OT: Moderate to Significant Snow (and some rain SE of 95) for Sunday, 1/19.

As of 8:45 pm we have 3.3" OTG at 28F, as temps are starting to drop more quickly. That's about 0.6" the last hour, as intensity wasn't as consistently high. Guessing we have another 20 min of moderate/heavy snow, then maybe another 30 min of light/moderate snow after that, so thinking we'll get to 3.7-3.8". Still a cool storm and we're going to have this snow around for a couple of weeks, which is nice (for me).

and thats a wrap for me besides some stray slow moving snowflakes....have between 3.5-4 inches...maybe a tad over 3 on pavement

very much in line with what the hrrr was saying all day today, i think my area may have overperformed vs some other locations nearby but we shall see

mt holly and dan zarrow a bit too aggressive with 5-8 calls for my area and trenton/philly were not getting 5-6

Just went out to shovel with the little one (who is now old enough to help and wants to make money). I guess 2-3 inches? Was able to mostly push it away instead of actual shoveling. Should be fine for neighborhood sledding for the next few days.

yep sledding should be great tomorrow...closer to 4 inches on the grass and its not going anywhere for at least 7 days

Your homeowners' policy is there if Karen sues you. Worse comes to worse, it's just money. Wouldn't you feel worse if a loved one was seriously hurt? Of course you would.
 
It was sticking on shovel and auger despite spraying silicone on them so definitely not the fluffy type of snow. Wet snow might be a pain in the morning if the cold temps harden it.

As of 9:45 pm we had 3.5" OTG as intensity lessened more quickly than expected. I then shoveled, which wasn't too bad since I had shoveled the slushy bottom layer earlier and near the end of shoveling we got a bonus extended snow shower, picking up another 0.1" for a final total of 3.6". A trained spotter in Metuchen reported the same 3.5" as me at 9:38 pm and I saw a report of 3.5" in SI a few miles away. A little disappointing vs. the 4-6" NWS forecast early this morning (and my 5.1" prediction yesterday), but still a fun storm and everything looks great. Season total is up to 10.4", which is close to normal for this point in the winter.

Yeah, there was no reason for the NWS to add inches to the maps at 6am. Didn't they see the temperatures before dawn? Noticably above what was forecast the night before. It was 39 at one point in Center City yesterday morning.
The snow was supposed to start at 11am here. Everyone watching the Eagles/Rams pregame and kickoff could see it was still light rain at 3pm and beyond.

These look more final (edit: just added updated NWS reports from NWS-Philly)...I put all the NJ reports from both the NWS offices in Philly and NYC together, then the PA ones, then the NY ones. Didn't include DE/CT. I would disregard any measurements before about 9 pm, except maybe in SEPA/SNJ, as the precip wouldn't have been over before 9 pm (and I tried to take out any reports before 7:30 pm).

NWS forecast looked pretty good for the warned counties north of 276 in PA and NW of 95 in NJ and north of the Tappan Zee in NY, where 4-7" generally fell, but was low for the warned counties along 95 in PA/NJ (like Philly, lower, Bucks, SE Montco, Mercer, and Somerset (except maybe for the NW parts of those counties) and was low for almost all of the advisory counties in NJ/NY.

Biggest thing that sticks out to me is, again, the ridiculously low Central Park measurement of 1.6". LGA was 3.6" and I saw social media reports of 3+" in Manhattan, plus all of the reports right across the Hudson were around 3". I get JFK being a bit low (2.2") right on the water, so they likely had more mixing/rain, but CPK/LGA are at the same latitude and while the urban heat island effect is real, I find it hard to believe it's that much stronger in CPK than LGA.

Nice. In case you didn't know, the NWS splits Essex into east and west with the dividing line being the GSP, so you're "west" and had the warning for 5-7", so you just made it. Congratulations, lol.

Early on there was a lot of concern that the storm might go out to sea with only SE of 95 to the coast getting decent snows, which is why Lee's Thursday afternoon forecast was low on areas to the NW. To his credit, he had upped those areas to 4-8" by Friday afternoon and the first NWS forecast map Friday morning had 3-6" for that area, but they also bumped that area up to 6-8" on Friday afternoon.

I don't actually see a problem with trying to give people a heads up that a moderate to significant storm was likely and by Friday night the NWS, Lee and everyone else had the higher snows for the Poconos, Lehigh Valley, NWNJ and the Hudson Valley nailed pretty well. That's just my opinion and you're obviously welcome to yours.

Their bigger miss, IMO, was along and SE of 95 in SEPA/SNJ and up into CNJ/NNJ, where both the NWS Philly and NYC offices had a general 4-6" forecast (warnings for Philly/SNJ and advisories for CNJ/NNJ/NYC, due to the 5" warning criterion S of 276/195 vs. the 6" warning criterion N of 276/195) starting Saturday evening (they had that much Friday morning, but backed off a bit Friday night through Sat afternoon, but upped it back Sat evening) through yesterday. They obviously missed for folks in the 4-6" zone with most of those areas getting 2-4" vs. 4-6". It's a bust but not a "major" bust, IMO as ~3" of snow accumulating on all surfaces making driving a mess, as it was last night is almost as impactful as 5".

Early on there was a lot of concern that the storm might go out to sea with only SE of 95 to the coast getting decent snows, which is why Lee's Thursday afternoon forecast was low on areas to the NW. To his credit, he had upped those areas to 4-8" by Friday afternoon and the first NWS forecast map Friday morning had 3-6" for that area, but they also bumped that area up to 6-8" on Friday afternoon.

I don't actually see a problem with trying to give people a heads up that a moderate to significant storm was likely and by Friday night the NWS, Lee and everyone else had the higher snows for the Poconos, Lehigh Valley, NWNJ and the Hudson Valley nailed pretty well. That's just my opinion and you're obviously welcome to yours.

Their bigger miss, IMO, was along and SE of 95 in SEPA/SNJ and up into CNJ/NNJ, where both the NWS Philly and NYC offices had a general 4-6" forecast (warnings for Philly/SNJ and advisories for CNJ/NNJ/NYC, due to the 5" warning criterion S of 276/195 vs. the 6" warning criterion N of 276/195) starting Saturday evening (they had that much Friday morning, but backed off a bit Friday night through Sat afternoon, but upped it back Sat evening) through yesterday. They obviously missed for folks in the 4-6" zone with most of those areas getting 2-4" vs. 4-6". It's a bust but not a "major" bust, IMO as ~3" of snow accumulating on all surfaces making driving a mess, as it was last night is almost as impactful as 5".

Here's a map of the actual reported snowfall vs. the Sunday morning NWS forecast to illustrate my points above, especially the discrepancy along 95 on both sides of the Delaware between Wilmington and Trenton, in particular and then SE of 95 to the coast between Wilmington and Trenton. SE Mercer seems like the biggest miss of all with 2-3" generally vs. 5-7" forecast; eastern LI was also a pretty big miss with 1-2" reported vs. a 3-4" forecast.
