Jay Young to Fairfield (confirmed)

Really intriguing candidate from Aaron Breitman's article: Andre LaFleur, most recently of UNLV. He's a Jim Calhoun guy like Pike, and he was Joel Ntambwe's lead recruiter.

why would pikiell just not promote shoes? Also who is jay taking with him? Dougher?

I was actually kind of surprised Shoes stayed on staff after Corey Sanders left. I know the two of them were very close and I kind of figured that Pikiell kept Shoes as the only holdover from the Jordan era as a gesture to keep Corey from transferring. Don't know how true that is, obviously, but that was my theory.

As a parent of a Fairfield student, I welcome Jay with open arms.
Maybe I will even go to a game up there next year.

That said, tough job. They had a competitive team in '17-'18 when they were lead by a 4 year starter guard. Fairfield does not have the basketball tradition of Iona or Siena in the MAAC. Best of luck to Jayin upgrading the program.

As Carino points out in his article today, it’s probable that Jay Young bring some of the current basketball staff with him as assistant coaches such as Dougher and guys like that.

Ed Cooley got the Providence job from there. So it could be a stepping stone.

I know people say Jay was the defensive coordinator and what not but how big of a loss can this really be? We play man defense on every possession are we really gonna miss his coach telling our guys to play man defense?

It's not easy and it takes a certain person to motivate players effectively.

That being said, I am sure Pikiell will bring in someone that does a great job. I wish the best to Jay Young.

Ejg,
As long is it is OK with Coach Pike, couldn't Boyle continue to have his own camps ? With The RAC plus the new practice center opening soon, we should have the room.

Is that allowed per NCAA rules?

Wasn’t Jay Young our big man coach? Since the MAAC has very few big men who can play, this may be a nice pick for Fairfield.

Who will be our big man coach next season?

Ejg,
You would think the NCAA would prefer assistant coaches take money from nine-year olds and their families than getting it from Nike

I'm really happy for Young. I wish him well. This is well deserved for him. I hate seeing him leave, but I take this as a positive, because we have a HC that has high BB IQ assistants with integrity, who other schools want to have as their HC. Good luck Jay.

As a replacement, how about Michigan State’s Recruiting Coordinator (and a former head coach) Doug Wojcik or Ohio State’s Director of Recruiting & Player Development, Scoonie Penn? Either one would be a real asset recruiting the Big Ten geographic footprint.

It's not his game day coaching that will be the big loss
Fair point. Apparently he was great with bigs. We havent really had any dominant bigs though, so we’ll see where we go from here

Got a good laugh out of this one. Hey coach, what are we doing on D? "Everybody take a man." Priceless.

Good for Jay, I wish him all the success in the world.
His getting Fairfield's HC position probably will make it easier for Pike to have up and coming assistant coaches willing to come to Rutgers in an effort to prove themselves and advance their career.

Having coaches hired away before even having a winning season let alone making the NCAA tournament, hurts

I was of the thought process that Young was the best coach on the RU staff. Look at where our production came from the past two years-defense and rebounding. Who was responsible for that? It’s a team effort, but RU broke up practices to positions.

I’m a Fairfield alum. They’ve had some success over the years but could never get over the hump. They haven’t made the tourney since 1996 and lost in the MAAC finals 6 times since.
I’ve told the Fairfield money raising people when they make the dance, I’ll donate... until then stop asking.

I’m happy a Rutgers guy is going to Fairfield. I hope he succeeds.

Not for a team that has great difficulty scoring 65 points and has no consistent go to scorer.
We actually averaged 68/ppg. We only scored under 65 in 11 games, and had a 5-6 won loss record in those games.

Also, you're a terrible poster.

Our offensive efficiency in the Big Ten was 12th.

Our defensive efficiency in the Big Ten was... also 12th.

Our offense was actually closer to average. The Big Ten as a whole allowed 1.02 points per possession. Our offense was at .987 (-0.033 off average) while our defense allowed 1.067 (-0.047 off average).

Point is, we do need help all over.

Agreed, but I do think it's also possible for some people to respond to a thread about our now vacant assistant coaching position without saying "ignore that, we just need shooters." That's a different thread!
