March 18, 1880, 143 years ago today, the State Legislature votes to make Rutgers U the NJ Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) under the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862. People from New Brunswick, and especially people from Rutgers U, lobby unceasingly to get this honor, and we were happy to beat Princeton U for it*. Better known today as the Rutgers Cooperative Extension (RCE), they still host many programs, maintaining the mission of science-based education in communities throughout our state. Originally housed in NJ Hall on College Avenue Campus, the organization is currently located at 88 Lipman Drive, Cook Campus. See more about their mission, and watch a short video about their current programming through the link below.

*Please note: This isn’t the only time Rutgers U defeated Princeton U. A few years earlier, Rutgers beat Princeton at the first college football game ever held, November 6, 1869, New Brunswick, NJ. RU RAH 📣 😉.

I'm not sure you're entirely correct. Rutgers was designated New Jersey's land grant college in 1864, just after the enactment of the Morrill Act, the federal legislation that provided for land-grant colleges. The NJAES's importance is that it was part of Rutgers' compliance with the terms of the Act. https://njaes.rutgers.edu/about/milestones.php
