Football Max Melton & Chris Long Suspended

I stand corrected, thanks for the clarification. If this was an aggravated assault charge bc of a fist fight with injury, I’m assuming this would get kicked back to municipal court and pled out to a DP. I’m assuming the fact that this is agg assault with a weapon, this will go to a grand jury?
At the county prosecutor's discretion, 3 things can happen: 1) grand jury indictment; 2) pre indictment plea offer by the prosecutor at the 11/4 conference (could be before but not likely) and 3) downgrade to disorderly persons offense(s) and a plea deal with the municipal prosecutor. The timing on all these is in the discretion of the prosecutor as well.

You are living in an unrealistic clown world where no kid every makes a mistake. You want to ruin this kids life over something small. You're a jackass.
Your a clown that thinks this was nothing and Ok with it. Hope you don't have kids. Poor parenting leads to issues

Creating harsher penalties is what’s gonna makes these incidents less likely.
Based on what data do you make that claim? Capital punishment, for example, hasn’t been shown to be the deterrent it was claimed to be/become, so the argument from deterrence isn’t one that will work in your favor. Making a point to others by ruining these kids’ lives isn’t a fair treatment of their case. Many other things were serve to make the point for the players—one-month suspension, community service, or some other thing, but barring more nefarious details, kicking them off the team is a merciless and thoughtless approach.

Do you know who else believed in second chances?

Kyle Flood. Look where that got him and the program...

I just don't want the FB team to get caught up in another media feeding frenzy because another head coach went to bat for another kid in trouble.

Personally I'm fine with giving both kids a second chance. However it's highly risky for Rutgers as an institution to entertain this for a high profile indivdual in a high profile football program that is always under public scrutiny.

The media is going to rip us to pieces if we are lenient (rightful so when equality is in vogue). Hatchet jobs in season and the offseason. The program doesn't need this type of press distraction at a time when we are trying to grow the positive vibes around the program and grow the fanbase.

Schiano isn't flood. He's dealt with this before and he will handle it again.

What is the line that separates “a college, youthful mistake” and a crime?

is it only a “mistake” cause of the outcome? Say they paintball hits the victims eye and is permanently blinded..still just a “kid making a mistake”?

I doubt even a headline seeking prosecutor want's to piss off the whole political establishment in NJ and the RU fanbase.
I hope you are right but we have seen prosecutors put personal and career advancement ahead of seeking justice at the expense of the wrongfully accused or over indicted.

my data is every single club, job, organization ive ever been involved in. You follow the rules. If you don’t, you get kicked out.

again this isn’t a mistake. Mistakes are split second decisions someone makes.

If anything this is multiple mistakes
They made a decision to play a stupid prank. It was very unlikely that anyone would get seriously hurt from what they did because they shot at the lower body from close range (they obviously weren’t aiming for the head or eyes based on the injury descriptions to lower body and the danger of paintball is mostly the risk of shooting someone in the eye). Yes - when playing paintball recreationally it’s true that precautions such as the goggles are taken. But people still pay money to shoot at each other with paint balls for fun. We’re not talking about a semi automatic gun here.

This is the kind of thing you ground your kid for, strip them of any and all privileges, and pile on the extra chores as punishment. Not sure how long the suspension should be (at least a few games) but jail time seems extreme.

it should be the price though. If it was…this incident doesn’t occur, imo.

and committing a drive by shooting with a paintball gun isn’t a “college mistake”.
Your speculation comes with very high, non-speculative price.

I don't see any others schools with dumbass kids shooting random college kids with paint ball guns against other RU students in a drive by.
Sute there are, Oregon just this year. 3 week suspension and the two DB’s back for the OSU game. They shot a guy in the face with a paint ball gun

As you say..“strip them of any and all privelages”….like the privilege of representing their school and the state on a football field. Totally agree.

and totally agree jail is excessive

That says it all about you! Yet you would be the outrageous cry baby if this happened your kid. Hope you experience it someday as you need a real life attitude adjustment. Typical its OK clown as long it doesn't happen to me.

So the rules say that you’re automatically kicked off the team forever? You’ve never been involved with a job, club or organization that wasn’t overarchingly legalistic in its application of their rules? Besides, you’re basing your whole argument on what should happen to them on what has happened to you in your life. Maybe no one has ever shown you compassion, but they’ve sometimes shown it to me and that’s tempered me in how I treat others.

if you have children, have you ever let them off the hook or reduced their punishment for violating a house rule? Or not thrown the book at them, and then some?

You started by calling people jackasses for not agreeing with you. You're a clown.

You also keep talking about my kids (and you don't even know if I have them) so stfu you keyboard warrior.

if they broke a rule within the program..of course I wouldn’t kick them off the team,

But every job, club, organization I’ve been in..you commit a crime you’re out

Stop defending kids that do stupid things. You should STFU

'doing what's best for the team' is lame. That's code for slap on the wrist punishment. Let me guess, we will also hear how being part of the team and playing football is best for these two people because it's their support system.
Omg are you even a fan ???

Its actually in between. Sit a year. Do your community service and be back for spring practice and pay your tuition for a year.
Zero chance of that happening. Ask them to pay their own way for a year, and they'll find a school that won't. Besides, under B1G rules I don't think pulling their ship is even an option.

Like any other corporation

Rutgers needs to do what is necessary to insulate themselves from future litigation, brand image and media attacks.

If they think they can do this by reinstating these players, then fine. But I find that hard to believe.

this too. Brand image is huge.

first game at 3:30 on abc. National televised. And the main storyline for RU is two players commit drive by. Not a phenomenal look

I wonder how often this will be referenced now on ABC national TV.

Each time Bo makes a play or the secondary is playing they could talk about this.

Really disappointing. Puts a damper on the whole week. whole season and the whole program.

Ok so in a household - after sitting home for 2-3 weeks to a month - the kid does what they are supposed to do. Apologizes to all involved. Gets things back on track and punishment eventually lifted. Should be the same here. I’m not sure the proper length of time. Maybe a couple games? Perhaps more.

Thankfully most of the media is framing it a little differently than a “drive by.” The ESPN headline almost downplays it.

Most people aren't including Schiano. If you are ok with go root for Auburn. It's crazy the so many jackass's find no problem with this!
It was mentioned earlier in this thread. In August, two Oregon players were arrested for shooting a person in a face with an airsoft BB gun.

They were permitted to go into a diversion program.

By the way, the story details: "At about 11:45 p.m. Aug. 3, Eugene police were dispatched to 14th Avenue and Willamette Street for reports of "a man who had been shot in the face with a realistic-looking airsoft gun... by someone in a sedan that had driven past him," according to police reports. Three other people reported similar incidents around the same area and timeframe."

Both players were taken off suspension and permitted to play in the Ohio State game on Sept. 11

Paintball guns are typically limited to under 300 feet per second (FPS). Airsoft guns (used by the Oregon players to shoot BBs) are under 400 FPS.

"Let us observe the guns first. The fire rate is the most important differentiator and when it comes to airsoft guns, it is between 300 and 400 fps. On the other hand, paintball guns rarely reach 300 fps. In fact, many paintball fields explicitly disallow players from exceeding this threshold. It may not seem like much, but make no mistake— this is a considerable difference.

Namely, paintball ammunition is designed only to inflict a small amount of pain and besides, balls are blunt and wide. Regardless, in close quarters or point blank range, they can hurt more than little. Yet, that is still nothing compared to the notorious airsoft ammunition, which is capable of piercing various objects and human skin. This is not just due to higher fps, but also the fact that its force is not distributed over a large targeted area (ammo is smaller)."

Cristobal initially suspended the Oregon players. They were reinstated for game 1:

Mario Cristobal has been called a Greg Schiano "clone" by everybody's favorite beat writer Politi:

--------------
I have not and I will not offer any opinion on what happened with the incident or these young men. In my opinion, there is far too much speculation on both sides and all of the facts are not known. From everything that has been shown about the Meltons, they are a great family, the Bo and Max appear to be fine young men and representatives of Rutgers University. We know less about Chris Long.

The young men, the people who were injured by the paint balls and the prosecutors will hopefully come to a mutually acceptable course of action for the two young men. They may or may not get off as easy as the two Oregon players. That will be determined by the parties, the facts and the disposition of the prosecutors. Next, the University will have to determine if the two young men may remain students of the University. Then, it will be up to the parents of the two young men and Greg to determine their appropriate status on the football team. Regardless of everyone's different opinions, it would be fair to abide by what is decided.

EDIT- by the way, a huge thanks to @Antnee79 for one of the few people in this thread providing reasoned, non-emotional and useful information on how the situation could be resolved.

this isn’t “in a household” though.

this is a billion dollar business and they just made a ridiculously stupid decision to commit a crime, and in doing so royally screwed their “employer”. They should be gone

Merely because you'd lose your job for it doesn't mean I’d agree with that decision, either--we've become too much of an all-or-nothing, reactionary culture, which is partly based on how easy it is to express our opinions online in a me-versus-you, winner-take-all dynamic. That's not my approach. I don't base my sentiments about Max and Chris's situation on something that would happen elsewhere, whether in a professional workplace or not. These are young guys who will pay a price for what they did, and losing playing time and respect of their teammates, classmates, and perhaps future employers is a lot to bear. They may also have a criminal record because of it. Their screw-up doesn't mean that we should instinctively pile on additional punishments.

To put it another way, we have created a society that demands repentance but is unwilling to grant forgiveness.

You are wise.

The flaw in your logic is that if you punish your children overly harshly, they don't have the option of finding alternate parents. However, if the University and/or its football coach should determine that these two young men should continue their academic and athletic careers elsewhere, they will both find takers.

It's not a question of showing or denying mercy. It's a question of doing the right thing for all concerned.

Just putting this here due to the timing and circumstances. Not saying this was them, but I sure hope it wasn't any other athlete either... This type of stuff should not be happening, regardless of who is doing it...

This isn’t someone “effing up”. They shot people with paintball guns.

im arrested for this, I lose my job. What’s different?

Not everyone would lose their job for that. In fact, I'm not even sure most would. Especially right now.
