Even with our abysmal shooting performance, Dean wasn’t part of a possible 2nd half comeback….an afterthought.
Mag not an offensive player and the fact he never will be is troubling

If In fact Dean is compromised even slightly, making him a non-factor/participant… you’d think the coaches would make it clear?????

I have to assume he is still injured. The pass was terrible but that should not mean he doesn't play for the rest of the game.
If the coaches aren’t telling us he’s slightly hampered and working hard on coming back… than he ain’t

Or Mag if you need points?
I think yesterday told us Pike DOES NOT believe Dean can contribute from the 4, and without Cliff in foul trouble we will see very little of Reibs.
Disappointing
If we're relying on Mag for offense, we're in trouble.

I was very high on Reiber coming into this season. He certainly passed the eye test for me last season, especially since we saw improvement over the course of the season. Yes, there were bumps along the road, but overall, the trend was up IMO.

Certainly disappointing so far this year. Has he plateaued, or is it still injury related? Personally, I'm not writing him off yet. I still think there's usable talent there.

We thought maybe his length and shot would allow him to play the 4.
We were wrong .
Sadly, I was WAY wrong. This is beyond weird, and in fact he has regressed. The injury must be part of it. But he looks like a guy who hasn’t played much all summer. So disappointed. Mag? Dude has ZERO game.

I don’t agree because for as much as I love Pikiell he’s been anything but transparent about injuries. You watch how he answers any questions about a player’s health or status? This is not a November 2022 thing. And I think it is a disservice to the players. I have a problem with how Schiano deals with injuries too but in a violent sport like football it’s at least more understandable.

I still believe in Mag - he has the athleticism and size to be on this level. He even showed some serious signs of breaking out last year. But yeah he's just not getting it done this year. My question is if not Mag, then who? I think we need to keep riding him and hopefully he comes around.

Dean is another story. I always thought of him as someone who could spell Cliff for a few minutes - nothing more. I don't expect much from him, so I'm generally not disappointed. In reality he should probably be the 3rd option for spelling Cliff, but again if not Dean then who?

Unless Caleb is tremendously improved offensively or Mag turns things around big time, it's going to be brutal to have them both on the court at the same time.

I would have preferred Reiber over Palmquist even shooting 3s. Palmquist seems out of place out there

Dean got open looks last season because he had centers guarding him and they did not come out to challenge him. At the 4 he will have quicker athletes guarding him on the perimeter, not so easy to get open looks. If left open he can hit the three, but he won’t be open as if a slower center is guarding him.

If he's not physically compromised, it's hard to figure with Dean. Even if he's not progressed further and is only as good as last year, that should have been good for fifteen minutes.

Dean is a smart player with relatively slow reflexes. He looked extremely slow and apprehensive yesterday in limited time. He belonged on the bench. He’ll bounce back.

Reiber and Palmquist were big time misses by Pike. I've been saying this since early last season. Mag is a serviceable backup.

Teams always suffer without their lead guard, even if they aren't a leading scorer type. Mulcahy's presence on the court CANNOT be overstated! That said, when he leaves, we better have a floor general to replace him.

Mag needs to understand his role when he's on the floor. He doesn't and that's my #1 issue with his game. He's an effective defender, rebounder and put back guy. Be excellent at those 3 things. When he does things he shouldn't be doing, it absolutely kills us.

Athleticism means stugatz if you can't hoop, period. Your logic is flawed. In WHAT world do you think Mag is better than Reiber? SHOT? NO friggin way. Overall OFFENSE? Hells no. Because he runs around and flails his arms around the court? OK, sure. Basketball IQ? Again, NO friggin way. Defense? OK, on the ball pressure and speed, yes. Dean has PROVEN he can achieve success at this level. Mag has not. Proof is in production.

That said, Dean is obviously still hobbled. Not sure if his game is going to return to the level it was at seasons end last year, and TAHT is disappointing...but in no way is Mag better.

The problem is, Rutgers needs Mag to be more than that. And how is he supposed to get any more confident in his offensive game if he's just told to run around play D and collect some rebounds
Let's focus on reality. Rutgers needs Mag to NOT be a friggin turnover machine every other time he touches the ball. He doesn't have the skill nor the bball IQ to create his own shot, take guys off the dribble, or lead a fast break. Your solution is let him develop these skills on the fly? This isn't rec basketball where everyone gets their turn to shoot.

There are plenty of highly successful teams with defensive, rebounding, and hustle role players. Realize your limitations, accept your role, and strive to do it to perfection.

You put your players in a position to succeed, not ask them to do something they aren’t capable of.
With no injuries there’s definitely a place for Mag in the rotation, but when Caleb is healthy he absolutely cannot start.

🤣 ok reality, how many teams with no bona-fide offensive stars can go 3 or 4 vs 5 on offense and win without giving the other teams at least a hint that some guys may try to score?

And not saying this will happen, but sometimes the light does go on to some players at different times.

More likely that Mag will start and Hyatt goes to the bench.

Reality is you don't understand the game. You must be a chucker. I've played with guys like you.

No one is saying Mag should stand in the corner on offense and never touch the ball. There's plenty of positive contributions to be made on the offensive end without forcing shots and turning the ball over.

Good grief! Hell no!
Hyatt has some of the same issues as Mag...Poor shot selection and playing away from his own strengths. But, there's obvious offensive talent there when it comes to Hyatt. I said in the other thread that Aundre is excellent with his back to the basket on the blocks and is also very effective as a 1 dribble and up guy. He gets himself into trouble when he handles too much on the perimeter and in traffic. I know Aundre is decent from 3, but I'd much rather see him focusing on his inside game and get more touches on the blocks. Better rebounder and more physical than Mag as well. Aundre can bang inside. He should do it more.

Ok man, whatever you say 😁

Dude are you freaking crazy! That probably gets the award for the most ridiculous post of the year.
I can only assume you don’t follow Rutgers best writers or listen to any of the press conferences or interviews with Pikiell. This wasn’t my take on who I think should start this is who is most likely going to start based on everything that’s been written and said.

I mean it was pretty clear these guys weren’t B1G players, but everyone has their opinions.

The good news is that Pike bounced back with some better recruiting this past cycle

That's on the coach. He needs to tell him to stop ball handling and shooting. Not everyone on the team has to take shots and not everyone on the team has to create off the dribble. Play defense, rebound, finish on fast breaks ... that's it ... that's his role. If Pike doesn't define it for him, that's on Pike.
