them, and also think that their conference has the worst referees.

Keep in mind that in basketball, these “Big Ten refs” are also officiating games all over the country in a wide range of conferences.

Many of our officials rate very highly, as evidenced by their progression forward as the NCAA tourney moves along (and getting NCAA games to begin with).

Two. Completely different scenarios in my home opinion. The Ohio State missed call was an illegal play. PERIOD. They never should have been a shot.

Now, the rest of your question is legit, and in my humble opinion the play is on the ball, not off the ball, so that is a tie call. Possession arrow to Northwestern. Northwestern ball. Plain and simple.

It isn’t a tie up until the whistle was blown. Did the official wait too long to blow the whistle for the tie up?

I've seen less obvious jump balls whistled in a nano second by these refs. Player trapped and one NW player had his hands on the ball. Was the ref waiting for threesome to breakout 🤷‍♂️ because there's no obvious explanation why the whistle wasn't blown for the tie up.

If the official 5 feet directly in front of the play is "looking elsewhere" he should be fired for incompetence
