I do feel this will be a closer game than people think. Some of Al's points are valid. I would feel much better predicting an upset if Ash was some type of genius field general, but he's not. Even in a perfect scenario, with us at home, at night, with our team playing their absolute best and our fans going wild, I still think Meyer outcoaches his protege and OSU leaves with a victory. PS, I expect Greg to test Bolin with blitzes all night long.

The last time Jerry Kill faced Urban Meyer, with Meyers best OSU team, Minnesota fell 31-24. We've got a fighting chance.

Conditions are ripe for Rutgers to pull the upset this weekend, as the Ohio State team we are facing is flawed, and not as good as prior versions. Ohio State is particularly vulnerable in the secondary, due to youth. Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield threw for 386 yards, 3 Touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. Rutgers Kyle Bolin is going to have to raise his level of play, and demonstrate similar productivity for For Rutgers to have a chance. The Washington Huskies are better than Ohio State this year, and Rutgers played them competitively. Currently, Washington is ranked #6 and Ohio State is ranked #11 in the AP poll. Ohio State figures to fall out of the Top 25 should they lose to Rutgers.

Prior years, Rutgers linemen looked like they were playing on roller skates, when facing a team like Ohio State. That wasn't the case against Washington and most of the Nebraska game. Nebraska did wear the Rutgers defense out in the fourth quarter due to an 8 minute drive they executed in the third. Nevertheless, Rutgers defense did hold Nebraska to 1 TD and two field goals, in the second half, despite being on the field for 24 out of thirty minutes.

Key to Rutgers defensive improvement has been Rutgers improved defensive line play. The biggest revelation has been #99 DE Kevin Wilkins, who is constantly driving the opposing tackle into the backfield, disrupting running plays, and hurrying the quarterback. #50 NG Julius Turner is increasingly sharing more reps. #51 NG Sebastian Joseph is playing the best football of his career. #95 DT Jon Bateky and #58 DE Turay have also played well, making Rutgers defensive line one of the most improved in the Big Ten. The effectiveness of the line has made it more easier for the LBers to flourish. #6 Deonte Roberts is playing at an All Big Ten level, and is the biggest playmaker of the LB Corp. #15 Trevor Morris is probably the most improved Rutgers defensive player from game 1, and leads the team in tackles. #9 S Saquan Hampton has been our biggest playmaker in the secondary, and is third on the team in tackles. #2 S Kiy Hester is a ball hawk and leads the team in interceptions with 2. Overall, I've felt that the Rutgers defense has played well enough to win every single game.

The defenses efforts have been hampered by an ineffective offense. Unfortunately, most of the blame rests on the quarterbacks shoulders, as it should. To be fair, Kyle Bolin has made tremendous throws at times. A short TD pass to Janarion Grant, just beyond the outstretched arms of a Washington defender, was a beauty. A 48 yard TD strike to Bo Melton against Morgan State, was also a great throw. Problems is, there have been too many instances of inconsistency. Staring down the receiver and having balls picked is the most egregious problem. But overthrowing receivers, not placing the ball accurately enough so receivers can make the catch, throwing the ball into double coverage, and bad communication have also been issues. That is why the fanbase is clamoring to have the quarterback replaced. To be fair, Bolins completin percentage has been hurt by an inordinate amount of drops. Despite all his maladies, I truly believe Kyle Bolin is the best quarterback on Rutgers roster at this time. If he can cleanup his mistakes, and play well against Ohio State, it should silence the critics QB complaints for the balance of the year.

#88 Jerome Washington has been Kyle Bolins favorite target and leads the team with 15 catches and averages 9 yards per catch. Janarion Grant is second with 12 catches, followed by Dacoven Bailey, with 6, who is quietly becoming an integral part of Rutgers receiving Corp. Bailey has made at least a couple of impressive catches along the sideline. Freshmen to look out for include #18 Bo Melton, who has caught a 48 yard bomb for a TD, #82 Hunter Hayek, who had an impressive catch for a first down against Nebraska, and #14 Everett Wormley, who might be the best receiver of the bunch. These guys are going to have to play the game of their lives for Rutgers to have a chance.

Rutgers rushing attack is the led by #13 Gus "The Bus" Edwards, who leads the team with 259 rushing yards. Gus is huge, but needs to run with lower pad level, and really needs to focus on running both-south rather than east-west valley OSU, because their defense is too fast to get outside. #7 Robert Martin has NFL instincts, but is too easily brought down by single defenders. #25 Raheem Blackshear is lightening in a bottle, and needs to get more opportunities with the ball in space. It's is crucial that Rutgers run the ball as well as it can, so that it can better establish the passing attack. The numbers don't have to be great, they just have to be credible. If we can rush Gus 25 Times for 75 yards against Ohio States impressive defensive front, I'd sign up for that right now.

For the most part, Rutgers special teams have been decent, though punt coverage has been consistently awful, and that needs to get better if Rutgers is to have a chance against Ohio State.

Saturday's matchup is not David vs. Goliath. It's more like Rutgers facing a more talented team which can be beaten. Rutgers defense is ranked #24 in the country whereas Ohio States defense is ranked #57. This, despite Rutgers playing a more difficult schedule to date. Ohio States pass defense is vulnerable due to youth. If Rutgets offense can get in gear, we will have a great chance to win.

I'll say it happens Saturday night. This team is MUCH better than its 1-3 record, and Ohio State doesn't see us coming.

You say this often enough, sooner or later you are correct.

Sadly, I'll pick "later."

Further comment just not necessary.

Love Rutgersal but should have stopped after the first three words, "conditions are ripe".

It's a rebuild we are going to have to have patience again.
I catch your drift. Conditions are over-ripe.

Al's logic is so lucid that I am now convinced that this game is indeed winnable. I think he should be on BTN. And then on ESPN.

I had a dream we were playing them close in the first half. Unfortunately, my dreams always end up being the opposite of reality.

I bet you were pissed when you woke up and tried to quickly fall back asleep.

The only way Bolin takes advantage of the Ohio State secondary is if they play the way RU's secondary played against EMU, so I guess we have to hope that the Ohio State DBs are being coached not to look for the ball.

Ha, yeah, but I think it was one of those dreams that is so crazy that you know you are dreaming. Not quite lucid dreaming when you can step in and participate-I'd a put myself in as TE in that case.

Problem is Washington will be taken away and then who is going to catch the ball?

Al, put your money where your mouth is. I'll bet you any amount of money you want that OSU wins. Otherwise stop it

To be fair to Al, a sizeable portion of the ScarletNation thinks the Buckeye's DC has no idea how to defend the spread and technically, we do run the spread now.

Okay that made me lol

Has there ever been a clearer example of the fact that it is 99% recruiting and 1% coaching?

I could go out there and coach OSU today and still cover the point spread, and I know nothing about football.

It's a good thing you aren't a lawyer Al because your arguements have major flaws...you make a lengthy arguement that is supported by nearly no factual evidence just biased opinions and your closing remarks don't match up with the case you have presented

Nothing about what Kyle Bolin has done at Rutgers suggest he is capable of a performance mirroring Baker Mayfield...

Grant is a shell of his former self and outside of an atrocious FCS team we haven't seen any consistent playmakers emerge at WR or TE...

Bateky didn't record a tackle in two of four games, Turay hasn't recorded a sack yet this season but they are both playing well?

How has Deonte Roberts performed as an all Big Ten linebacker? He has 2.5 tackles for a loss (1.5 vs Morgan St)...and zero sacks (looks at Josey Jewell's stats for an all conference linebacker)

And what does their respective schedules have to do with anything in this game? Again a flawed arguement.

What you refuse to believe is unfortuantely this team still lacks enough talent to win a game like this and more unfortunate is that this is a poorly coached team that still misses too many tackles, cannot develop depth, and can't understand how to develop an easier playbook to create opportunities to get the athletes they do have in space with the ball.

You haven't used facts to show my opinion is wrong. You're simply attacking my opinion with your own opinion.

- Rutgers defense ranked higher than Ohio States defense is a FACT

- team misses too many tackles is an opinion

- Washington ranked higher than Ohio State is a FACT

- this is a poorly coached team is an opinion as is Grant is a shell of his former self

- deonte Roberts is not all big ten caliber is an opinion

Missing tackles is a fact (look at the stats)...gaining under 100 yards while being dominated in every facet of the game through the first half is both lack of talent and poor coaching...nothing you said could happen is even remotely close to happening tonight because of everything that I said...take off the scarlet classes and make an objective statement...Turay finally gets his sack, he MUST be a favorite to be all conference DE now...

There will be (sadly) similar posts to this OP before state penn and UM...[sick]

Men's basketball, for once in a long time, offers hope!!!!!

My seats are behind the visitor's bench.

I'm here to tell ya, at no time did OSU look upset about anything.

So...

Al optimism annoys me. It was scarlet lenses aka blind mentality that led Rutgers to be as bad as we currently are. Also Jon Otterstedt takes the blame too for banning anyone for years who was outspoken about how we were headed for misery in the coming future. Saying Flood was a terrible coach that got bad players to commit to him was not offensive but simply fact.

How many point would OSU score against Morgan State. 150???

C'mon peeps, Al hit the nail on the head with this post. The title is very appropriate. OSU came in, and I am very upset over what I witnessed last night.

He won't be back on this thread. He will never take accountability. That's just not his style.
He is the ultimate troll, he knows how to get fans on this board riled up and dissing their own school. He does it year after year, game after game. He starts out with something so outlandishly positive and the rest of the thread is Rutgers fans bashing their own program telling him he is a nut case and Rutgers sucks in x, y, and z. He really does know how to manipulate the fans on this board, it is a gift.
