Indiana 5 Thoughts

1) It wont show up in the scoreboard but Geo diving for loose balls not once but twice was worth more than the points it led to. Tremendous leadership, toughness and courage to get on the floor with a broken thumb. It sparked not only the crowd but team. and that dunk... MY LORD

2) Jacob Young continues to play great. Didnt have a big night on the score sheet but I think were now seeing the jacob young we should expect to continue to see moving forward. Hes learned for the most part when to pick his spots and when to speed up and when to slow down. His on ball defense and tenacity frustrates the hell out of the other team and its entertaining to watch. He needs more minutes.

3) Mulcahy isnt ready for big ten play and athletes. Hes too slow footed and not quick enough on offense. Yes he had a nice 3 and yes a nice offensive board but other than that he was a liability tonight and more nights than not hes continued to be a liability in conference play sans nebraska. Pikiell strangely played him for about 8 straight mins towards the end of the 1st half, it made zero sense. Need to get more minutes for caleb, jacob and tez over him.

4) Need to post up guys like caleb and ron more when they have a mismatch. Caleb did it once and bullied a little guard for an easy layup. There will be times when caleb has little 6’1-6’2 guards on him. We need to get him in the post in these situations. Same with myles when he has a mismatch. We didnt take advantage of mismatches as much as we shouldve.

5) Having such a long lineup and athletic guys is really messing up other teams offenses. We have the ability to switch with almost any player when a screen is set and its totally screwing up our opponents half court offenses. It’s an underrated factor that has in part led to our tremendous defensive success.

huge game sunday, win it and youre 5-2 in the B1G, unreal.

Agreed on Mulcahy. I think he's got a great game and will be huge going forward but Pike needs to start to shorten his minutes with Geo back again and Young playing well.

Kyk1827,

Totally disagree with your assessment on Mulcahy. He is getting better on defense. He is not the quickest, but he is able to hold his own and will only get better. He is still a little afraid to shoot the ball but his court awareness is really good and his choices will continue to improve.

He is only a freshman and the future is very bright for Paul, including this year.

Best of Luck,
Groz

He gets blown by way too much by guards on D for my liking. Unless hes guarding a 3 on the wing hes a liability

I would like to see Caleb have cple plays called for him a game with the right defender on him. Sometimes too unselfish. Like his mid range 15 or so footers. He can create space on his own also.

I agree on seeing more Caleb than Paul. Especially in critical moments of games.

my belief is that Pike is intentionally throwing Paul to the Fire to get him up the learning curve in case of injuries or for future. Once Paul becomes a threat on offense his game is going to open up a lot ! But agree on defense , if he gets lined up with the wrong guy it becomes a huge mismatch which teams have found. He’s working hard on D though.

Piekell is giving the kid as many minutes as he can without causing a team problem... it will make him more of an asset going forward over the next 16-17 games or more

Three point shot by Mulcahy was a thing of beauty and he is getting better. Young is also improving! Great problems to have!

Way off on Mulcahy

He is doing so many little things well. Simpleton thinking saying he's not quick enough to straight up guard some of these smaller guys. his help defense is spectacular and he brings a toughness to the team that is clearly an asset.

Keep buying his stock...

Mulcahy had 2 bad possessions/turnovers in the first half where he tried to spin a bounce pass to the post to myles and his pass went out of bounds. Also he tried to drive in the paint where 4 Indiana guys were and ended up with a walk. But he's still learning. I loved his alley oop to myles in the second half. I also loved Jacob Young's alley oop to shaq. that was a beaut!

That didn't age well...
Ooh this one's good:
Wisconsin giving the history & Maryland giving the ranking are understood somewhat but RUTGERS?? I don’t care who they got or what they done if IU loses to RUTGERS everything we believe in IU is IRRELEVANT!!! I may change my mind if they make the elite 8 or final 4 but as a BORN HOOSIER, we can’t lose to Rutgers no matter what

Great points per usual kyk. A little hard on Mulcahy but agree he doesn't need to play as long stints as he does if he's not playing very well. His over dribbling was leading to good offense earlier in some games but seems to lead to nothing lately most of the time. He did make a few big plays but at this point we neeeeeeed to find more minutes for Young. He is an elite defender and brings something on offense no one else does.

The great thing about this team is depth. Pike just needs to ride the hot hands. If it's not someone's night then give them more rest and give those minutes to whoever is on that night.

Would love to see us go into the post more. Get Myles touches early to get him involved bc sometimes he disappears. Also would. Love to see Caleb and Ron get the ball in the post more. Play bully ball with all that length.

This team is elite defensively and no one wants to play us

Good points except about Mulcahy. Your inability to see his upside undermines your credibility in accessing college basketball talent.
What did mulcahy do to help the team last night outside of the 4 and offensive rebound, I must have missed it

Agree mostly except, as others have said, about Paul. I don’t see anyone complain when he feeds the Monster. It’s almost money in the bank.

And yeah, Paul struggled a little last night in the turnover department but when he’s had 0 turnovers in games a lot of people are amazed he’s only a freshman.

So, he’s ONLY a freshman but a keeper!

Mulcahy had a bad night even with the three. But you don't give up on him. Imagine if we gave up on Young after a bad start?

I only read the first page because I'm sure the next 7 were more of the same. Typical fan bashing, just like they did and continue to do against PSU when they joined. There were more than a few though that understand adding us and MD is the reason for the additional $$$$ every team is getting. Just a few knuckleheads who still think its 1978 and IU is a world power.

Im not giving up to him. Just dont see why he should be playing for 8 minute long stretches when we have guys like caleb montez and young on the bench. Thats all

What I like about Paul is when the other team tries to double team him, he takes advantage like half the time with an awesome pass. One day, it's gonna happen much more than just half the time. Indiana did that more than a few times last night. Even if the pass wasn't as assist, it left their team completely out of position to respond to our other guys.

I didn't watch the game and think anything other than Mulcahy and his passing, has infected the other guards on the team.

I am not saying Geo and his lob wasn't beautiful to watch, but he's off balance and going in the other direction when he made that one to Myles at the rim.

I also saw as much excitement with Jacob Young finding Shaq Carter for his dunk....I was concerned that Young's oxygen levels were only tied to scoring early in the season, now he also has the passing bug in his blood stream.

It's not as if Geo or Jacob aren't good passers, but if Mulcahy can find Myles and Shaq for dunks and you have Cliff O sitting behind your bench, I am more happy to see Mulcahy on the floor.

Please keep in mind, Myles and his offense is still a work in progress and while rebounding is hard work, big guys continue to work hard when they get touches and dunks.

Mulcahy is getting valuable burn and playing time, during a winning streak or improved team play. I think if he plays without turnovers, I can live with the defense not being as strong as the rest of the roster.

I think the overall defense is very good and then comparing that to Mulcahy is a little bit different. He is getting better and is preventing post entry passes, because he's got long arms and awareness.

It's not always about stopping a player one on one. And if he shoots the ball with confidence and misses, I am fine with it, make or miss.

Mulcahy fits right in with the rest of the slow footers on this team. Harper, Mathis, Caleb, Akwasi are all prone to get beat off the dribble by quicker opponents. That is why at times it is a thing of beauty watching the effectiveness of our help man to man defense. It protects these guys and makes the overall unit very effective.

First, your criticism of Mulcahy went way beyond last night, which was admittedly not his best game. You said: "Mulcahy isn't ready for big ten play and athletes. He's too slow footed and not quick enough on offense." That is just not true. There is a reason why Geo, who practices and plays with Paul everyday, says he will ultimately be a Rutgers legend and why Pike praises Paul's defense that you claim is too slow.

As for last night, Paul hit a clutch 3 when the team was struggling to score (he needs to shoot more as he's 42% from 3 and 58% from 2). He also had a nice dish to Myles and would have had a couple more assists, but for a foul and a missed layup. His TOs last night were uncharacteristic, as he has an excellent assist to TO ratio especially for a true freshman. He also had a nice block on IU's big man and a clutch offensive rebound.

so again, I said he's not ready for big ten athletes yet. He's a freshman, he'll get better. He did not have a good game last night. He was a liability. He was dribbling around way too much. He was getting caught in the air. He simply had a bad game. And he's been having bad games against good competition. S&C will do wonders for him because at the moment right now he is simply just not athletic enough to contribute at the level needed. That's not to say he shouldn't play at all, however there is no reason why he should ever play for more than a 4 minute stretch to simply give someone a breather.

I think he was a little winded there. I think he brings a lot of intangibles that don’t show up on the scoresheet. It’s important he plays a lot imo. That was a long stretch though. He’s going to be a really really good player as he matures and gets stronger.

well what do you consider "alot" because at this point I really don't see a reason why he should play more than 12-14 mins a night.

Apparently you missed Paul's 31 minutes in the Penn State game.

Apparently you missed Paul's 31 minutes in the Penn State game.

and his 5 assists and 0 turnovers
or his 3 assists and 0 turnover vs Michigan St
or his 3 assists and 1 TO vs Nebraska.

Sure, he's not ready for BIG10 play. What a ridiculous take.

PM has the best assist/TO ratio on the team, his help defense is excellent, is tough down low and is a good rebounder. He is a big guard that gets beat with quicker guards sometimes. Happens to most big guards.

I'll take PM on my team any day of the week.
