C'mon 67-
You are in a very interesting music period, hard rock, Motown, folk ballots, English invasion, Elvis, Doo Wop hold overs.

I've found in your era you either went the way of The Stones or you stayed traditional, is there anything to that?
It is hard for me to answer your question. I always walked to "the beat of my own drummer", to paraphrase Thoreau; but I loved dancing to "Satisfaction", "Woolly Bully", and "Shout". I could compete with almost anybody in traditional party drinking games such as "Wales Tales", but I also loved traditional folk music like "Four Strong Winds" or "Blowing in the Wind". My personal favorite was "Today", an obscure ballad by the New Christie Minstrels. It was the OUR song for my wife and me during our romance. That is also why I list "Loyal Sons". It was traditional after RU games then, and it always makes my wife cry when they play it after football games. It reminds her of her father's years at RU and his athletic pursuits. Coincidentally the tune was also one of my favorite hymns as a traditional Methodist youth.

I suppose this is a case of too much information, but I do think the student population was dividing into 2 distinct groups during the mid to late 60's, the grungy types and the traditional types. There were lots of people just like me who did not get into drugs or protesting at all, but the image presented by the media paints this group as dominant.

There's Only "One Way Out"

Zap. We all count :)

Anyway my point was "back in they day" we all had limited access to music unlike the MTV generation and beyond. Now we have kids with phones, computers and TV access other than the 6 TV channelsi We had to wait until we got out of the shadow of what our parents played.

I agree that any generation of kids parents aren't the influence once we had the freedom to make our own choices. Which today is available at a much younger age.

You do bring up a good point about siblings though. Older siblings back than could have a bigger influence as they most likely introduced the "new" music as opposed to what was normally played in your house or car when you were young.

Zap. Did you settle on a single style?

I think the next thread should ask us pre-MTV generation if we are "stuck" on a certain style. I like a lot of the new rock music but can't stand the new pop crap.

Great list of songs - think I have used every one of them on a party mix at some point. Blister in the Sun was by the Violent Femmes, though, not the Verve.

2 .Desolation Row.......by Bob Dylan.....it's so great IMO that it's a really long song but it's too short
3. Gimme Shelter........by The Rolling Stones....every single time I hear it I'm recalling party days back at RU.

but three is really tough....I could easily add five or six more to that list that are that great to me.
Actually, I just thought of three more....but Zappaa said two or three....so three it is.

Oh, and RU848789.....Zappaa said two or three !
And Neil Diamond blows.

Cortez is probably my favorite Neil Young song - it's just mesmerizing. Who gives a crap what Zap said? This is the internet, not debate club, lol, and I'm less than halfway done my list.

how young are we talking? Im 27, already posted mine.

Pink Floyd, Guns N' Roses, and Ozzy from the 80's.

Most of my favorite songs are from the 80's and 90's, with grunge and BIG/Tupac being the end of the era I liked most. There is occasionally good music that is still released, much of it is so commercial and bland that you forget about it three months later. There is still some good music that comes out once in a while, like Lord Huron, The Neighborhood, or M83, its different, and not made for radio airplay which is nice. Most of my favorite bands growing up are no longer around, or have changed due to band fighting or death...Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots. At least Pearl Jam and Soundgarden is still around, Chris Cornell was awesome in concert even last summer down at PNC.

Smashing Pumpkins had a show in NYC recently, I wish I had a chance to go.

Money for Nothing - Dire Straights
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zep
Don't Stop Believin' - Journey (reminds me of the final scene of Sopranos, sadly)
Surfin' USA - Beach Boys (just listen to the guitar breakouts on that song)

If you are talking about seeing something live for the first time, went to see a Renaissance concert on a whim in the mid-70s at the Capital Theatre in Passaic. They played the same concert as the Carnegie Hall live album; this concert was a week or two after that one. Blown away how good they were and had never heard their music before that night.

I'm just going to list two of my favorites that haven't been listed yet:

* It's The End of the World - REM
How long did it take you to sing that song all the way through with the right lyrics? (I'm still not sure I've done it despite random repeated attempts at getting it down.)
I still can't (haven't really tried to sit down and learn the lyrics). It's sorta why I like it, though. In the middle of the song, I'm just like "da da da da da da da. da da da da da da da."
I didn't get past 1985 on my list yet, lol, so this might still make it. Great friggin' song and no, despite hundreds (thousands?) of listens, I can't get through the whole middle fast part, except for the part that goes, "Leonard Bernstein! Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs..." then something birthday cake, cheesecake party, blah, blah, blah, lol. Lots of fun on the dance floor when everyone yells "Leonard Bernstein!"
LOL!! I'll add this, that I mess the song up even while staring at the lyrics. I've gotten the lyrics up on my screen and played the song, and I do not think I've gotten it right even with a large-letter edition. I'll give it another whirl by this weekend and see how it goes. The challenge is on.

Ha! You think that's bad? When I saw Bare Naked Ladies play One Week (similarly-frenzied tempo) they didn't even try to sing all the lyrics.

As for my two songs, right now I'll take

Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan. Best poetry from the greatest poet of the folk/rock generation.

Call it Stormy Monday. I'll cheat a bit here and take versions by Allman Bros, T-Bone Walker (original) and Bobby Bland (the version most everyone else covers).

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (most staying power of other previous fave choices over the years)

Radiation Vibe - Fountains of Wayne

Can't Hardly Wait ("Tim" version) - The Replacements

It's funny what music can do to you. Just reading some of these song titles transported me back in time to where I was when I heard them. Who I was with, what we were doing, how I felt at the time. Such an amazing effect music has that way.

Having said that, I can't narrow my choices down to twenty, let alone three.

You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones
Siberian Khatru - Yes
Into The Mystic - Van Morrison
