Mulcahy

I plan on seeing him during the year - hopefully several times. All I hear are superlatives from posters whom I greatly respect such as Knight 1212 and Piscataway Mike on him. Can't wait for next year!

Mulcahy is averaging over 20, 10, and 10 through 5 games (plus 3.6 steals and 1.2 blocks per game). Gill has also won all 5 games by an average of 30+ points.

Are there people on here who still think McClung is in the same stratosphere as mulcahy as far as potential team impact. I don't care if our point guard scores (though mulcahy will). I care that he can pass and facilitate an offense

I think Mergen Sina does a great job with the Gill St Bernard program, they are well coached and understand what they can or cannot do well.

Mulcahy is an interesting prospect, he actually seems to play better when the opponents are better....in AAU, he wasn't the most talented kid on the Playaz (he played with kids a year or two older when he was with the Playaz), but made others around him better, which is why I believe his game translates very well to the B1G.

Which player’s game have we seen before that looks like mulcahy’s? I’m thinking of pgs that facilitate their teammates, see the floor well, score fairly well but are great at filling up the stat sheet and especially assists.

Jason Kidd?

Before you freak out at me, I’m not saying mulcahy is going to be a lottery pick and an nba hall of famer. But does his game look a lot like Kidd’s?

After yesterday's practice, Pikiell said Mulcahy reminds him of Steve Blake, the former Maryland point guard and long-time NBA player.

Just checked the Gill-Trenton Catholic score. Mulcahy had 18 assists, and 15 points. They won by 28,as Battle had 35 for TC.

Where is the defense for these teams? I would have thought this was a scrimmage.

No wonder that Phil Collichio's teams could always compete and many times beat the so called "star teams" each year.

Best of Luck,

Looks like E was there, you can see him in the background along the baseline.

Mulcahy's game is straight dope. Looks like he's barely trying, too. Court vision is nasty. Battle's a heck of a scorer and also looks like he's gonna be a very nice college player.

If possible we should temper expectations for our young point guard. He is just another piece of the puzzle on the road to being something one day.

Paul seems like he'd prefer to score the assist than the points. Any thoughts about whether or not he'll be able to get his shot off--not really a jump shot.

According to Pikiell, we should think just the opposite. After practice yesterday, he said, paraphrasing, "Rutgers Nation should be excited about what Mulcahy will bring to the table. His court vision is unbelievable. He sees things on the floor others simply don't see. We don't have a player like him on our roster right now."

If possible we should temper expectations for our young point guard. Every year the new addition will end the drought of NCAA appearances. Let’s get to 500 once before punching our ticket to the elite 8. Some are already bashing Harper for missing 3’s and he just graduated from high school.

I am sorry, but nothing in that video helps me at all. The defense played in the game down right embarrasing. In B1G Paul is going to see a 6'3'' guy in his face with no more than a foot of room to work. GSB D was lacking, but Trenton Catholic was terrible.

As we know Paul is going to have to learn how to get through a screen and wont be able to give his defender that much room on the perimeter.

As for Sina being a good coach......I cant say I agree.

You do realize it was a highlight video of the good scoring plays? I find that they rarely show defense in these types of videos. Maybe find a video of a complete game. What the video I posted showed is that Paul sees the court, always has his head up. and GSB is a good passing team.

Greene,

Usually I think of your posts as being "Debbie Downer", but I have to agree with you from my previous post that the defense is horrendous. I know it is highlight clips, but man, why can't these teams play any defense?

That is why coach Pike says that the stars in high school never played any defense and are thrown into a situation in college where they have to LEARN to play good defense.

Mulcahy is a high 3 * to low 4* recruit based on most evaluations. I don't think anyone is placing any more emphasis on his arrival vs Jacob Young's, with the exception that Mulcahy is a 4 year player and Young has 2 years of eligibility left.

The items RU fans are asking for Mulcahy to have, lie with Young, who is a scoring first guard who can generate his own offense.

Regarding a HS game tape here, I would not expect tough defense to be played in any HS game these days. Mulcahy was evaluated mostly on his projection, not his current skill sets. He will fit in with the defense fine, is a willing rebounder and can pass the basketball. His game ( to me) never screamed out as pure PG, just where his passing would fit best.

In a traditional fashion, Mulcahy is a CG, similar to McConnell.....McConnell is a better shooter than Mulcahy is today, so the next 6 to 18 months is where Mulcahy steps up by getting stronger and improving his shooting.

I don't view Mulcahy as a one position player....he can play the 2 and not be a stationary shooter, but if left open, can score.....he can play the wing and drive/dish, which is what he does now. I would like to see Mulcahy develop a pull up jumper off the dribble and not look to pass as much. I know it's counterproductive to ask him to be more selfish, but the faster he becomes a threat to score when the chances are there, the better RU will become, because then his passing lanes will be there.

I think McConnell is the closest replica of what Mulcahy brings to the table and expectations for what happens should be around that level, entering an elite conference like the B1G. I think McConnell and his game stepping up in recent weeks has been the best thing for the roster. If you add another player at that talent level that is already a better passer with court vision, RUs other players become more effective.

Only 1 player is around 2 assists per game beyond Geo and that's Eugene. McConnell should be around 2 to 3 per game if he played more. Mulcahy with playing time can generate 4 to 5 assists per game, which is where Geo is today. Having 2 guards at 4 to 5 assists per game, would be huge for the rest of the roster, it won't require as much work to score.

Hawk,

Why(about the defense)? I admit I am not tied into the high school basketball scene like I was for many years, but why do teams not try to play tough defense anymore? Phil Collichio still preaches defense.

Changing topics(just happens to be in this post), Sometimes I have to shake my head when I read this board. All of the people that hate the NBA. The NBA has some of the greatest athletes in the world and yes, there is defense played in many NBA games. Especially the playoffs. I know there will be some morons that tell me that the soccer players are better athletes.

Best of Luck,

The question I have is can you have the offensive efficiency you need to win with a perimeter player(s) who aren't threats from the outside. I totally get what Mathis and Mulcahy can bring to the table, but don't you need perimeter players that need to be guarded 20+ feet from the basket.

Your point about what Mulcahy will be in 6-18 months is what is important. I know there has already been a transformation in his strength. Will that continue and will be able to knock down lightly contested shots from the perimeter?

Agree, and some of those TC kids seemed especially young.

Totally agree with you about Sina. Mulcahy is a good player despite him.
