So if Chris Ash and Ed Warinner of Ohio State are in the conversation for Rutgers head coach and one of them actually takes the job... does Rutgers have to wait until January if OSU qualifies for the BCS game? What is the usual practice in situations like this?

Typically people leave right away. It's an important time and whomever we hire, their future is immediately tied to RU.
Hermann stayed. Many others have stayed as well. I think that's the right way to go. They can start to gather a staff that will be recruiting hard. Main message: Watch the BCS and watch our future defense in action.

Let ABC/ESPN talk about Rutgers and how we are getting that coordinator throughout the game.

Herman was a head coach. I think head coaches and assistants differ.

I think dave may be referring to Herman's time as the OSU OC; he accepted the Houston HC job in mid-December 2014 but stayed at OSU for the NC game in January. After that victory, he was off to Houston.

I could certainly see that if it were a couple of weeks, and/or if there were an agreement with the coach. I would think if we hired Ash next week, he would want to be here right away. Too much that could happen between now and whenever OSU plays in a bowl that could affect his success here.

Given we are in the same conference I would expect we would want him right away. Conversely OSU would have concerns that the assistant was gathering info, and possibly leaning towards RU with recruits etc.

Best for all parties to separate immediately.

Coaches usually, but not always, leave before the bowl game. By staying, Herman was the OC in FBS' first playoff with a chance to be the OC for the first National Champion crowned in that first playoff. Playing for a National Championship is a little different than playing to be the Rose Bowl champion, isn't it? I don't think we're talking about the same situation. I think the right coach will determine how much time and effort he needs to spend at RU to get the program ready to succeed.

I think they would stay through this weekends conference Championship games. I'm hoping we would have our new coach by Sunday night, but because of NFL games taking away interest, I'm pretty confident a Monday afternoon news conference will be held. I hope it's someone that will take us to the next level. The fact it's taking so long gives me hope that it's being done right, and will be a choice we'll look back on as a true turning point.

If your team is in the CHAMPIONSHIP process - you likely stay .... if you win it all - you get some nice trinkets

if your team is getting ready to go to a non-championship bowl game glorious as it may be - you probably courteously & graciously say your thank-yous and wish the team great success - and then jump into your new job as fast as possible.

If I'm RU I only allow him to stay if OSU is in the play-off.

Urban can prep his own offense for the Rose Bowl/NYD bowl.

I make him starting immediately a condition of the contract.

You quit immediately, it's not a championship run. It's just a top tier bowl. Even Brian Kelly left Cincy before their 2nd BCS bowl. Playoff run is a special circumstance, everything else you start your new job. Kirby Smart or maybe a Brent Venables are the only ones this year I'd give some leeway.

its great exposure if he can stay. its free advertising for Recruiting. ABC will be shooting TV stills of him mentioning "Rutgers will have a bright future under this guy".

it would be up to Urban. He may ask his assistant to leave right away to avoid distractions.

One other consideration is timing. The dead period starts on the 14th and lasts until after the playoff. So if we hired a guy after that, there isnt a huge benefit to him starting for us right away - it probably is more beneficial to have him on TV coaching the NCG. But if you hire him this week - yes - you want him on campus NEXT weekend to talk to recruits, not fiddling away in some office in Columbus.
