NJ.com: Cam Spencer has entered the transfer portal

I have to say I am shocked. The way the team looked to be constructed he should have had a very big year next year. He no longer needed to bring the ball up, and with additional shooters on the floor, other teams would no longer focus on him the way they did last year, which should have opened up a lot of shots for him. Maybe we can still get him to come back.
Guys on Twitter spaces saying he's gone

Times are changing and times suck nowadays. As they say root for the school and not the name on back of jersey. Be prepared for anything and try not to be too disappointed -- especially when you take as fact what " experts" tell you or predict. Nothing's set in stone.

Highly disagree.
For once we were going to put 2 legitimate shooters on the floor. Now we are not.
We’re still putting 2 legitimate shooters on the floor. Noah and Cam Gavin.

We would have been putting out 3

I am in the camp that this isn't devastating of a loss provided Gavin is ready on Day 1. Gavin is supposed to be exactly what Cam was and I wasn't confident having both of them on the floor together for defensive purposes (I am making assumptions Gavin as a frosh will not be strong on D).

If there is any position that can be replaced the easiest it is a 2 guard.

You're not paying attention, with Mulcahy back, there's 6 guards with Spencer. There's no room for 6 guards.

The notion that we are without a shooting guard is absurd. If you told me Griffiths wasn't coming in, then I would be concerned.

I wouldn't pay Spencer big money to stay, he's not more valuable than Griffiths, or other guards like Fernandes, Simpson.

The roster needs a 4/5, not asking Mulcahy or Griffiths to play the 4, because Spencer is your 1 position player, who can't play the PG or isn't a combo guard.

This. The backcourt/wing is more than full. Especially if Gavin and Fernandes are as good as people project.
(I still have my reservations about Fernandes but that's 100% because of his height only).
Everyone was raving about Simpson to end the year and ready to hand him the keys until Fernandes came along. Well this ensures he gets minutes.

We have always needed to upgrade the front court.
Especially until Mag returns.

Unless we go small and fast - but is Pike ready to play that way?

Think you mean Gavin.. however, he’s a freshman and Noah is very small playing in the B1G. Hopefully, it works out.

guessing an SEC Team like Auburn or Kentucky came in with a big pay day he can’t refuse…..250, 500k? how could he say no? can’t blame the kid in this day and age

The current landscape of college basketball (NIL and portal) is really putting a hit on my enjoyment of the sport

I’m not gonna predict the long term impact - maybe the younger folks like this “free agency world” we are in right now - but personally I hate it

You realize we stole Cam right from under another fanbase right?
Maybe not NIL related but I'm sure his old fans don't care. (see @RUsojo below - I was just guessing no NIL but had no actual information).

The portal brought us Cam in the first place. And also brought Fernandes - our likely starting PG.

Hope that whoever gets him gets the late season Cam who couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn when we lost 7 out of 9 games and missed the NCAA. It’s not like we were a final four team last year. Next

Conspiracy Theory time: Paul told HC Pike that he is returning. HC Pike told Cam that his role may be reduced from a combination of Fernandes, Paul, Simpson and Gavin. Not guaranteed 30mpg again. So he's looking to leave to make it worth it.

Note - I have ZERO insider information and just guessing.

I think it was an outer influence. A team coming in making him an offer that he had to take.

It's surprising but not surprising, I think this has more has to do with balancing classes. If Cam was still here, we lose 5 players between 23-24 and 24-25, Noah, Cam, Paul, Hyatt, and Cliff. We need to bridge the gap of losing 5 players in one off-season and pick up some experience for the Junior and/or Sophomore class to learn and teach the system for 24-25.

Mag is our only Jr, and 2 sophmores Derek & Woolf, 3 Freshman, Chol, Gavin and Jamichael. 24-25 becomes a really young but talented team with 1 or no years experience in Pike's defensive system. We need to fill 1 guard and 1 forward in the Jr and Sophomore class to learn and teach the young guys coming in for 24-25 otherwise we will have 8-9 underclassmen for 24-25 which will lead to all kinds of defensive breakdowns.

If we can’t hold onto Cam, our NIL is worse off than I thought.

Hope all the “never NIL” folks in here enjoy the reality that’s about to b*tch slap us

I just don’t see Gavin as a guard.

Old school thinking.
Think: PG/wing/front court
And even "PG" is getting old with teams having multiple players bring the ball up the court and initiate offense.

What's the difference between Spencer and Gavin other than a couple inches of height?

Clif even said it himself - he needs to work on bring the ball up the court and dribbling.

We now go to the portal and select a 2 guard that gets 25-30 MPG and plays in B1G.

Fernandes (28) Paul/Derek (12)
Portal SG (28) Paul/Derek (12)
Gavin (26) Paul/Derek (14)
Mag (28) Hyatt (12)
Cliff (26) Wolf (14)

A lot of Zoom offense these days.

Ridiculously late timing to announce this, and if he is transferring for more $$, this certainly feels like tampering, with the added knife twist of making the move late to make it harder for us to find a good replacement for next season. This is a real kick to the nether regions for next season's team. We were looking at a lineup with three guys that can hit 40+% from deep and Cliff down low. That would be very tough to defend.

Thanks for last year, Cam, but dang.

when guys from mid majors are getting 75k-150k, why would a program not throw $$$ at a guy like cam to come off the bench. You think the big time programs care about burning cash. These boosters are so dumb they waste 100k-200k on a guy like cam just so they can tell their buddies they helped the team win.

At this point who cares? The blame needs to be laid upon the Rutgers boosters. It is our fault this happened. We are not doing enough to come up with the cash. Simple as that.

I dont want to hear another complaint about pikiell or hobbs.... When we lose to minnesota at minnesota with the NCAA tournament on the line dont get angry. Look in the mirror. ask yourself if you want to win, open your phone, open your chase account and send 10k to best kid in the country.

Ball handling in the half court, movement off the ball, and defending quick guards.

He is a good ball handler for a HS big in the open court. Big difference in a college pressure defense. Even Simpson struggled with college guard pressure.

And I am basing this on the individual player, not a global statement.

from here on out anyone who complains about on court performance the only response needs to be "how much did you give to help the team win....

Maybe the system shouldn’t have been ruled that players get paid for doing literally nothing. No championships. No titles. NIL is the stupidest thing ever to happen to college sports. They were getting a free 100k+ education + room and board+ food to play amateur sports.

NIL is beyond dumb. The ruling in their favor is completely stupid. How many teams each year actually win an NCAA championship 1. Which means the 99% of other teams are getting “paid” to do what exactly.

As good as he was, ya’ll still missed the tourney and lost to Hofstra at home lol. Who cares. The kid Mag was way more important to keep then this guy. I wouldn’t be surprised if your staff just didn’t match it because all funds are being allocated to keep that Number 2 recruiting class intact. If I was your staff, number 1 for me is making sure Dylan, Ace, Dellquan and Luther are paid, signed and sealed. To hell with Cam Spencer. You’ll be a preseason top 15 team in 2024.

Some of these are going to go against us. More then a few are landing in our favor. Pissed off about it, of course....but all we can do is open our wallets up. RU has put into place a lot of infrastructure to help.

Don’t disagree with you but it would help to ensure we had an NCAA team this year. Of course, Bailey and Harper are projected as one-and-dones which bring a whole different set of issues…but issues I’d like to have.
