Mulcahy should start at PG

Since last year, I’ve been saying he will be the starting PG by Christmas. Not sure if he’s ready yet though. Looked good tonight but was terrible against Pitt. He’ll be starting soon enough. Wish he had a better shot but I guess if he did, he wouldn’t be here.

Kid can't shoot though. I would love for him to play the point but right now too one dimensional. You need the threat of a point who can drive and score.

They definitely need to change up the starting lineup. Mathis/Young are effective backcourt, they look like they have fun playing together. Wouldn't mind moving Mulcahy to start PG, so Mathis and Young play together more. AY should move to the starting lineup as well. Probably at the expense of Caleb but I'd rather send the message to Geo tbh.

Mulcahy should get PLENTY of time against Wisconsin. Aside from Trice they don't have anyone who'll be too quick for him.

Mulcahy looked comfortable out there. But there are two ends of the floor. And you have to shoot sometime.

Every minute that Young is in the game I cringe. Just a ball hog and completely out of control at all times. Drives into trees every time even though he's the smallest guy on our team and forces up awkward floaters. Not a winning player.

YES!! Turn the keys over to Paul... commentators said he was running the show, too! Put Geo at 2. They seem to work well. Still not sold on Young even though he had a decent game.

He can start but will end up sitting next to Carter on the bench with foul trouble.

Here is the problem.........

He is not a factor from the perimeter, Myles certainly is not, so can you start him and have either Young or Mathis in the game?

Do we really want to roll with only 2 perimeter players?

If you start Paul Geo Harper Yeboah Myles we will be terrible on the defensive end.

Right now there is no good solution. I think Caleb needs to come off the bench and get his confidence back. I just don't know who to start. The 1st person that came to my mind was Paul

I know you're upset about the loss but he was not out of control at all times against MSU. Young made some nice moves to get past his defender and get to the basket but missed the layup/shot.

He got to the free throw line tonight better than he has all season and made 6-of-7 which was helpful. He also grabbed 4 rebounds and had 3 assists and a steal. He did have 2 turnovers. If he was just making 32 percent of his perimeter shots like he did last season that would help. He had that bad miss on a three pointer with 3 minutes left. MSU almost let him shoot it because of the scouting report on Young.

I don't agree with that-----at this point in his career he isn't a shooter.

Paul has nice rotation on his shot, nice follow through. You can see he is a good foul shooter already. But Paul is a stationary shooter which limits his attempts/selections on the perimeter. Down the road hopefully with hard work he will be someone that the defense can't sag off which will open up the court more for him.

I’m thinking Paul is a better outside shooter than we think. He just isn’t looking for his shot enough right now.

To be a shooter, you have to shoot. He may have greater capacity to become a shooter than he's shown so far, but right now he's not a shooter because he doesn't shoot. He's only taking 1.8 threes per 40 min.... ahead of just Johnson, Carter, and Doucoure (none of whom have any attempts).

The fact that he went 3-10 and people are calling this a breakout game just shows how awful he’s been and /or they haven’t seen every minute of every game this year which I have. His shots are not good shots. Geo and Harper may have shot terribly but in general their shots are not terrible shots.

I think we’re going to find out that Paul can shoot.....he’s just a pass first guy which is what we need.

As soon as Paul shows a confident shot then he should get starter mins but he can’t be be a one sided offensive player and not be able to guard on defensive sets. Defenses are just going to just lay-off him if he doesn’t shoot. 8-12 footers will be just fine.

or the fact that he was the second leading scorer, T2 on rebounds, and T2 on assists. Is that good or bad?

One thing I noticed is that Paul took better care of the ball when driving into the lane. Better than some of our more veteran guys that got stripped.
I saw him drive three times. Two were bad misses but he did make a pretty assist by drawing a double team on the third.

The problem is we don't run an offense and we dont have explosive players who can consistently beat their man off the dribble to the basket. I would like to see better half court offense but if that isn't happening at least young has the quickness to make something happen. He has had issues for sure but his speed and perimeter defense is something we lack. Hopefully this past game was a step in the right direction

Personally I don't think he's ready. Needs to score more and play better defense before turning the keys over to him. I loved him in the high post like we were doing earlier this year.

His minutes will be based on matchups. That's the reason we saw so much of Young vs MSU. Paul is a baller, but he's going to have his ups and downs. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. He needs some time in the weight room too.

Mulcahy should start at PG soon... if we are to lose our next two, I bet he does start at PG come Lafayette game, and will start for rest of year.
25 Minutes a game for him As primary ball handler and PG would work wonders for our offense.....Baker would benefit the most and would suddenly become the scorer and shot maker we need

Baker is not rising to the occasion, and indeed, has regressed in terms of consistency

Not a chance he cannot even come close to guarding an opposing point guard.
He does have good court vision but he doesn’t have a good shot and that’s a problem

Lol, I was derided for saying he would be a 3 year starter at the point a few weeks ago, he is clearly going to be the guy.

The rest of the team take confident shots. They just don’t make it in. So what harm can it be if we add him on the court and he misses as much as the rest of his teammates but he also drives to the basket and distributes the ball. This season is looking more and more like a lost one again that needs silver linings to get us excited again for next year. Paul’s development can be the best silver lining for us.

if we need to him to contribute significant minutes at PG, we will finish last in the B1G.

There is literally no chance Mulcahy starts anytime this season until he shows an ability to shoot and score. The competition and scouting by B1G or conference opponents is designed to take away what players do best.

I would feel best if Mulcahy is able to provide 15 to 18 quality minutes without turnovers and exposure on defense. I just need certain aspects the staff can coach up.

Paul not taking shots or taking a bunch and missing a bunch result in neutralizing his effectiveness which is finding the open man. He needs to take some and make some to really open up his game.
