The secondary losses is not the reason you lost to Penn State. You gave up 330 yards rushing to a team who had struggled to move the ball. It was a terrible front seven. I find it hard to believe none of those linebackers could start or a guy like Sickles at DE. I just find it hard to believe that a defense ranked 85th in the country in total defense is so talented that only 1 of the starting 5 players on the nation 10th ranked in total defense could start for them.
Yes, and 129 of those rushing yards came on two plays which were defensive communication breakdowns with players out of position to make a tackle at the second level.
The defense is starting to get better in that area, and also in the middle with new starters this year at NT, DT, and MLB. We only have 3 guys on this defense who were starting last year. It's taking them some time to get chemistry, and our DCoordinator has also been a bit rough in the early going this year (possibly trying to put the pieces back together after losing so many players).
And as has been said, it was a bad game. The following game, we held Kansas to 2.1 ypc, who has averaged 3.5 ypc in their other games. Against MSU, we held them to 3.5 ypc, who had been averaging 4.5 ypc coming into the game.
With your defensive comparisons, though:
Johnson would very likely start over Joseph
Sickels would be in the rotation, but may not be starting over Mera/Lambert (though he might)
Bell likely wouldn't be starting over Longa or Gause
Cabinda likely wouldn't be starting over Lewis
Bowen isn't even regular starter for you guys, and wouldn't start ahead of Longa or Gause.
And yes, you're the 10th ranked in total defense.... three of the six teams you've played are also ranked lower than 100th in total offense (Temple 101, Army 112, SD State 115) and the only team that you've played ranked better than 50th (Indiana 31) was without their starting QB and RB (the second leading rusher in the Big Ten).
I would gladly take Zettel, Nassib, and Johnson off your hands, though... but only one of them is from NJ.
