Not the Christmas Present We Want - Hope Pat Mineo's Report is Wrong

My comment from April 28: "Is Vulakh expected to be healthy? Back problems can be chronic ". I'm not totally shocked at the news but am disappointed. Maybe I'm more sensitive to the news since it is Rutgers but it seems kids come to Rutgers to convalesce. Is it my imagination that every year there are multiple injuries at the beginning of the season?

Van Brill dropping weight doesn't sound promising to me unless he can do it without losing strength. If he can, hopefully he'll be more than a .500 wrestler. Jo Jo and Angelo have to go up in weight to meet someone coming down - another eight pounds on Jo Jo's back when he's caught on bottom.

The Nick thing aside, I'm glad to see Aguilar and Sammy at their respective positions. Hope they don't get injured.

I did notice two wrestlers missing from the roster. Still one or two to go in order to meet the 30 limit.
What injuries every year?

Who's missing?

Really log jammed 133-149. Very light on wrestlers 165-197. Noticed Colon and Damerjian not on Roster. Are they still with team? Donner is a warrior but seems like only option at 165. Was hoping MVB 157 and Kanniard 165 since lots of options at 149 but seems like that might not be the case. Also no real backups at 184-197.

He was actually a small 157 but 149 is his perfect weight IMO ....he is ripped right now so if he continues his end of season run from last year we might all be surprised...I believe both JoJo and Angelo have redshirts left which they can use if needed but with this being a free year for everyone it could be a blessing in disguise

There will only be 9 dual meets but a bunch of exhibition bouts at these dual meets so guys will get more than enough competition. Then Coach has to decide who goes in Big Tens and NCAAs.

SO if you are a stud Redshirt freshmen, can you win 5 NCAA Titles?
How about Mekhi Lewis, He is only a sophomore this year.

Are there rules for the redshirts?

Yes you possibly could win 5 titles.
Not sure what you are asking about redshirts.....there are no redshirts this season it is a free year. So a wrestler like Poz can wrestle this season and then next season he still has 5 years to compete in 4 seasons.

I think he meant for guys who redshirted last year, since they technically could win 5 as well.

Yeah....I was thinking Mekhi.
Spencer Lee lost his shot because of last year (I assume)
Anyone else in the mix for 5 times?

I differ on my opinion about Nick Suriano. As amazing as his accomplishments have been for this University, I question his character. He seems very self-serving and that only "he" matters. I've yet to meet anyone, who says Suriano is a good person with an approachable personality.
Think you nailed it. Will continue to root for Suriano if he continues with Rutgers but on the international level do not care what he does

Slightly off topic but it's also ridiculous that some NCAA teams are wrestling on Friday and we don't even have a freaking schedule yet. What is the taking the B1G so long?

Agree, but not surprising considering how the Big10 botched Football scheduling this year.

I would think they're basing it around the amount of Covid cases per state. New Jersey, has a much greater percentage of cases then let's say an Iowa. The Big Ten is just trying to be cautious I assume. I do agree though, that they should at least give us something for the future. Someone mentioned Colucci, and I would think he's got the spot nail down. There really hasn't a lot of positiveness in the way of McDermott. We really haven't had any great success with Juco national champions or finalist outside of Richie Lewis.

Kevin Warren is struggling mightily in his first year as a Conference Commissioner.

Obviously it's impossible for it to be entirely his fault, but yeah the optics and the lack of public leadership have been horrible for Warren the past few months.

Delany would have had a plan and made the Presidents see why it was the right or best plan to move forward with. Warren sits in the shadows and let's the Presidents dictate to him what they feel is best when it comes to athletics. The Conference now has 14 individual voices instead of one cohesive group standing behind one man. They made the wrong choice.

Every single incoming freshman is technically in the mix. Who are the true studs, if any, in this class?

With the amazing heavyweights, I did not think it was realistic to think Kerkvliet/Schultz would win 4 Titles.

He just announced wrestling in France with the US freestyle team along with Aranju and Gilman at 57 kg. There is your answer

He would still be able to wrestle in 5 duals after France.Even without France he would probably only compete in half the matches.Goodale wouldn't say 50/50 if he didn't think there was a good chance at Nick returning. My guess is it's more like 75/25 or he wouldn't have made the comment

I am sure the Suriano family and his freestyle v CB is he’s have a plan and strategy so selfishly I hope it includes being involved with RU. If not he has been the face of RU wrestling for 3 years which we all have enjoyed.

In theory Suriano would only have to come to 2 dates, there’s a quad where he can wrestle 3 matches and then pick up a 4th somewhere.

Freestyles coaches it should say
Bill on a side note, what's the dealio with McDermott? Goody seems to be quick to dismiss or kind of beat around the bush to where his progress is. I'm not too worried, just curious. I'm beside myself knowing that heavyweight is not going to be an issue for us in the near future. I would just think that good scholarship money is being used up for McDermott if he's not performing up to par.

Yes Boone is not in the mix as they say which is disappointing. He has to step it up so we shall see.

McDermott appeared to not be in B1G or even D1 wrestling shape when he came here. He clearly has to get more focused, disciplined, and stronger if he wants to to make an impact especially in this conference. Colucci coming back might be the best thing for him this year so he can focous on getting his body and mind right.

I can't imagine there will be wrestle-offs. The first match is on Friday. Goodale has said they already had "Indicator" matches and he was never a big fan of wrestle-offs in the first place.

Agree, and in most weights it is a clear decision who the starter is. And in those other weights, as you stated, the match is Friday... I am sure they have had a few indicator matches already.

If the wrestlers were aware they were in indicator matches, that sounds a lot like a wrestle-off. Semantics? Does anyone know who won the "indicator" matches?
