Here’s a general outline about the selection process for the NCAA’s and the NIT works,

NCAA- gives out 68 bids. 32 automatic to the winners of their conference tournaments and 36 to at large teams.

They start out with a list ranking all 353 D1 schools (new NET, KenPom, Sagarin all somehow help generate this ranking.)

Team with about a #45 ranking gets the last at-large bid.

NIT- gives out 32 bids. Automatic bids go to schools who won the regular season conference, lost in their tournament, and did not receive an NCAA at large bid.
This selection is irrespective of their ranking.

Historically this number has been between 10-12.

This leaves about 20 at large bids

Team with about a #75 ranking gets the last at-large bid.
