The most points Rutgers ever scored at the midlands is 110 in 2015. From a quick look it appears that we can outscore the 2015 team. Here's how our team placed in 2015.

2015 110.0
133 4th Anthony Giraldo
141 4th Anthony Ashnault
157 4th Richie Lewis
174 5th Phil Bakuckas
184 8th Nicholas Gravina
197 6th Hayden Hrymack
285 5th Billy Smith Rutgers

FYI here's how points are scored in the NCAA tournament
1st place: 16 points
2nd place: 12 points
3rd place: 10 points
4th place: 9 points
5th place: 7 points
6th place: 6 points
7th place: 4 points
8th place: 3 points

Advancement Points
Each advancement in championship bracket: 1 point
Each advancement in consolation bracket: 0.5 point

Bonus Points
Each fall, forfeit, default, disqualification: 2 points
Each tech fall (w/ near fall points): 1.5 points
Each tech fall (w/o near fall points): 1 point
Each major decision: 1 point

lets start making some predictions for Midlands. I think we have some guys who are going to walk away with some heavy duty wins here.

I don't know how the bonus points were scored in 2015 so all we can go by is placement.
In 2015 we had
one 8th we match that placement or better with Kanniard and McDermott
one in 6th we match that placement or better with Shawver
two in 5th we match that placement or better with Van Brill
three in 4th we match that placement or better with Alvarez, Rivera, Poznanski and Bulsak

Getting a tech fall without near fall points seems highly unlikely.

What also seems unlikely is that not one of these makes the finals, Alvarez, Rivera, Poznanski and Bulsak. MVB can certainly place higher than 5th and O'Neill could earn some placement points.

Isn't there a former champ going to wrestle at the midlands around 184.....
If POz gets him in semi's, could be tough to make Finals.
I expect SeaBass to make the finals.

Once the brackets are released it will be easier to make predictions but Hall at 184 will be a problem for everyone. I know other graduated NCAA champs have wrestled at the Midlands but I don't know how this helps their resume.

I know Taylor did the same thing but to med it's just an ego building move.
Not sure it is an ego move. One of the reasons the Midlands was the toughest tournament in its day was because post graduates wrestled in it. Bruce Baugmgartner won 8, Joe Williams won 10 titles. Reason you go to Midlands is for competition....If Poz wrestles Mark Hall, he will be better for it. It does not count on his record, will not figure in his Ncaa seed, etc.

I remember Midlands being so tough back in the day some people thought it was almost comparable to ncaa(kinda like how some ppl think winning big ten title could be tougher)… we had our best midlands result in 2015 but I remember the field being very thin. But yeah seems like these days more people are concerned about protecting seeds then competition.

This is quite a listing but here's every wrestler going to the Midlands and their ranking.

But how many were national champs
From a post I found on themat.com.

"Dan Gable won midlands two straight years the two years after he graduated.

Big Bruce won Midlands very year from 1980 to 1987 (and graduated in 1982).

Joe Williams won Midlands at least ten times (so I'm guessing a lot of those happened post grad!)

Royce Alger won Midlands in 1994 (pinning in all five matches). He was1987 and 1988 NCAA champ and 1990 world silver medalist. He also entered midlands in 1984, 85, 87, 88. After graduating he entered in 1990, 1993 and 1994. He won 3x.

Jim Scherr won midlands at least six times including in 1987 and 1988 after already being a world bronze and silver medalist"

If the rankings hold this is how our wrestlers place. This would give us 59 placement points vs the 50 earned in 2015.

If Hall is at 184, Poz can do 2nd. I hope he doesn't stumble with this being the first exposure this year to better wrestlers.
Rivera has a good chance and probably on target for 2nd unless he shows marked improvement from last year.
I think Sammy will have difficulty finishing at seed. He won't get away with any sloppiness.
Good test for Bulsak and will be telling.
Good test for Shawver also.
MVB will make his move in wrestle-backs?
Boone has his hands full.

Rivera hasn't wrestled eierman. Different style from lee. I can absolutely see him winning that matchup last year and this year he looks way more comfortable at the weight.
Alvarez has 5 great guys in the weight. It's going to be a good test to see how he manages the weight over 2 days. Lets see some great wins and he bumps up in all rankings.
Agree with the rest. Gonna be nice to see shawver and Bulsak against better competition.

The list is very long. Teague Moore wo NCAAs and competed post grad.

I see Alverez winning Midlands. He is a guy that will cause Desanto to loose his mind and judging from how Alverez wrestles-Desanto will not be hitting his dump on a guy like Alverez. He clearly has his weight under control this year and is a problem at the weight for anyone in the country. Since his freshmen year the kid just seems to wrestle to his competition. When he wrestles a top 5 guy he steps ups and gets the job done or its a OT situation. His so called "sloppiness" is the furtherest thing from true, thats what makes him who he is. Getting into some positions most guys won't dare go into or even have the athleticism to get in that position and SCORE.

Sounds like we have a legitimate shot to be a top 2 or 3 team at this tournament

I very much hope you're right. I make my predictions without regard to what I want to see. Let's revisit this post after the show.

If Hall is at 184, Poz can do 2nd. I hope he doesn't stumble with this being the first exposure this year to better wrestlers. Poz wins
Rivera has a good chance and probably on target for 2nd unless he shows marked improvement from last year. Rivera wins
I think Sammy will have difficulty finishing at seed. He won't get away with any sloppiness. Sammy wins
Good test for Bulsak and will be telling. Bulsak top 6
Good test for Shawver also. Shawver top 8
MVB will make his move in wrestle-backs? MVB top 8
Boone has his hands full. Boone top 8

I didn't see Hall in the list of participants. If that is true, I agree that Poz has an excellent chance. I think DeSanto, if he shows up, is too high a hill to climb. Again, hope I'm wrong. I would love to see Poz win it all and if Sammy could beat DeSanto, well, he has to reach him first.

2nd or 3rd is definite within reach. If Iowa doesn't enter their top kids, first is not out of the questions. The tournament is not as strong compared to prior years. We can make history
I still think Iowa brings most of their starters. They wrestle at the duals on the 20-21st and Iowa loves the Mid-lands and as long as I can remember they bring their team to win the tournament. Will also see who Michigan brings, full strength, they are very good. If RU wrestles well, we should have a very good showing. Really looking forward to the tournament.

No Lee, Glory or Shroder at 125. Also you won't see Eierman at Midlands I don't believe. The top 125 will be Barnett Wisconsin.
