Let’s face reality - we are a basketball school for now

Fine by me. Rutgers football is in a hopeless position to ever win in the big 10. Pike is gonna make is a winner though. Hoops is where the buzz should be

This program is trending up up up. We’re gonna take our lumps and struggle here and there, but it’s refreshing to believe in a coach and a program.

Sadly, can’t say the same for what Rob Ash is doing on the football side.

Save the Ash money and use it to extend Pike if other schools come calling with $. Preserve him at all costs!

The announcers said it best I think - Year 1 we didn't look like we belonged on the same court as Miami. Year 3 and we play a tough game on the road and come out with the win. Incredible

time to stop caring so much about Chris Ash, and be thankful that we have a real coach in Pike! Huge road win tonight against Miami.

Hobbs at least got this hire right.
Fact. It’s time to embrace that we should focus on basketball and be a basketball school.

This was such a huge win for the program. These guys deserved the win. They have bought in to what Pikiell and our staff are telling them. I feel so happy for the entire team, staff and those of us who have been long suffering fans for so long.

Road wins against P5 programs are not easy....add in that it a BIG 10-ACC challenge game....HUGE win.

Winning on the road against a quality opponent is a positive sign that has been missing in previous seasons.Hopefully, the team will use this game as a building block as the B1G games begin on Friday.

Pike gets it and understands what it takes to win! As Pike said, in year 1 of his tenure, he had 2 starters - now he has 8. Next year he will have 10 (Mulcahy; Young and open schoialrship less Doorson). Invest in RU BB Stock!

Pleasure to watch a game where the offense wasn't clicking but we have enough talent to score some points. Hasn't been that way in a while.

Kiss was 5-10 from the field. only player to shoot 50%. Him and mathis played much better this game. both still need to cut down on the TO's but much improved tonight.

Need a strong effort against MSU to show the doubters this win wasn't a fluke. I liked how they didn't panic when Miami took the lead in the second half..

Twist my arm and I’ll admit I’m a hoops first guy but I love the football team as well. I’ve been through so many bad and good years of both. Some years more enjoyable then others but I’ll never give up my tickets or my faith / loyalty and /or enjoyment! Go RU!

That's what a good coach comes in and does. Compare that to Year 3 of Ash.

Great win despite Rutgers not playing its best game. But as Pike has said , defense wins your game and offense by how much. And our defense was tough throughout and our offense was good enough to win by three. Gotta love Shaq Doorsen and feel really good about the kid. His boxout at the end which led to his free throw was big. Really big. What's impressive is that Rutgers won the game without any one player having a stellar game but with so many contributing at various points in the game.

Let's stop comparing Ash and Pike on this board Pike doesn't deserve to be compared at any level with him on this board. Bring the comparisons over to the football board where Ash can be put in his place. Here, we talk basketball and RU sports with pride.

Basketball is expected to take over football in popularity nationwide in the next decade anyways. This could be the right path for Rutgers and Hobbs

Think we have always been more of a basketball school. Football success has been episodic. Back in the Old Days, Princeton used to beat RU regularly, and RU was one of the Middle Three, along with Lehigh and Lafayette. We had a good team when Bill Austin of Scotch Plains was here, and then indifferent results for many years. Many, many years. The polysyllabic backfield (Van Ness just died) did well, but the team subsided again. Some success under GS, mostly beating up on setups or teams in aperiodic decline, like Army and Navy back then.

But basketball is the eastern urban sport--and we have had more overall success there. Our final four run in 1976; inept coaching selections by athletic departments that believed foo'ball was their primary focus harmed us after that. Was Jimmy V ever asked? Or Dickie V? Nah, their salary demands would steal money from the ever-building football program. And bad luck intervened. Kevin Bannon and Mike Rice were good hires done in by questionable behavior. Though the doc, Last Days of Knight will show a side of Bob Knight that makes Mike Rice look like an altar boy. We had one keeper and we fired him because he was older, from the Midwest and focused too much on character. Mulcahy ran him out of town in favor of an aging former SHU assistant who had interviewed for numerous HC jobs at somewhat lesser schools and was found wanting. Which led to the program being in shambles when Pikiell was hired.

Watched that Miami game on TV tonight. Miami led 13-4 at one point, with the ball. But RU went on a run to take the lead. The announcers noted, the run came when RU had Geo and Eugene and three freshmen in the game. The game was close all the way, and Rutgers, though not shooting well, won. They interviewed Coach Pikiell after the game, and he stressed the effort on defense. Defense and effort travels, he noted. You shoot well some games; badly some games. But defense and effort always plays. He praised Mathis and Harper for their defense. RU was a 12 point underdog against Miami, which has some players, but is not deep,
and shook off road jitters. Think it is time to realize we are never going to win consistently in football in the B1G, but we can win in basketball. That game was on ESPNU, part of the ACC-B1G challenge, and should make some staff targets look at things just a little differently. Like maybe how players get better with that staff.

Better days ahead as Mulcahy comes on board next year, and who knows who else we can add for 2020? RU found the right coach. Right temperament; a grinder; good assistants looking ahead to HC slots if the team does well. This team will have growing pains--so many new guys--but the trajectory is up.
