Name a few realistic candidates if EJ doesn't survive

Herb Sendek probably would be a good hire to get RU out of the rut it has been in since Waters was pushed to resign.
He won't make RU a top program, but one that's not a pushover and a program in a position to be a top one if his replacement knows how to take advantage of the type of program Herb started making RU. Sendek is a caretaker type HC that knows how to make programs better, but isn't the type to make them one of the top .

With the mess RU MBB looks like now , Herb would be a good hire to help it change direction but not the HC to make it one of the better B1G ones. Would always be close to doing that, but fall short.
After Hill brought the program down to a bad one from the Waters adequate years and Rice hurting it's reputation to make RU MBB look toxic , then the Jordan era that hasn't overcome the Rice fiasco and looks like it never will, maybe Sendek is the type of HC to get RU over the hump and once that happens look for someone capable to move RU to the next level.

Hobbs' MO has been to hire a coach who is young with no or little HC experience and who has terrific pedigree.

See Kevin Willard (Pitino) and Ash (Urban Meyer)

Thus our next coach will probably be in this mold.

Amaker no great shakes at Michigan----what makes you think he wins here ?

Ammaker is a possibility and he's done very well at Harvard. He was very mediocre at best at Michigan. I like the idea of Sendek. No, he's not the sexy pick, but he wins. Also, someone mentioned Boyle. I like him, but not here after what we've been through.

When EJ was hired, I was hoping Danny Hurley would be the one. Now that we've been down the road with EJ and Hurley's still at RI, I'm more inclined to go with someone like Sendek.

There's another coach I really like, but I don't believe he would leave and that's Lonergan at GW. I like his coaching a lot. His teams play sound ball on both ends of the court and more importantly, he develops his players and gets the most out of them.

Lonergan works for me too. Not sold on Danny at all. Bobby bigger fish. Sendak and Amaker would be wonderful.

The post season infractions he inherited at Michigan didn't help his situation. Good at seton hall and Harvard. He will treat this like a 16 hour/day job, get us players, have a plan on game night, and get us a dance to the ticket.

Corey might also stay with this hire.

Lonergan has Rutgers in his rear view mirror. If he leaves GW, he will have far better landing spots than Piscataway to choose from. Lonergan is like another GW coach who was always mentioned for Rutgers jobs and never came here ... Tom Penders.

OK and you know this how ?

Not to mention the fact that he isn't coming here. He has a better job.

I want a young up and comer who's hungry not a mid 50's retread using this job as his Golden Parachute.

We have that now.

Archie Miller would be my number one, but I think he's destined for a bigger job. I would look on K, Pitino, Matta, Roy Williams and Calipari's coaching trees.

Sign me up for 50 years olds Lonergan (49), Amaker or Sendek any day. We need stability and respectability immediately. Capel's last two teams collapsed at Oklahoma, players fled, Assistant coach trouble and NCAA investigation. No one has touched since.

Kelvin Sampson has Houston rolling, but he's borderline toxic with the NCAA and has had multiple recruiting violations....but he recruits like nobodies business and has won at every stop (except the mess at Indiana).

Houston would probably re-up him at the hint of leaving for RU, but other legitimate candidates are Lornegan, Danny Hurley and while Sendek would have RU in the NIT next year if the roster is 100% healthy, it would not be an exciting brand of basketball. Lots of half court sets and defense, which is really the only way you can rebuild a program is by defending people and rebounding.

Sendek makes the most sense, he can finish the rebuild and would win immediately. There would need to be some selling involved to get him here, but the money we would pay should be more than enough.

Sendek had only two losing seasons combined, one at AZ state and one at NC state, and that's over 20 years... Multiple NIT and NCAA appearances, We should kill for that

This. I've always liked Sendek. Extremely underrated coach. There's no doubt in my mind RU would finish .500 overall and win at least 6 B1G games in 2016-17 with these guys (plus new recruits):

Guards: Sanders, Williams, Johnson, Goode
Forwards: Freeman, Foreman, Laurent
Centers: Doorson, Diallo

Remember Sendek recruited Julius Hodge to NCST and got James Harden to go to ASU. He won't wow you but overall is pretty consistent. He won't win any titles or anything like that but with him at the helm you could stay in the middle of the B1G and threaten to make the tourney once every 4 years which what he more or less did at his most recent stops. Then when he stalls out after 5 or 6 years he would have the program on a respectable level then you make the move to higher someone else to hopefully take RU up another notch up. Plus Sendek won't be too expensive.

Little bit better than that! Coach of the year in three different leagues. 8 different tourney teams. Still able to win even against NC and Duke in the East and Arizona and UCLA in the West.

Have to think there will be other openings in power 5 conferences that he will be considered for... And that will probably pay more

Sendek is an excellent coach----too old IMO.

I want a young guy kids can relate to-----King Rice fits that mold-----gets guys from the NY Metro area. His staff at Monmouth is well connected. His up tempo style of play is something you can sell.

King went into the stands after a fan. We don't need the drama from plus press. Plus he has other personal issues.

Just spit balling another name that hasnt been mentioned. Wojo from the coach K coaching tree. Young fiery type. I forget where he went to coach now. Probably somewhere better and wouldn't come, but didn't see him listed under the coach K list above.

Amaker failed in the B1G and now is succeeding in the Ivy League. This is the guy we want to throw on the carousel? Almost comical.

This would be his 4th program. What do you think his "hunger-meter" would read?

You guys have this all wrong. You don't want Herb Sendek either. You need a young guy with hunger, that unfortunately, is on the way up using this as a stepping stone.

This is what the ideal candidate looks like
1. he starts at a major successful program for a few years as an assistant where he learns and sees the ins and outs of a program
2. he gets his break and coaches at a mid major college where he has success and it is clear he can recruit, motivate and coach (x and o)
3. he has no ghosts in his closet (special RU requirement)
4. he has a great interview
5. he envisions himself coaching UNC, Duke, Kansas one day

....and we probably just had a guy that fits this criteria, except maybe #3.

Realistic?

  • Andy Toole Robert Morris, a NJ guy.. But has the Mike Rice Connection, was his assistant who took over when Rice took RU job
  • Steve Masiello, Manhattan, but we know his baggage
  • Jim Engles NJIT, clean safe option, clearly knows how to build a program
  • The next assistant from Coach K tree, Nate James
That is 1 of the worst lists I've ever seen. No to all 3.

No to Amaker & King Rice too. Rice has Kevin Willard written all over him. I hope Hobbs doesn't hire a Kevin Willard for us as Willard had 1 good year in his 1st 5 seasons & went to 1 NIT. This year, his 6th, SHU is 12-4 but they've played mostly bad teams for those wins & lost to the good teams.

Bobby Hurley hasn't exactly lit it up @ ASU in his 1st yr but I'd probably take him over Danny. Either would be an upgrade.

Kevin Boyle is an interesting thought if we're trying to save a lot of $, as most college coaches will want the 7 years that Danny Hurley wanted last time plus big $.

As for those wanting Sendek, I know we haven't been to the tourney in decades but we should have higher aspirations than hoping to make the tourney 2 times in 9 seasons. It also took him 6 years to get to his first NCAA tourney @ NCST & 5 years between tourneys @ ASU. Plus we need a better O.

I know it won't happen but I'd overpay for someone like Archie Miller, maybe even Chris Mack, as both seem to have a higher ceiling.

Who'd we just have?

Sendek was fired for going 60-40 his last three years and an NCAA tourney bid and win as recently as 2013-2014. While it took him six years at NC State, his teams improved every year and once he made the tourney he made it five years in a row including the Sweet 16. Guy can coach and proven at P5 conferences.
