Laviano can profit from time on the bench!

I don't think it's likely that Laviano's the best QB in the conference, regardless of the stats. But I'm curious. Who do you think is better, what metrics are you using to determine who #1 should be, and what objective proof are you offering to make your case?
Try using the eye test! You might be able to make the case that he is the most efficient due to his safe underneath throws but that's about it.

Read and processed the opinions pro and con. Know that sitting Laviano creates a risk to his confidence and morale. But I believe that the circumstances now dictate a change be made in the only move the coaches can make for an immediate impact on the field.

Whether Rettig can change the course of this season none can really predict. But we are at the adult table now and are at a crucial crossroads in our schedule. We need to play to win and making the change at QB is the only viable move we can make to create the perception as well as the reality that Rutgers is playing to win.

If Rettig pans out then we move forward to a relatively successful season, the possibility of a bowl and a solid base for next year. If the move is not fruitful, and if Laviano is truly a gamer, he comes back with the added benefit of watching the game from the bench.
Your 8 post To Troll or not a Troll....????..... yea U is a Troll
But one of the dumbest post of the month

The fact that you are even considering the point seriously calls in to question your knowledge of football! Do you actually think there is a possibility of Laviano being better than Cook, Cardale, or JT?
The fact that you posted what you just posted, above, seriously calls into question your reading comprehension. Where did I say Laviano is better than Cook or the others?

Once again, not sure what you're responding to. But it's apparently not any of my posts. I'm not claiming to know who the best QB is in the Big Ten.

As for the so-called eye test, what expertise to you bring to bear that makes your eye qualified to judge who the best QB is in the Big Ten based on what you see on TV? You're a former college FB coach? You played QB in college? What?

Lol. You are so off. Last year OSU almost lost to PSU because Meyer refused to bring Cadale in when the starter was obviously hurt and could barely run. Meyer played those guys when he had no choice. Also, I don't seem to remember Laviano's 6 interception game which is kind of relevant since the thread is about him
My point of mentioning Nova's 6 interceptions is one of which our great Coach Flood continues to play 1 quarterback the entire year no matter how the starter is playing! (Ie. Chas Dodd sitting on the bench all of 2012!) QB's have bad games and should not be above other players when it comes to mistakes! CL had a good game against Michigan State until the last series. He could and should have avoided the sack, and why spike the ball after a first down? Rettig is a 4 star recruit who is being wasted on the sidelines!

I forgot it's all about the the stars! Someone call Iowa and get Savon back here ASAP

All I ask is the kid gets a chance! There was a razor thin difference between CL and HR, and the kid sees only 1 meaningless 1st half against Norfolk State! (played great and even had a touchdown saving tackle when the score was out of hand)!

I liked the selection of Lav as the starter and his stats have been good. However he has made more mistakes than I would like and our first half scoring against WSU and the whole game at PSU are pause for concern. Lav has earned the first team and I am not ready for a change, but I do wonder could we get similar production with Rettig with less mistakes? The problem with Flood is he does not have a qb hook, only a cart, so we may never know. Rettig should have played at some point at PSU. I want RU to score a lot of points against Indiana and win the game. If this does not happen then the qb conversation becomes legitimate.

In 2013 Flood benched Nova for Dodd, who was not any better.

With no axe to grind or agenda, Laviano has played well and has earned the starting job.

Rettig had a fair shot at th job and now needs wait for an opportunity!

It is clear that Cook is way ahead of Laviano...and he is a Srvwith tins of experience and a first round draft pick. But take away those 2 WR's who made amazing catches Saturday evening and how would he gave looked? Pretty damn shitty.
So, why do we have to take Carroo away from Laviano?
Take Rice away from Montana and you have Kansas City...what's your point?

In today's home new tribrune interview flood was asked has he concidered
going to Rettig at any time or in the futrure, his emphatic answer was, not
at all at any time. "I'm very pleased with Laviano and his steady improvement"
This guy has made up his mind. If Rettig had shown any weakness in his
first 1/2 game I might understand. But he look real good. I feel for him.

FYI Laviano was a ESPN 4 STAR QB out of HS. So we are not wasting Rettig as he is a good back up to a 4 star QB who is starting
BTW all football players become a 1STAR once they walk onto a college football filed and then your EARN your stars and starts

A good backup QB should be getting at least some 2nd half series and playing minutes to maintain their readiness to step up as as starter in games that are "out of reach" one way or another, including Kansas and Penn State. Not one poster has offered an acceptable reason why this has not occurred.
One could also argue that they can be inserted for a series after a crucial mistake by the starting QB, such as Laviano's lost fumble in the game vs. Washington State.

Maybe you miss something is your thesis of playing second stringers.
Yes play them when you can
BUT our starting QB has a total of 4 games under his belt When Laviano is playing like Cook with experience AND you have a insurmountable lead called garbage time then the 2nd string QB get time.
DEVELOP your staring QB before propping up a second stringer
Where were you a head coach BTW, bazzaro land?

I disagree that playing the starting quarterback during "garbage time" (after at least three quarters during which they and the rest of the team clearly did not play well enough to even keep the game within reach) will contribute to their continuing development. And god forbid the starting quarterback gets injured, suspended again, etc., the backup should have at least gotten some meaningful game minutes (practice doesn't count) to be more prepared to come in and play well. This had been a recurring problem under Schiano, and now the same with Flood.

FYI, I was never and will never be a head coach, but am merely offering a logical opinion on the matter. I also believe that Laviano played more than well enough this past Saturday night to keep his starting role, but doesn't mean he earned a season-long benefit of the doubt.

This is not a Schiano/Flood issue it is universal issue with all HC and second string players.
Unless the game is WON rarely do you see second stringers be it in the backfield or on the line.
Example; lets put in the second string center..... you can imagine what the press would do if there is a fumble and the game is lost. It just never happens. And by the way playing in garbage time is not that educational. Practice can be so much more intense and more educational.

Then what is the reason for continuing to play the first stringers vs. PSU in the 4th quarter, when the game was clearly lost? And Kansas, though it was uglier than it should have been, was IMO the WIN you are describing during this season thus far.

And if playing in garbage time is arguably not that educational or beneficial, then why continue playing the starters and risking injury to them? I remember Schiano keeping Mike Teel in for too long when RU hammered Norfolk State in the third game of 2007, leading to his injured thumb and arguably underperforming 8-5 season for a team with many future NFL players.

Chris Laviano was a 3 star QB (Rivals.com) in high school! But it does not matter. He is not a bad qb. I just think Rettig has more upside potential. I predict he will transfer again after this season.

I believe Scout had him as a 2 Star
Rivals had him as a 3 star
And ESPN had him as a 4 star.
And right now that is about as accurate as this star system can be, that is to say a players is anything from a 2 star to a 4 star.
The true fact every one is a 1 star the minute they walk on to a college field you must earn any stars

Cook's backup has not thrown a pass this year. Dantonio must be a bad coach.

Send Laviano to the 150-pound team. And while you're at it, bench Carroo as well for catching the ball too much.
