OC press conference

i dont think i've ever in my life seen our O line collapse the way it did the past 2 weeks. We are terrible at blocking. We have zero pocket ever.... i mean seriously. Blocking is step 1, WRs, RBS, and QBs dont matter if they have no place to go with the ball.

This is the BIG, every team has a few good players...don't we?
if we do, they certainly aren't playing well. I've said this 100 times already...i used to play some football. X's and O's are great, strategy etc all nice and relevant when you are comparing teams that are close. At the end of the day, if you can't execute your assignment, it all goes up in smoke. You sometimes have to win your 1:1 match ups, or at least scheme and develope 2:1s where you are weak. We are getting demolished in 2:1 matchups when it comes to blocking... there is no line as far as i'm concerned against OSU and UM.

Tell me i'm wrong.

The ball was snapped and guys were already in the backfield.

Maybe trying something besides a first down run up the gut so we don't always have 2nd/3rd and longs might help keep defenses guessing. Try passing on running downs and running on passing downs. Quick passes to backs in the flats, etc ... certainly can't hurt. What's the definition of insanity again?

Against Michigan: 13 rush for 42 yards (3.2 avg) on 1st down, 23 rush for -8 yards (-0.3 avg) on all other downs. Of our 13 rushing attempts on 1st down, 9 went for positive yardage and 7 went for 4+ yards.

4 passing attempts, 1 completion for -1 yards.

Against OSU: 16 rush for 35 yards (2.2 avg) on 1st down, 22 rush for 48 yards (2.2 avg) on all other downs. Of our 16 rushing attempts on 1st down, 7 went for 4+ yards.

3 passing attempts, 1 completion for 21 yards (opening play), 1 inc, 1 sack for -6.

Over the past two games, we've had 38 first down opportunities. Of those, we've rushed 31 times and attempted a pass 7 times. Of the 31 rushes, 18 have been for positive yardage (58%) and 8 for negative yardage. Of the 7 passing attempts, 1 has been for positive yardage (14%), and 2 for negative yardage (including one sack).

Even against these two Top 5 teams, we had more success staying out of 2nd and 10+ when rushing on 1st down than with passing... and that's with only passing less than 20% of the time, so the defenses are expecting the rush.

Not sure what happened to the link to Mehringer's press conference in this thread, Its not on SK.com either. I thought Ash did a good job with the press conference today. Standing up for his kids but being brutally honest about where they are. Illinois maybe 1-4 but without Grant we really need someone to step up in the passing game to keep defenses somewhat honest. Otherwise it could be another long afternoon.

I'm a bit worried. Don't know how Hawaii, Colorado, UCF, Indiana are putting up a better fight against OSU/UM.

Has the blueprint on how to completely dominate us been mapped out? I want to say the Illinois game will be better, but I feel we could get blown out by them as well. Without Grant, I don't think we can win another game and it makes me sick to say it.

Haven't seen too many play actions in shotgun formation
This is a big weakness in the one back spread offense and it is exacerbated by our lack of a real dual threat QB. A lot more deception on play action in the I formation available to a QB.

I don't know what DM's body of work will look like in the end, but right now this guy gets the benefit of the doubt from me. I get major positive vibes from him. I am rooting for him to get it done and will be patient.

Ash was asked about pro-set vs. spread in the press conference. Did you watch it? To paraphrase him, blocking is blocking, catching is catching, throwing is throwing. And we're not doing any of those things well enough. Changing offensive strategies doesn't change the requirement that blockers block, receivers get open and catch the ball, and that the QB make good throws.

I think I posted that same thing at least twice.

Part of a job a a good OC is that he keeps the DC guessing. Unless you are Alabama., where your talent is superior to everyone else, and you line up and just tell them we are coming , deceptive is part of the genius. Have you ever heard of run when they think you will pass and pass when they think you will run ? Drew has made this offense too vanilla that makes the defense job easier and our online on edge instead of firing off. When the pass rush is overwhelming the line , you throw a screen to slow them down. The defensive end comes hard off the edge , have the back chip him quick and turn around for a pass in the spot he vacated . Take a shot over the top on first down to back up the coiners, and maybe Harris or Patton beats press coverage. Use the damn tight end down the seam or keep him in to block and help Denman and then drift out for a quick pass. Run pick plays to help your wide receivers get separation.. Trying any of the above instead of run up the middle would get us a first down and maybe a score

I'm not saying that. I'm saying I don't think this guy should be an OC. He got the job because he had a cup of coffee with Urban Meyer and therefore Ash hired him. I don't think he's qualified to be making$ 500k a year to run an offense. The man has no experience. He's been out of college since 2011 and the RB coach has no experience either, he finished college in 2013. The OC called no plays to offset the pass rush. No screens, no draws, no play action. He calls for right handed QBs to roll left and throw across their bodies. The OC has to take a hit. He can't just stand up there and blame O Line and Receivers.

You could have literally pulled any one out of the stands and drawn plays up in the dirt that would have resulted in at least one first down prior to 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter. What a disgrace.
and they say its going to get worse, how bad can it get?time for the staff to start watching film of other teams, we should win on saturday , if we dont shame on this staff

We have the worst OL in the conference. What makes you think this? They've got 2 very good DE's, also, but IIRC 1 is suspended for the 1st half. If Ash is smart, and we win the toss, we'll TAKE THE DAMN BALL in the 1st half, and try to take advantage of this if so.

Rutgers does not have the worst OL in the B1G.

Which brings up another question. The only change on the o-line from last year IIRC was the loss of Lumpkin. Should that have made THAT much of a difference?
The bigger difference seems to be a much smaller playbook. The current one seems to have 2 running plays: inside zone and jet sweep. Combine that with the QB's inability to throw the ball, or run, and you have a recipe for shutouts. 5 people can't block 9.

That is true, but we kept running up the gut against an 8 man front that we were trying to block with 6 guys. No amount of good blocking is accounting for the extra free runner shooting the gap to hit Martin in the backfield. At some point the coaches or the QB has to recognize that they have to try something else or they are just giving up. I got the sense that giving up was exactly what the coaches were doing because of the lack of adjustments during the game.

Maybe not, but if so, then close. There is a little bit of talent there but, unfortunately, these kids were recruited for a different type of O and, IMHO, that's part of the problem (as it is for most of the guys we have on that side of the ball).
