“He’s well into his rehab,” Pikiell said. “He’s a worker, so I feel really good and think that we’ll have him back doing stuff, not full-time, but hopefully August, September-ish. He won’t be cleared to play by that time, but hopefully he’ll be able to run up and down and shoot.”

Per carino article

If he's running up and down shooting in August/September then it seems like he should be ready to start the season or early season barring setbacks

Good news

Expectation? Pike said that Mag's a hard worker and went on to mention something that will "hopefully" happen. Hope springs eternal post-surgery.
It means the surgery was successful. It's an early timetable but better than hearing something like the damage was worse than originally expected and he has a long road ahead etc

Sure, it suggests that the surgery was successful--something we hear all the time after surgery. Now, if the announcement was that the surgery was not successful, that would be news.

And he does have a long road ahead. He tore his ACL on February 4. Recovery can be anywhere from six to nine months and can even take a year. And then Mag can start practicing and getting ready. Here's hoping it will be toward the earlier part of that timeline, just like Pike is hoping.

If this was a straight ACL repair and there were no complications, there really isn't any reason why he won't be ready for the start of the season. May want to ease in, but 6-8 months is totally feasible for full recovery.

Just bc surgeries are typically successful doesn't mean it's a guarantee

Full year timetable is outdated

Sounded like good news to me.

Jahvon Quinerly tore his ACL 2 days after we lost to Notre Dame last year, so mid march. Pretty sure he played most of the season this year.

its a lot closer to 9 months than 12

He played 35 games this year

Not sure why so many people think it takes a full year to return. He might not get full explosion back immediately, but he's more likely ready to start the season or soon after then take a full year

There are degrees of severity in all ACL's. Reggie Sutton on the football team had a really bad one and as soon as the surgery was over they knew the timeline would be 1+ years.
So, if Pikiell is mentioning August/September it is good bet it was not a very severe injury and the doctor gave him those dates. But, maybe Willis knows better... lol 😂

When people say the surgery was successful, it means the doctor got paid.

The return to full activity depends on each individual's response to the surgery, healing process and rehabilitation. Too soon of a return could pose greater chance of a repeat injury. Same process of return to play after a concussion. It is tailored for each individual athlete's physical readiness and safety, not some standardized timetable or the desires of coaches or the fanbase.

Obviously. There are still typical timelines for how long it takes athletes with similar injuries... and it's not typically a year... and it doesn't sound like it will be for Mag either based on this early timetable

Or he’s being argumentative or has a half-empty glass perspective. We should all keep in mind that Pike didn’t have to say anything or could have just said that we have to wait and see.

You can’t compare a 320 pound individual who very likely put on even more weight during his rehab to lean basketball player.

What does his weight have to do with the severity of the initial ACL damage and injury?

Sutton was injured 9/22/21. He missed about 2 full seasons. That's a very very severe ACL injury and his weight has very little to do with how long he has been out. If he was 220 pounds he still would have missed 2 years with a injury that severe.

ACL rehab generally takes 9 months. Depends on how well he does. The most important aspect is typically quadriceps strength and power which can take a while to get back. Protocols want 90% compared to unaffected side for return to play.

BTW the best predictor for retearing is time since surgery. So the later the better. Best guess is he's back around late Oct/Nov, but there are many factors obviously.

I'm a PT.
