Interesting/odd things you have seen at Rutgers stadium

The Scarlettes.

Not the current program for junior cheerleaders. The T&A version 1979-198? They basically just jiggled in glittery Danskin outfits.

Wearing white boots, scarlet leotards and white skirts, the 21-member squad made its debut at the November 17, 1979 Rutgers-Villanova game.

The Scarlettes won third place as best (non-musical) marching unit at the New Brunswick Tercentennial Parade… and they performed in January, 1980 along with a band at North Brunswick’s Royal Manor North. They also performed at New Jersey Nets and New York Jets games.

My top four oddest/interesting things, not in any particular order:

1. Back when I was in school, watching a male Rutgers student enter the Porto potty
and his "friends" tipping it over. Sewage pouring out the vent and the guy inside exited, covered with all kinds of stuff.
2. As told from my buddy who went to the snowy, West Virginia game (I was smart enough to stay home). He tailgated in a blizzard with his two young sons under a tarp in the Blue Lot.
3. The Heat stroke game where we couldnt bring bottled water in and many if not all of the limited amounts of water fountains were either not working or blocked by mobile concession stands. Folks were dropping like flies all around the stadium.
4. Last and certainly not least, about three or four years ago, seeing two very cute female coeds deeply making out a couple of rows in front of us. To this day, I can't
even recall if football was being contested on the field during this soft porn
scene.

In old Rutgers stadium, the spring practice ended with a game between the current Rutgers football team players versus alumni RU players from the past. The alumni team won !

I haven't read through the thread, but I bet someone else remembered this ...

When I was in school, I worked as a yellow jacket security at the football and basketball games. This would have been the mid-90s. One game (it was Boston College), my buddy and I were working on the field behind the Rutgers bench when two guys jumped the railing. They were completely naked except one was wearing a Beavis mask and one was wearing a Butthead mask. It was a bad rainstorm the whole day and as soon as Butthead got over the railing, we grabbed him and all three of us immediately slipped and fell on the ground in the mud. Butthead was so drunk that he couldn't stand up. Beavis started running and made it to mid-field where he got tackled by a bunch of security. About 20 of us carried these two naked guys out of the stadium by their arms and legs. The whole time, they were ranting about how they were going to be on ESPN.

Remember when Rutgers Stadium was Home to a pro soccer team with a world famous coach—New Jersey Americans of the American Soccer League, coaches by Eddie Firmani.
One of the stories I heard on the '94 rebuild is that it was done that way (all the extra room behind the North endzone) so World Cup/international level games could be played here.

The current Rutgers football field has actually been shifted 25 feet to the west of where the original 1938 field was to accommodate national soccer matches. The new Rutgers Stadium is mostly built over the old. No visible part of the original stadium remains.

During the early to mid 90s, it became tradition that the Cluck U chicken would be on the sideline for the homecoming game. At one game, the Pitt Panther was beating up the scarlet knight mascot. The Cluck U chicken came to the rescue to beat the Pitt Panther's a$$ while the scarlet knight watched. It was kind of embarrassing. We needed the Cluck U chicken to save the day.........

It definitely happened. Remember my dad telling the story. He was chaperoning a group and witnessed the emergency response.

I remember a guy cheering and falling out of the lower seats level at giants stadium. Don’t remmber which game but it was Rutgers, maybe Penn St. IDK what happened to him but it didn’t look good

Yes ! Rich scanlon . He went to Bergen Catholic. Big time steroid guy. It was no secret and you saw it on display that day.
Scanlon the roid rager
If that was the wind game I remember watching the Syracuse coach during the postgame press conference. He looked shell shocked and just kept mumbling on about the wind.

Tried to find it on youtube but no luck.

While we are talking stadium….

Not for nothing but the River Road “presentation” of the Stadium needs to buffed up in a serious way. It’s looking old and tired.

While I agree, (and I could be wrong) I don't think it's finished yet. Maybe they are waiting for a little more B1G scratch before there is some permanence to that spot.

Hard for me to believe this would escape Greg’s “first impressions” view.

The exterior is pretty close to the drawings iirc. I believe all that end of Shi is missing are the entrance behind 131 and the locker rooms.

Not really as there were supposed to be two towers on both side of the new end. Don't recall how close to River Road (probably not that close), but they were big enough where I believe you would have been able to get to the Upper Deck via stairs or an elevator.

If they were built my 91yr old Dad might still be coming to the games with me and my friend. :(

Two things come to mind.
1. A guy in front of me pumping beers out of quarter leg in the stands in front of me about 8 years ago.
2. A smoking hot student pulling her Jean shorts down revealing her red thong and RU painted on each cheek. Then her Aunt walking up from a about a dozen rows In front of her and admonishing her. They booed the aunt hard.

I think the aunt trying to restore decency is funny as hell! I wonder how that story ages over each Thanksgiving dinner! 😂

I also remember LJ Smith's uncle or whatever constantly yelling "Get the ball to LJ!" Back in those days there were maybe 20 or so people scattered in each section so half the stadium probably heard him.

On a similar note from back in the day, did the PA announcer admonish ONE person for having an umbrella up? I can't decide if I actually remember that or if it was urban legend from these boards.

The 'umbrella situation' was the infamous 'Temple in the rain game' back in '02. My friends and I left near the end of the 3rd quarter (we were soaked and woefully unprepared for the weather) but in I think the 2nd quarter someone in 105 had an umbrella up and the PA announcer said, 'Please close your umbrella', then said 'thank you' once the person actually did so. There had to be maybe 8-10k there that game and I remember that clear as day.

-A student who was under the influence at the '98 Tulane game shouting, "that's it; I can't take this anymore. He needs to know where he's at", and running onto the field and tackling the Tulane mascot...then getting buried by about 6 Middlesex County Sheriff's Officers.

-2 Pop Warner teams pelting the Temple Owl with pretzels to the point where he had to move in 2000.
Also, 'Tee Guy' at the '01 Pitt game.

Yep.

That really happened. My Dad and I were able to move over that way because of the weather and lack of people.

By the time my friends and I left in the 3rd quarter there had to be maybe 7k tops left in the Stadium. That game and the Pitt '01 game had to be among the lowest-attended games I can remember being at (I didn't attend any home games during the '18 or '19 seasons).

The thing my family remembers most about the game is the cold my Dad caught from the game. My Sister and Mom were so mad at ME because we didn’t leave…

“You could‘ve killed him!”

LOL

If I recall correctly it was November, 40-something degrees and raining somewhat mildly at the start of the game, then picking up steadily as the game progressed. My group was in sweatshirts and jeans and by halftime we were pretty much soaked and cold...you guys definitely made it further than we did. I did make it to the 4th quarter of the '16 PSU game which may have been even more miserable in terms of weather.
