Both came across well.

I liked his vision for an aggressive defense and high powered offense.

One thing I didn't like was Chris Ash's refusal to say anything about taking the program further than where Schiano took it.

Also did anyone else notice the freudian slip when he said, "I'll be working on getting 'better' players here and then quickly corrected it with 'more players' instead when asked about recruiting"? That was interesting... ;)

I,for one, am sick of every coach telling us fans how we're going to win championships just to go out and get our bell rung.

He will say that when he thinks we're good and ready to possibly do it.

!

I just responded to this in another thread:

it was the SMART thing to say, or not to say, as he didn't set himself up for criticism, ala Schiano with his "we will win championships" comment.

He seemed to be under the impression that there would be a lot of work to do on the culture front. While I do think driving the team harder will be a necessary change, my bet is he ends up being pretty surprised with how good the culture actually is.

Flood got no love in there.

Wasn't it PJ who said he had to get on players to not be satisfied and happy with what they accomplished during the 8 wins season?

There were a lot of signs that this program had issues with culture relating to just how much they really wanted to win.

There are always two ways you can go about it. You can push the idea of championships and try selling the program to recruits that otherwise didn't care. Or you can admit that you're not at the level of championships.

I think Schiano NEEDED to sell the idea of championships in order to sell the culture. Think about how few people had Block Rs on their cars or wore Rutgers hats or even wore red to the game. Schiano did a tremendous job building the culture from what it was to what it is today. The idea of winning championships was part of that. While people knew of Rutgers from ESPN's worst program list and Sports Illustrated articles like "Can Rutgers Ever Win", Schiano introduced the "idea" that we could win championships.

Unfortunately, all he got from saying that was a bunch of upset fans crying when the championships never came. Even though Rutgers as a school NEVER wins championships, that line became the focal point of many who disliked Schiano.

I think Ash did exactly the right thing. Make a fresh start. It's a new era. Hopefully championships will come, but we're not there yet. He's got to work to bring the program back to the level we were a few years ago. And then to move beyond that point, hopefully to a championship one day.

I think that started with the coach. Win or lose, they moved on the minute that game ended and all was forgotten. No consequences.

Flood would walk into the press room after getting shallacked and talk as if he'd just been to see his daughter's ballet recital.

But I think with kids at this age, they buy into passion and a mission, easily.

When you think of a bad attitude problem and a massive cultural overhaul, you're talking about problem people who you need to cycle out of a program. We may have a few but I think the vast majority will transition easily to a more intense approach.

Or, it was intentional and he's sending a message to those on the current squad.

That's funny because I just responded to it in another thread similarly to how you've responded to it above. If you go find my post and like it, I'll go find yours and like it. [laughing]

I noticed both points. I think he wants to be respectful of Schiano but fully expects to take the program to another level. Regarding the recruiting comment...definitely a slip of the tongue. He wants to be respectful plus build a relationship with the current players while also improving the caliber of player he brings in.

He and Hobbs both handle themselves well behind a microphone. Ash is the motivational type who happens to be very sharp with X's and O's.

The Schianoites must be happy he paid homage to the Sol Siler of RU football.
