Where do these kids come from, and how do these schools recruit them over Rutgers? Every year at this time, when I see all the talent at mid majors, it blows my mind that even by accident over the past 30 years,Rutgers couldn't amass a great class or two. Facilities will help, but please our coaches have dropped the ball on so many levels.

A Monmouth roster plus our injuries would have been worse. With very few exceptions, mid major players, are, well mid major players they wouldn't survive in the B1G.

These teams are better than us , but would still be lower tier in a power confernce . One thing to pull an upset or two in March , but another to grind it out for 2 months .

Watching Iona last night their half court sets were very unimpressive. they looked disjointed, but still seemed to move the ball around. They definitely bought in to the defensive strategy surrounding Justin Robinson. I liked the interactions i saw with Cluess and his players. By in large I think it is easier to coach a mid major player.

Iona and Monmouth would win 3-6 games in our conference. After December 31st how often are Iona and Monmouth on a plane.

Don't know much about Monmouth's practice facility, but they have a relatively knew stadium that is beautiful and obviously blows the RAC away.

that is 2 to 5 wins more than we have. And both those teams are better than we are, even at full strength

I picked Iona to defeat Monmouth because they are tougher in close games. Monmouth choked in the last couple minutes of the game by missing critical foul shots.I still think, however, they will get a NCAA bid because of the quality out of conference road wins .

coaching and work ethic
I would imagine mid-major teams are stocked with gym rats, consummate overachievers, under recruited kids with chips on their shoulders, and fallen stars looking to resurrect their careers.

Couple that with lower expectations.

Sounds like a coach's dream, really.

Iona recruits 2nd tier new york kids like crazy - (Mike Williams types) but Cluess makes them play hard together

......and that is where we go wrong. We fish from the bottom of the 1st tier. I'll bet Cluess has a good idea about the kids he brings in to the program.

Coach Woodward does a great job in NYC.

Monmouth and Hofstra both have nice Arena's-----Iona's is very ordinary.

Monmouth and Iona can shoot and they're athletic and go 9-10 deep.

That's why they win.

Why anyone would recruit a kid under 6'5 who can't shoot boggles the mind.

Rutgers lacks lots of things for a P5 conference
1.A great HC
2 Great set of assistant coaches for a P5 conference
3 A Great and modern home court facility for a P5 conference
4.A Great Practice facility for a P5 conference
5 Over two decades of losing
They only thing that cannot be overcome is the historical record of the last two decades.

Did you watch the Rutgers Monmouth game? They were lucky to escape with a W against the worst Rutgers team in years. I watched the first ten minutes of the Iona game and they were awful. That team in the big ten would be at the bottom. Foolish to think that team could survive in this conference.

I'd like to get an update on our big ten build fundraising efforts.

Nonsense. Rutgers would be a bottom dweller in every mid major conference. So it is NOT just facilties. Many of these schools play in glorified high school arenas. But they apparently are not cursed as the Rutgers program has been for 30 years.

And the MAAC plays no defense. 18 games in the B10 would have them crying uncle

They'd win 3, 4 maybe 5 games playing a Big 10 schedule.

The small/mid majors who win a game or two in the tournament usually have rosters littered with Seniors and Juniors. We, on the other hand, average less than two recruited freshman making it to Senior Day over the last 15+years. Coaching turmoil and coaching changeover comes with a price. We have been on that carousel for the last decade plus and have not had a team that was dominated by Upperclassmen recruited as frosh since our NIT Finals team (Herve, Ax, Ricky, Wiggan).

Is there a player on the roster other than Sanders who's as good as AJ English? Jordan Washington would start for us as well.

I have been to both the RAC,when it was full and rocking against Pitt years ago when the Greer brothers played on opposite teams, and at Monmouth's new gym for a Shore Conference Championship double header. When the RAC is full, with an exciting Men's team, it blows away Monmouth simply because of sheer size and noise. It's like comparing an older MLB baseball stadium to a brand new AA Minor League baseball stadium.IMHO.

What your saying is that if the RAC is full people wouldn't notice how sh1tty it is.

English is awfully good------maybe someday but Sanders isn't on his level IMO.

If we had Iona's or Monmouths schedule...we would do better too
these teams win their weak conferences and get automatic bids for the most part

The ability to win the conference and GET the auto bid is a good selling point to players
much better than our "maybe we win one league game this year" approach we have to stick with

hey,,,even UAB and Lehigh and Austin Peay gets to go this year...yay! LOL

As others have noted, Monmouth's facilities are much newer and better than RU's. But, more importantly, they are recruiting against other mid-major teams in and outside of their conference, most of which have comparable facilities. We are recruiting against other Big10 conference teams and the rest of the P5. The facilities of the overwhelming majority of those schools absolutely blow RU's away - not even close. We can debate just how much facilities matter to recruits, but there is no debate that we have among the worst basketball facilities in the P5. That's a clear disadvantage when recruiting P5 talent.

Mike you could also make the argument that if Monmouth had the Big Ten to sell and a 8500 seat arena they would be alot better than they are now.

I wouldn't say that Monmouth's facilities are better. They are newer. So who else has better on campus facilities than RU in the Northeast? St. Johns? Villanova? Seton Hall? Georgetown? Boston College? I'll give you Syracuse at the Dome which is a football facility and Pittsburgh which has a very nice facility, Maybe Uconn is slightly better but it's also newer and they were funded by multiple National Champ Basketball teams. But those others - No. Now you want to talk the P5. We are 2 years into being a member of the Major 'Football' Power Conferences. They have the money and they had the money for decades. So don't go trying to compare Belgium Ale to Bud Light.

Exactly. The RAC bashing is ridiculous. If we won, kids would love to play here. Don't hear them complaing at old arenas like Duke, Kansas, Indiana, etc,

The RAC with some renovations can be serviceable and when sold out one of the best home court advantages. But, facilities includes practice facilities of which we have none! That's where we are way behind in the arm's race.

We have to have a practice gym. Soon

I'm saying it still "to me" feels big time arena compared to a small cozy arena like Monmouth. I stand by my comparison of older MLB Stadium to a brand new 9,000 seat Double A Stadium. One feels the "RAC" big time. The other, a nice modern Minor league Monmouth Arena, and yes, they beat us.
