Laviano currently rated #4 qb in Big Ten

You mean "rated #4 in passing efficiency". He's also rated #10 in total offense (yards per game).

I am shocked to see that Laviano is 4th in the conference in yards per attempt at 7.7, just ahead of Beathard (Iowa, 7.6) and Hackenberg (7.6). But if we take out Norfolk State and only consider FBS opponents, that number drops to 7.1, which would be 9th.

Indiana Laviano played well. We need that guy on Saturday, not Wisconsin or Ohio State Laviano.

His ranking is meaningless, i'll take a guy that goes 3 for 30 as long as those 3 are in the end zone over CL. He seems to be getting worse as the season progresses because teams are stacking the box. When we run on 1st and 2nd down with no success he has 3rd and long and our success in 3rd and long is horrible.

He is Nova reincarnated....except he is always "the bad Nova". The guy has fumbled the snap from center on at least 5 occasions that I've seen. And he throws off his back foot and his arm isn't strong enough for him to be doing that. Rettig's time is long over due but Flood is apparently "loyal to a fault". Regime change is in order.

I wonder if the OP has a poster of Betty White on his bedroom ceiling.

I think Nova had much better physical talents than CL. Nova's problem is that he couldn't read the numbers on the Salmon jerseys and kept throwing to the wrong team.

I'm fine with that as long as you take out the numbers for the other qbs when they played their non-D1A opponent.
BTW, I didn't say he was the fourth best qb in the league or that he should remain the starter for RU. I merely pointed out that he was ranked #4 by that ESPN site. Make of that info what you will.
Some of you are so funny.

I was far from a Nova fan and his repeated mindless over-the-line passes and other head-scratching plays were awful. But he was a much better passer than Laviano though, again, I don't think Nova all around was a particularly good QB.

Are you giving Laviano or Rettig credit for game 1 win?

Since the team scored enough points to beat Norfolk State in each quarterback's respective half of play, then credit for that win can go to both.

I actually think Laviano can be very good if he gets protection. The noodle arm thing is overplayed. Thats not to say that i disagree that putting in Rettig could provide a needed spark. But we are being way too critical of a kid that is starting his first year and making completions within the time the OL is giving him.

That being said, there has to be other ways our offense could slow down the rush. read option, etc.

Then who cares?

" The noodle arm thing is overplayed."

It really isn't. His passes long than 15 yards float in the air.

He is better with plenty of time but he needs to lean into every throw as if he's giving everything he's got instead of throwing it like he's got a solid arm.

Things could be much better

You are so funny for starting this nonsense thread.

Sudfeld without So Illinois: 1700 yards, 194 attempts: 8.8 ypa = still best in B1G (overall is 9.1)
Cardale Jones - no FCS opponents, so still 8.3
Connor Cook: no FCS = 8.2
Beathard (Iowa) without Illinois State: 1387 yards on 186 attempts = 7.5 ypa (overall is 7.6)
Hackenberg - no FCS, 7.6
Stave (Wisconsin) - no FCS, 7.4
Armstrong (Nebraska) - no FCS, 7.2
Laviano - without Norfolk State, 7.1 (overall 7.7)
Leidner, Minnesota: no FCS, stays 6.7
Rudock, Michigan - no FCS, stays at 6.7
Lunt, Illinois: take away W. Illinois, 5.7 ypa (overall 5.9)
Hills, Maryland, without Richmond: 600 yards on 107 = 5.6 ypa; he throws a lot of INTs, too
Blough, Purdue: only threw one incomplete pass against Indiana State. Avg = 5.7 without that.
Thorson, NW: take away E Illinois = 5.2 ypa

Laviano is 8th in the conference against FBS opponents in YPA - not including Barrett, who is at 7.6 ypa. Middle of the pack.

This is a play calling (i.e. coaching problem) not a Laviano problem. Very few QBs can be successful with the play calling described above.

Agree. Laviano for a soph with a handful of starts has shown ability and potential. He had a bad two last games, but looked good in most of the others. Got to let it play out. Rettig is not the answer.

No offense but how can you say Rettig isn't the answer when you haven't seen him have a chance?

Take away Carroo's numbers this year and what would Laviano's stats look like? Meanwhile Rettig has never had a chance to throw to Carroo.

But, of course, he's not the answer lol

We should have been platooning qbs all season to see which one, if any, emerged as better in game time conditions. This also has an advantage for an offense: opponents have to prepare for 2 different qbs. But it's not the rutgers way to try to confuse or deceive opponents. For some completely inexplicable reason a program with a long history of weak recruiting thinks it can run an offense where it's just going to outplay and manhandle opposing defenses.

Teams are going to take away the short underneath routes like Wisconsin did. Laviano is going to have to throw those mid range out routes which requires zip on the ball. Let's see if coaches call those plays and if Laviano can execute.

Umm. Defenses don't have to prepare for Laviano. He is not a threat handing off on 1st and 2nd down.

Don't you think that you need to let a young quarterback develop? That means he's going to have some ups and downs. You have to let him develop a feel for the game and his receivers. It's part of the learning curve. Jerking him and Rettig in and out of the lineup is not how to develop the team.
