Is this how the demise of non-playoff bowls begins?

No. First does anyone really care about the HYUNDAI Bowl or Buffalo Wild Wings Bowls to begin with??
There are too many bowls but ESPN makes money on it. So as long as they aren't losing money nothing changes.
I laugh at the anger of some on here against these players. They are placing so much unwarranted importance on bowl games that most won't even watch. They aren't even New Year's Day games!

I don't think this will develop into a significant trend. There aren't that many players each year who can be confident that they can sit out their bowl game and expect to remain a high first round draft pick. Most players will be trying to use their bowl game performance as an opportunity to improve their draft status. And a good number of the elite players who expect to be early draft picks will be in major bowls, and probably won't pass them up.

Yeah, because those are pretty good bowls.

I mostly agree with the rest, though.

They need to find a way to add some juice back to the bowl season.

maybe some mini-consolation playoffs can help.

For the conference championship teams they either get into a big time bowl or other good bowl.

For non-conference champs, especially the 6-6 and 5-7 teams have them play the week of the Army Navy game with the winners matched up in bowls.

Matchup NC St (6-6) @ Memphis (8-4)
and
Maryland (6-6) @ Toledo (9-4)
with the winners matching up in a Xmas week bowl game
if it makes sense have the 1st round games in neutral sites like Detroit, Minnesota, Indianapolis, Atlanta, New orleans, etc... for double headers

Looking at the attendance figures for the bowls held thus far, it would seem that ESPiN is the only one making money off of them. It would be interesting to see how much money the participating schools are losing for bowls where the payouts are so pathetically low. If anything kills the bowl system it will be ESPiN's greed.

We went over this the last time you made some oddball tournament-style bowl suggestion: No.

Schools are LOSING money on this. And it isn't just ESPN who makes money on this, but the bowl organizers too under the auspices of being a non-profit.

Schools just chalk it up to being a 3 hour commercial for the school. That is what they are paying for.

Just sayin'

The non-playoff bowls should concentrate on dropping the auto-tie ins and just find good match-ups. The Continental Tire-Belk-whatever-it-is-now Bowl used to do a good job of matching a local college (that brought in the majority of the crowd) with an interesting outside opponent that created decent TV ratings.

These bowl games should be along the lines of an intriguing "13th game" on the schedule. As "post-season championships" they are almost meaningless.

They should limit the bowls so that it becomes a special event that a player would have to be crazy to not want to participate in, not an exhibition like the Pro Bowl or some stupid scrimmage which they basically are now.

Rose Bowl
Orange Bowl
Sugar
Cotton
Peach
Citrus
Sun Bowl
Fiesta
Liberty Bowl
Independence Bowl
Cactus Bowl
Tangerine Bowl
Alamo Bowl

The 2 playoff games get chosen by the comittee and then the bowls choose in this order the teams they want. That way the top 25 teams (26) get to play. Make them earn it.
