My trip around RU Stadium, tailgating lots, campus roads etc (w/pix)...

Did you happen to go through Livingston? Curious if the RAC facilities are ok.
Yes, I did drive all around Busch and Livingston and no signs of any flooding by 2-3 pm, but that was true pretty much anywhere not close to a stream/river (and some spots with very poor drainage).

Thanks for the kind words Knight Shift and Bethlehemfan but there certainly others who went through the Rutgers Turf Management Program and are more qualified than I am. I do occasionally correspond with Dr Jim Murphy (the lead Rutgers turf specialist) as well as other leading university turf programs, and I read a lot of turf and agronomy related research but for me it’s more of an obsessive hobby rather than a profession.

However, if you notice the turf around the Marco Battaglia practice facility and elsewhere closer to the stadium you’ll see it is excellent. It is, of course, we’ll maintained. I don’t know if the tailgate lots are still extensively used but for a long time they were used for practices (not the football team) and other activities (intramurals, camps, informal events, etc.) and between that, parking, and that they are not being being as “highly maintained, “ they just aren’t pristine or what you might hope. If you notice, I think the Green lot turf closest to the stadium is probably better than the other lots (likely less use in my opinion).

It’s been decades since I’ve been to PSU so I can’t comment on that.

Bottom line is my opinion the turf in tailgate lots could be improved but it’s probably a matter of money and priorities.
When I worked on the Newark campus our facilities director had a term for doing the best you could with scarce funds “acceptably seedy”

We’ve come a loooong way.

The irony of this is that the turf in beaver stadium, practice fields and some of the parking lots comes from Tuckahoe Turf Farm in Hammonton, N.J.
That turf farm hosts multiple soccer tournaments a year. It’s really cool to watch them “harvest?” the turf. They use a machine that cuts it and rolls it. An 18 wheeler follows along and when the truck is loaded up it drives away and the next one pulls up.

I wonder how things are looking now around the stadium and local roadways (River Rd, 18, etc)? Crest levels should be falling throughout the day and relatively normalized by tomorrow morning.

That’s fair but not to bring up a sore point but penn state seems to be able to have decent grass lots so I always thought why can’t we? We have the best turf grass people around. Or certainly among the best.
I only made 2 trips to Penn St and one of them we parked in a muddy field pretty close to the stadium. That was probably pre-B1G for them.

Any updates? Last I could tell, it looked like route 18 didn't have any water, but was still closed. I could see the road was very dirty, but looked fine otherwise.

Just took a look at the Route 18/27 traffic cam - 18 south still looks to be closed between at least 27 and New Street, but it looks like they are working on it. Looks like 18 North is finally open - with vehicles kicking up a lot of dust in the flooded area

What year? I remember a tree in the corner of the NW end zone being there in the mid-late 1980s?
Looks like nobody got the e-mail or saw the tweet to arrive early and wear red to the game? 😀
They were wearing white shirts, ties and fedoras back then! Or varsity letter sweaters. Boola-boola and all that!

Also for those coming from Hillsborough, Amwell Rd over the canal is now opened through Millstone and beyond
Thanks! Have friends coming from there.
Funny I can get on it (514) here in Ringoes and take it all the way into NB as it turns into Hamilton Ave on campus.

Google Maps has been pretty accurate so far, and now has River Road completely open from 287 to Highland Park, with a couple of closures until midnight in Bound Brook. For 18, it still lists a few closures "reopening at midnight."

those lots are red shale with little topsoil. ages and ahes ago, before there was yurcak and the fenced in fields, there was plenty if level areas with decent grass and the more sparse/thin grass areas were not the majority. The best grassy areas were taken for athletic fieds and even the new buildings. If you reseeded everything with new topsoil you have to keep people/cars out for a year or more and work in great drainage.
