Olympics Thread official or unofficial (Please no spoilers).

I haven't read any of the other posts. Missed the telecast this PM-went brefly to Somereset County 4-H Far where I wound up talkimg to Matt Madlinger's nephew of RU Final 4 game fame.

Just saw Adrian? win at age 35. On TV this AM Ryan Lochte said he was basically unhappy (very tectifuly) amd wants to swim in 2020. Actually thinks Phelps will be back!
Crazy winning in their 30's.

Phleps' silver is just as impressive as his gold medals. After such a harsh schedule where he managed to win both races on 35 minutes turnaround Thursday-to come back, for the most part Friday-is Hurculean!

Okay...sorry but this is funny....2 gay men on the Dutch Equestrian team are partners in real life. All good. One of them, whose first name just happens to be Peter, rides a horse aptly named...."Johnson." Yup. Gotta love it!

As a Peter +1. Maybe the horsey thing is a little too coincidental...I used to be naïve enough to question whether Bryan Adams understood the double entrande(sp) when he sang "Summer of 69". That is until I sat 6th row at a show and Bryan (after he sang the '69 line" (and wagged his tongue).

Personally I always thought funny and cute:
1) SNL's ambigiously gay duo
2) SNL's "Pat"-lookling back maybe TVs 1st "transgender" character.
Great memories of sitting around my shore house at night w my Uncle RIP (and dogs)
watching "Pat". My Uncle was fascinated by lesbians having then was working with a couple for NJ Bell in NB.

Of course "not that there's anything wrong" with the above.

I know little about soccer and less about women's soccer, but it was plainly evident to me that this year's Olympic squad did not have the look of previous iterations. They were, as a group, slower and plodding. They already had a number of close calls in the group phase. It was just a matter of time. I was not shocked.

How badly did the Swedish coach want to stick it to Lloyd and the Americans?

BTW, include me in the large # of sports fans (maybe not soccer purists) who think that deciding games by PKs is the worst thing (among many) about soccer [the PK for bullshit calls in the box is right up there]. PKs as the decider in group play may be OK as a conservation measure, but once you get to the knockout rounds, play on. Deciding the over-all champ by PK is an absolute disgrace.

Hope Solo also probably put pressure on herself and the team with the Zika pics/comments. Then she opened her mouth post game and complained about Sweden's DEFENSE? If shes gonna act like trash I have a new idea for a career where she can still play around with balls and put things in her mouth to keep it shut or at least invoke a gagging reflex thus preventing her from talking or complaining.

Time for Solo to move on and let my former neighbor and Rutgers babe Casey Murphy shine. By the way Casey almost single-handedly took out UVA in the penalty kick phase keeping UVA much off the board and then scoring herself. That's (That was) #1 UVA for those of you who don't know or remember.

Agree about Morgan. She was "hyped" by SI - over Carli - before the WC because she's photogenic, et al, but she is far inferior talent-wise, to Carli, as well as a few of the girls coming up I believe.

It's not her fault she's overhyped and she's not "far inferior talent-wise" to Carli (remember Carli didn't become a juggernaut until the past few years and they have very different roles). She's had a great career, despite some injuries and has had some very important goals, including a great goal last night to tie the game. The US dominated yesterday's game, but just couldn't quite finish and their keeper made some very good saves. It happens. Disappointed how critical some of you have been about one of the US's best teams, overall.

They lost in the quarterfinals. These women have huge advantages. The team they played before Switzerland was filled with girls who play soccer part time.

Our girls should be dominating. A QF loss is completely unacceptable on any level.

Again, the whole team each had SI covers with their individual pics after winning the last World Cup or Olympics. Had Solos and caRlis but lost via storage payment.

We're disappointed (and rightly so) because of the bolded below...

Very appropriate that Alex Morgan is the face/body of USWS- choker. I'd sell that stock.

Alex Morgan is way overhyped

I don't see them crying about their compensation. Those women should have concentrated more on playing than what they feel they weren't making.

Worst women's soccer team we have had in a tournament.

I completely agree. With all the hype she gets you think she would score more or make great goal scoring passes. I don't watch much soccer but when the USA plays I always watch. I always tell my wife watch out for the girl Morgan she's supposed to be good(based off of what others who know more than me say), but then goes on to do nothing.

e5 - what I said I was that I was "disappointed how critical some of you have been about one of the US's best teams overall." Everyone's disappointed in the outcome this year, but my issue was with what I thought was over-the-top criticism of the team and especially Alex Morgan.

Officially, it wasn't a loss. The match ended in a draw. Sweden (not Switzerland) then advanced by winning the penalty kick lottery.

But that aside, what does it mean to define any athletic outcome as "completely unacceptable"? At least RU fans can respond by not renewing season tickets. But when our Olympic team suffers a completely unacceptable loss, what is there to do? Renounce our citizenship?

World Record set in the 400meter by Van Niewkirk (sp?) of S Africa, interesting story his coach is a 74 year old woman. He sets it from Lane 8 !

100 M final coming up w Usain Bold and Justin Gatlin. Awesome night for track and field. America has 2 women coming up in the 1500 M as well, Simpson and Rowdhury (sp?)

Bolt is just otherworldly with his acceleration over the last 50 meters. Other than being tired of training, I see no reason why he couldn't do at least one more Olympics (he'd be almost 34) and if he stayed healthy, I assume he'd likely still be the favorite.

Nobody has yet been able to overcome his combination of late burst coupled with his length. Don't know that anyone ever will.

That was an Epic 400m performance!!!! Breaks a 17 year old record!!

other worldly really by how much he broke the record. I'm starting to wonder if the track is short by how much the WR's were broken by in the mens 400 and the womens 10K. Sounds crazy buy you never know.

Think about running 4 x 100 meters in a row, each one in 10.76 I honestly think he could have broken 43 seconds as it seemed like he slowed up just so slightly the last couple steps.

Love the story about his 74 year old coach too! How crazy is that?

Simone Biles slipped and won bronze. I'm not confident she would have won without the slip. The girl from the Netherlands was really good and her routine was equally difficult but more creative/different from the others. Still in all it was a great competition.

Half-empty stadium last night, and again today, at track-and-field. What a shame. Heavyweight boxing gold medal bout last night was half-empty as well.

stadium will be full tonight for track. Not many people want to go watch the heats of the 200 and 1500, they are running avg college times to get to the next round, nothing to see.

Sorry I don't agree. Stadiums at every Olympics I've ever watched are "full" for all track-and-field sessions. The stadium both last night AND this morning was literally half empty. There were also women's 10,000M (IIRC) and men's triple-jump finals this morning. Attendance has been horrible, bottom line, for the vast majority of events (including soccer matches in which South American teams weren't partaking) other than gymnastics, swimming, volleyball (sometimes) and, believe-it-or-not, weightlifting has been packed every time I turned it on.

It wouldn't be fair of me not to point out that Logoa Stadium, home of rowing (to which it was typically empty) and kayak/canoe, was full today at about 8K for 4 finals. Well done fans! Good to see!

As empty as I have ever seen an olympic stadium. Track and field attendance tonight is pathetic.

Every event is televised, and it might be expensive to attend in person. Why would anyone care whether there is good attendance or not ? It doesn't matter to me at all

Because at Rutgers monitoring attendance is an Olympic sport. They even sell attendancetards at the book store.
