Olympics Thread official or unofficial (Please no spoilers).

USA takes 1-2 in men's shot put including OR by some 23-year old man-mountain over 73-feet! Won by 2.5 feet over his teammate!!!
I just came by to see if the same poster criticizing Gabby Douglas was going to mention both of them not holding their hands over their hearts during the anthem. Guess I missed the post. LOL

Yet I haven't seen one of his fights make a network broadcast. Nor even talked about.

I had the brackets wrong in my earlier posts. The Russian was unfairly given the victory over Conlin from Ireland, but then the Russian was physically unable to fight Stevenson, and Stevenson was given the victory by default ... however, this was only half of the bracket, and Stevenson has one more fight to win gold.

I obviously still follow boxing and watch, but I am also so surprised that this is not in the national news or broadcasts at all. With Comcast, I can watch all events on TV. For me, I hit the C butten, and a different menu comes up and every event is available live including boxing.

No, they don't hate America like Gabby does LOL. The 3 ladies who medaled in the 110 meters were 0-3 in flag salute protocol. The horror.

Excuse me? Where did I say anything about Gabby Douglas? I'll take an apology now. Thanks.

Ugh @ Men's Volleyball today. Up 2 sets to 1, then big in set 4 including 22-19 late, they blow it and play for bronze instead of gold

Hopefully the U.S. Women's Water Polo team can make up for that one and knock off Italy in the gold medal game on now!

Were you the one who made the posts on the 5th page of this thread taking her to task? Then it's obvious I wasn't referring to you. Please do not hold your breath for an apology.

Then why quote me? Why not go back to the "5th page" and take that person "to task"?

But you know what was pretty cool....the reaction of the the two who won the gold and silver when they realized their teammate won the bronze.

Scenes like that make watching the Olympics fun.

Anyone catch the medal ceremony? Just prior to the National Anthem the woman giving the medal said "black girls rock". Got a chuckle out of and cant wait for the sampl to come in song in the future.

How the mighty have fallen. No one expected the men's 4x100 relay to beat Jamaica, but to finish behind Japan for the bronze is ridiculous. New blood is needed. That was one old team of runners. Japan!

These are the best runners we have. It is not ridiculous to get bronze, in fact that is very good - 3rd best in the world. There are not a whole team of better runners who somehow were not selected.

Japan - trained for a YEAR on baton exchanges. That's why they finished 2nd by .02 seconds. They passes were impeccable.

USA - probably trained for 2 weeks together and, yet again, 2 bad exchanges one of which was prior to the zone and DQ'd the team. SMH.

When will we learn?

Sure, why practice the handoff, it's only a relay race. We've made the baton pass an adventure at every meet. Learning is not part of our track vocabulary.

I assume TV ratings are all that matters with regard to revenue and coverage.
Not sure that's true or not - I simply have no data on whether there's a correlation of attendance to TV viewership. I know I've probably watched more Olympics this year than in past events, i.e., my viewing is completely unaffected by attendance at the event, but I have no idea how the "average" person responds to attendance.
It looks like there maybe a correlation, TV numbers have come back down 17% from the London games which were well attended. Maybe all the bad publicity leading up to the games about the venue where they were being held had an impact. From attendance to viewership. NBC is none to happy right now with their $12 billion dollar investment.

NBC will have to get more creative with its programming. The Tokyo games in 2020 will be a real challenge because of the substantial time zone differential.

Like the NFL, NBC says women don't focus on the competition itself but the emo "narratives" surrounding it. Between all the commercials, emo nonsense and hitchy online viewing I gave up on NBC and watched the BBC coverage.

What a GREAT and SMART race run by Centrowitz! Congrats to the young man! That's what it's all about right there!!

BTW - Yet another fairly empty stadium for track-and-field. Men's 1500, Women's 800, Men's and Women's 4 x 400 relays, and more. What a shame. Can't wait for Tokyo to see full stadiums and not hear "booing," and yells of "zika," throughout the events. Very, very much looking forward to the 2020 games and plan to make this my first (and probably only...) trip to Japan.

Also, IMHO, watch out for Japan in 2020. You can tell by these games that they are already "gearing up" to be at home. Plenty of medals and a slew of 4th/5th place finishes this year. There are sports the Japanese are looking to dominate (see: women's wrestling) and it wouldn't surprise me to see them give Russia/Germany/Great Britain/China a run for the $$$ to 2nd place in the medal count by then.

Do yourselves a favor and download the NBC Sports app. They have extensive Olympic coverage. Tonight I see they added a "Watch Every USA Gold Medal!" channel. So good.

Wow @ USA Men's Volleyball! Down 2-0 to Russia they roar back to win 3-2 and take the bronze. Not an easy task, after the choke vs Italy, but great subbing today at the right time (down 2-0), sparked this team to victory!

Kudos to the ladies for taking bronze, as well, after being upset by Serbia in the semis!

Lols, rythmic gymnastics with hula hoops and what looks like lawn darts.....time to work on the yard

Overall medal count exceeded London and Beijing. Great job especially on the track and in the pool. Women hoops were the best team in Rio, U.S. And the rest of the world. Men's hoops played lock down in semis and finals. Volleyball was slightly disappointing but both bronze medal games were redemptive.

Ryan Lochte should not be the takeaway story of these games. Rio did just fine, despite the serious problems confronting the city and Brazil. Better than Atlanta or Lake Placid. The closing ceremonies still remain; let's see how they finish.

The IOC still sucks.
