Reading the Tommy Amaker thread, I was wondering when the make or break year is for Eddie? I'm not really seeing it until year 5 to be honest. This year could be the low point because we're feeling the pain of Rice getting fired so late and not hiring Jordan, and the talent that chose to stay has now graduated.

The team is young and no one is expecting anything this year. But what about next?

Is there even any external pressure on Eddie? Is football a distraction? or is this year truly a learning year with it being the first team that is truly Jordan's?

Take the temperature of the program Feb 1, 2017..... and hope it is OK.

Look at Eddie's age, when $ comes from B1G, and hoping FB turns around. The hope is Eddie can be the bridge to the point where we are in a better financial position to make a hire. Doing this in a year, or 2, or perhaps 3 just doesn't seem wise and probably is a stop gap that gets undone in 2021 or 2022.

I am not an Eddie fan. However looking at the big picture it is in our best interest to do everything we can to have him as our coach for a bit.

the big tie breaker in all of this is he appears to be a good guy and treats the players with the respect they deserve. Sometimes too much

For all his faults, there was a lot to like about a coach like Mike Rice. You would not see his teams getting away w/ some of the crap that Eddie's do. Obviously MR dialed the intensity level up way too high, but on the other end of the spectrum, EJ still acts like he is coaching NBA players who have already gone through all the growing pains. Just wish we could see a happy medium.

Eddies contract is in year 3 of 5 right? that's extension time..ugh, Batts gave Wilard a sweet deal and I expect him to extend Eddie two more years so he gets 7 even though there zero evidence this will get turned around...ala Fred Hill and Uncle Bob..but even then at least you could point to Hills recruiting as a possibility things would turn around. In this case not so much. Freeman will be gone after next year. We are not making the tourney in the next two years after this one. Sanders senior year if he is still here is the first opportunity at making the dance so hes going to need a lot of help but where are the recruits

I really see more than most of you so I expect to get shouted down on this, but I think we are progressing

Next year is a big year for Eddie. This year is about growth and getting experience. Most of the players return.

Next year sets up as a year that wins must be better than losses

11-21 should then into 16-16 next year if Eddie is the coach I think he is

without more recruits its going to go nowhere, yes 500 is reasonable next year but Freeman will be gone after that, who is coming in. I worry that Sanders will not stay here.

Extension?.... um....No

We have no recruiting class to speak of

I agree ...16-17 is THE season that will decide if he gets an extension. Only way it's sooner is if he kills it with a great class signing in November, 2016. That seems a longshot after last month's failure.

This is not the make or break year for EJ; next year is. The present team is ridiculously inexperienced, not only on an individual basis but in terms of playing together as a unit. The team is clearly in learning mode. Since mid-summer, I have unwaveringly predicted, if only to myself, a 9 win season for 2015-2016, and it's conceivable we might bot even hit that number. IF and only if we can retain the key players (obviously, Sanders most crucially), we have every reason to expect a little better than .500 record for the 2016-2017 season. That's when the heat'll be on Eddie. RU MBB has now played enough games this year that we know we have a couple of players returning next year who would see some minutes on good B1G teams--Sanders, maybe Freeman, Laurent shows some spark--while the others are ordinary role players, or tend to be erratic,or have a weakness in their game. But...if you keep the returnees in an intact unit and they are well coached, they can get better and rise to the middle of the pack, If players leave, however, next season could be EJ's last. Kudos to him for being willing to take over after the Mike Rice mess and restore some credibility, but next year will be the one where he has to show marked improvement.

I share in this line of thinking as well. Just hard to repeat it when people take 25 years of losing out on a HC with no practice facility and a YMCA level weight room after every loss. I see progress. We are shooting better, more athletic, longer. I know people don't want to hear it but we're very young. 4 out of 5 starters are 1st or 2nd year players.

I see this year as 2002 under GS when Buffanova happened...it will be rough...next year I hope will be like 2003, when RU football went 5-7 and were far more competitive...this is really year 2 for EJ...I really wanted him here, and hope he succeeds...we really need wings...

I understand why part of you would want to give him an extension but right now, there is no basis for it. There has been zero progress and no incomings for 2016. He has to win some games, upgrade recruiting otherwise you can't throw good money after bad. The talent level has been upgraded but now you have to coach/win games.

With this new AD, I don't think he will hesitate to let Eddie go after this year if he doesn't see improvement by years end.

Disagree. I don't se Hobbs making 2 major hires in his first year. 2016-2017 is the decision year.

Buyout of EJ is like $2mm after this year and $1mm after next. Also, if RU keeps him passed June 2016 he gets a 100k bonus.

Absent the money, he'd be gone after this year. But $2mm is a lot to eat and so it's likely after next year.
