I know he’s got potential and can defend - but he’s really struggling to find an identity in the offense. He’s better starting since he wouldn’t be able to give us an offensive lift off the bench, but really have never seen a huge game from him since he’s been here. Would love to see that.

I was worried he was going to get a penalty on that one dunk, lol. Isn't there a rule about hanging on the rim??

The ref was about to throw the flag

they will allow some degree of holding onto the rim if the dunk is in traffic or to allow a player to avoid injury. T’s are pretty rare for hanging on the rim these days

That’s why i think happened here.

yes but his momentum was so extreme that if he let go of the rim he would have fallen to the floor. I saw it as him protecting himself and not showboating.

I think it is fair to feel concerned about his place in the lineup. I think he is doing fine though. He isn't a primary scoring option, but he is an important secondary scoring option and he needs to defend and rebound. Mathis has holes in his game. He is good for one clutch 3pter a game, which has been very valuable in a few of our wins. He is a slasher but has had a hard time finishing in the paint the past few games. His free throw shooting should be at least 75% for a guy who attacks the rim, and the fact that he isn't there yet really hurts his game. Yeah, he's a slasher, but Young is showing that he can slash in the paint even better than Mathis and hit is Free throws.

This team has scorers that have a more diverse method to putting up points and lead the team in scoring on any night. I think the guys we can count on to possibly lead the team in scoring are...

Geo
Yeboah
Young
Harper
McConnell

While he doesn't need to lead the team in scoring, getting around 10pts a game from Myles is more important as well.

So Mathis has to fit in as a clear secondary option on the offensive side of the ball and pick his spots. I think he has done a good job of fitting in with the offense and not trying to do too much.

And there will be nights where it is all clicking for him in the paint and from 3pt and he might be in the top-2 in scoring. And that will be awesome. But we don't need him to be a primary scorer right now. And if he improves his game and figures out his outside shot better or improves from the charity stripe the way that RHJ did, then we can see Mathis matter more. Right now, he's contributing pretty well for me

It’s whining.... I think it’s the way many were raised. I have to tell a few that sit near me to stfu sometimes. Grown ass men whining (look at me crap) is worse that fingernails on a chalkboard. You see it in their posts too.

I think he does have an identity on offense and he’s had huge moments at critical times for us. He’s a very physical grinder who can run very well and get to the paint. He also has a knack for some big shots when he plays within himself.

He was responsible for the first 12 points.

Agree!! Watch the first 4 or 5 minutes of the IU game. Was quite possibly the best stretch of basketball Montez has played while On the Banks.

Kid just played game 48 of a 120+ game career here. Patience. It's coming.

Montez was awesome in the first 3 minutes but then played out of control and was hurting the team on offense later in the half. I disagree that he has accepted his role. He still wants to try and do too much. There is a reason he in olayed 18 minutes. When Mathis starts to calm down and play within his abilities Rutgers will be so much better

The chemistry of any team has numerous parts. Some are destined to be the most visible while others just implement important segments to make it all work.
We have a real team that, obviously, is causing our opponents fits. Nice not to be a one trick pony.

We could make the same argument concerning Young. Last night was another game where he had several shots just roll off the rim, after a very nice move to get there. You blow the layup, it hurts the team also

I vote to keep starting Mathis, let him play his game, and pull him out if he over does things....

Looks to me like he's playing his heart out, not forcing shots and playing to win. If he hasn't accepted it it's at least not showing up on the court.

Agree with this...he has gotten real good fighting thru screens off the ball. He makes the extra pass too. Definitely not showing on the court!

He accepted it because his minutes were cut last night after he playing out of control for a stretch. He was brilliant in the first few minutes

It's clear this team has a chemistry about them and in Pike's words "shares the game". Every post game box score shows just how well-balanced this team truly is.

Terrible Take. Mathis has really started to come into his own and realize where his value lies. Defense and running in transition. I have been most surprised the last couple games at how well he has been passing the ball. That tells me the game is starting to slow down and he is seeing the court.

I think the above is correct but I love the way Pike is pulling them in and out of games and coaching them up as he does. Energy has its place and both players are very talented. Staying within an offense when you feel you can do it all yourself can be difficult.

oh, not complaining about the players, and Pike is doing a great job...

I usually don't pay attention to specific player subs, but I did notice that, late in the game, it was Johnson on defense, subbing Mulcahy on offense....like clock work..... thought being if Indiana were to start fouling, we would rather have Mulcahy shooting them than Johnson, but wanting Johnson in to swat away shots

lol I’d like to be in the OP’s head for about 5 minutes...it’s gotta be a fun place!! :Eyes: :See:[cheers][banana]
I don't think he is having any fun. He veches about everything. That can't be healthy. He is also dead wrong most of the time.

Fans are watching games for the 1st time in years and in some cases, only equate impact to shooting and scoring.

If you remove Montez from the defensive equation, teams would be getting into the 60s with ease, now they are struggling to get to the 50's.

He makes timely plays and has improved his shot from distance, with a little more rotation.....and hit a timely 3 vs Penn State, which regained momentum. He has to develop a slower paced offensive game, but that is going back into the lab this spring and summer and working on his game and adding to the elements of what he does well already.

I don't envision a path without this type of guard on the RU roster going forward and why I was very happy to have another player (Mawot Mag), coming into the fold, that embraces defense, rebounding, pestering opponents and being able to guard 1-3 or 4. If scoring was difficult now for some opponents we play, wait until we add another plus defender off the bench and don't even let me think about another shot blocking Center added to the fold (Cliff or Shema Osborn).

You don't rise to the top 10 in a national ranking defensively without Mathis on the court, smothering opponents for 15 to 25 minutes a game. Watch Penn State's guards and they are all able to get their own shot off with ease, can get to the paint, make running shots and everything else from 3, they jack up shots without hesitation.....and on the other end of the court, they have no defensive care in the world, and allow Marcus Carr of Minnesota to ring up 27 PTS, 9 ASTS and 6 REBS and people are wondering how Penn State has dropped 3 in a row.

You cannot lose Josh Reaves, 1st team all defense off your roster last year if you are PSU and have Rasir Bolton transfer, who was also a willing defender last year, and have guards only interested in trading baskets and have Carr go bananas on the offensive end....At some point, stops on defense are more important than points on offense. PSU would kill for Montez Mathis on the defensive end, there's a reason RU is winning games and it's defense, not how many times does Mathis make a perfect play every time on offense.

Mathis by this time next season, with more work on some of his offense, has all B1G potential by his senior season, but he has to put that work in on the details (footwork is the number #1 determination of scoring/shooting). Caleb is limited physically, but despite having that, has worked or been taught better footwork at a younger age....in the Illinois game, Mathis contributed because he's just more athletic and gifted than most sophomores and Caleb didn't have a strong offensive game and missed a lot of makeable shots, but Caleb's footwork on a pivot baseline turnaround jumper, was a high 4* move and shot, because he has excellent fundamentals and footwork.

Montez is another offseason away of putting those aspects together from having big junior and senior seasons. Don;t forget the baseline move and dunk vs Nebraska, which would have been a travel or missed opportunity last year. he has flashes of huge upside, it's going to happen with the development of the entire team together.

Never seen a huge game from him since he's been here? Last year he had a 7 game stretch between Maryland and PSU where he averaged almost 15 per game, and he had a game winner against then #16 Ohio State.

It was actually noted last year that his emergence forced teams to stop keying in only on Geo.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

The OP did not have a terrible take. I have been called the president of the Montez Mathis club. He has done a lot of good things here in his career. Having said that I think a lot of us were hoping/expecting he'd show more improvement in half court offense.
No, it is a terrible take given the timing of it and equating a lack of scoring to "but really have never seen a huge game from him since he’s been here." That shows OP has a lack of understanding of how you can impact a basketball game and thus is a terrible take.

Mathis has accepted and embraced his role. He's doing what it takes to win. Bad take.
I think he's starting too as well. Less of the pouting look from him which probably helps with all the winning. Just play nasty D and don't force it on offense. He makes the extra pass on the perimeter and isn't forcing drives as much. Get your buckets in transition. If he can stay happy in that role its what's best for the team.

Agree. It's coming more natural for him to be an unselfish offensive player in the half court

Montez is a glue guy and his value comes from the defensive end and what people fail to realize is those ppg do not show up in the box score and essentially are hidden points. He is tasked with guarding the best offensive backcourt player most nights and does a great job at doing so.

I actually like his game for the most part this season, he typically does not force a take and his drives have not been wild by any means. He has taken probably a couple offensive fouls on fast breaks that we could live without but he had one against Illini that I thought was a block and even last night on breaks spaced well or when it was not there did not force it. Those types of things show maturity. What would make his game go to the next level is if you could combine his toughness and ability to drive with Caleb's pull up mid range game. He still has time to evolve and develop that next step but coming out of HS this was the type of kid he was identified to be, a guy who drives and defends. Where he could get some value and I believe he did it last year at times was get a little post up game going.

Overall nothing to be upset about in his game & hoping he can develop a little more on the offensive end if needed.
