If Zach Allen commits to RU, is he the favorite to win the QB job?

If he commits to RU then I will believe that our coaches are not impressed with either Laviano or Rettig as a starter. Id give him equal footing ( at least) with Laviano and Rettig to be the opening day starter.

Tell me if Allen can run as well...if he can...then his coming here would truly make it a race...

People are overlooking that to make this offense go the QB must be a credibible threat to run AT LEAST 7 times per game...and preferably 10-12

I didn't see any evidence in actual game plat that any of our QBs on our roster look to be this. QB scrambles is not the same thing as running the read option.

So you don't really know what you're talking about then.
And you do? Please expound, enlightened one . . . .

"Unlike most graduate transfer QBs that are looking for a new school, Zach Allen doesn't have much college game tape to show coaches. His college passing stats at TCU: 2-for-2 for 17 yards. That action came during the 2014 season in one game against Texas Tech."
"The 6-3, 210-pound Allen appeared in all 13 games last season for the Horned Frogs but that was as the team's holder on kicks and a back-up wide receiver. He caught one pass for eight yards."

What did he say that's not true? No issue that he could not beat out Boykin. Most couldn't. But after 3 years he was still behind at least 2 others.

Shift's only mistake here is not buying into the grab every transfer because anyone is better than what's here mindset that is so prevalent on this site.

If he comes, I'll root like hell for him. Just tempering my expectations.

He completed both his passes.
Legendary.
Same passing percentage as Janarion Grant. Janarion's receiver was Chris Laviano.

We can fix all this vitriol by making Janarion Grant QB (he would be great on the run), and make Laviano and Allen WRs. Done.

And I was in no way putting Zach Allen down. We know less about how he will perform than Gio and Dare, who we saw in the spring game. Here's to hoping one of the prospects steps up and sets the field on fire.

I have no clue how good this guy is, but Ryan Tannehill played WR before QB at TAMU.... That worked out well for him

Texas produces 6 times the number of 3/4/5 recruits with only 3 times the population compared to NJ. His lack of playing time at TCU does not make him less interesting given RU's lack of a clear starter.

[2012] Elite 11 Selection Show Highlights from Trent Dilfer

Trent Dilfer on Zach Allen:

“This was Tony Romo’s favorite player at the (Dallas) regional, and I agree. Zach Allen, to me, is a young Colt McCoy with an even better arm. He plays the position the way I’m looking for it to be played – sudden. Quick and fast of mind, body and arm. Everything he does has urgency. He’s a playmaker and he can beat you with his legs. Syracuse is very lucky to have Zach Allen come to their school.”

There is a lot more to it behind the stats.

I think you need to ask if Laviano could have beat out Boykin. Could he have even made the TCU roster?

He redshirted first year and switched to WR to try to get on the field his 3rd year. Only had one year to get any throws in a real game and being a backup at TCU doesn't mean your not good. He was the 18th ranked QB coming out of HS and an elite 11 finalist. He is the only spread option QB on the roster with college experience. He will be more familiar with the type of offense and a skill set more suited for the offense compared to CL and HR.

In a vacuum a grad transfer with no game experience wouldn't be a big deal but considering all the factors this is a great fit and will at least be in the mix to start. I would be surprised if Laviano beats him out. Laviano stink with a pro style offense. He's supposed to be better in an offense that doesn't fit?

I get it but Allen was not just beaten out by Boykin. He was 4th string there, so let's see what we have before making assumptions. In any case, happy to have a kid choose RU.

I think you need to ask why your first post was so dickish. No need to say "You do not know what I was talking about about."

Now you are moving the goal posts to a transitive theory on whether Laviano could have beaten out Boykin? That's hilarious.
Why don't we do that same analysis with LSU. By your analysis, Rettig should have rocketed ahead in this year's competition (putting last year aside).

Laviano's 247 composite was 0.8597 and had P5 offers from RU and BC. Zach Allen's was 0.8361and had P5 offers from TCU, Minnesota and Syracuse.
Rettig's 247 composite was 0.9311, and he had an off the chart list of offers from P5 schools.

You know what that all means? Absolutely nothing in 2016.

Funny how people here can twist anything to fit their narrative. Guy moves to WR = "does anything to help the team, great to have a guy like that in the program" or "guess he sucked at his old position, totally worthless."

I have no opinion beyond the fact that accumulating talent is a good thing.

EDIT: I have more of an opinion. I would guess that Chris Ash and Drew Mehringer aren't particularly high on either Laviano or Rettig running their offense (based on spring quotes and this transfer) and probably hinted as much to get Allen to come and join a wide-open QB competition.

We should not be overly excited based on his reported career.... He might turn out to be good, but would not bet he beats out our entire group of qbs.

Before knocking his chances, I'll just see how the depth chart looks by the time season starts.
Since Chris and Hayden haven't set the QB position on fire enough to take the lead in the starting QB competition and the other QBs don't look like their in the mix ( freshman not included) a new face might jump the others for # 3 and can't say if there won't be QBs transferring because they don't think their see the field if they stay.

I wouldn't be surprised if RU wanted Allen and promised him a fair shot, because Ash knows
one or two of his QBs are thinking about transferring and the freshman QB coming in probably will need a red-shirt year before being ready to play college ball at the B1G level.

Not true. He's a savior! Both his college passes prove it!

His nickname's gonna be ZAM, short for Zach Allen the Messiah! Heck, since he's played both QB and WR, he can throw passes to himself. The New Sanu!!!

He was never 4th string.

He like Cool Papa Bell. He's so fast he can turn out the lights and be under the covers before the room gets dark.
