Olympics Thread official or unofficial (Please no spoilers).

Wow. Gabby Douglas with no hand over her heart during the SSB. What's up with that

WOW-the gymnastics team just all seemed to peak (or should I say reach perfection at once. All a sudden Laurie Hermnandez looked like a bubbly Goddess. UTTER DOMNATION. Makes me REAL angry thec team gets cut to in 2020.

It's like dumbing down the tests so people can pass. The fewer gymnasts we have, the better chance everyone else has.

Rio is a pit. It won't be the last time someone is robbed there as an Olympian.

Here is a crazy stat. Not sure how many Olympians RU has, but USC has 45 in these games alone.

They seem to be pretty behind on getting the tickets out this year. I haven't gotten any type of notification yet and we are already almost in mid-August...

WOW Serena Williams lost. The Williams sisters were absolute no shows in RIO.

Also re the lack of hand over the heart is that a national or team protocol? Personally in school we did that for the "pledge of alliegence" but neither myself or my friends ever do pre game. yada.

3 things here:

1. Gabby was so obviously different than what the other 4 girls were doing it stood out to me and to a lot of others, as evidenced by Twitter and other social media reactions.

2. Every American athlete that has, thus far, won a gold medal, has stood at attention with hand over heart so either they know or were instructed in the proper way to stand. A few have sang along a little. One has sobbed uncontrollably and Phelps welled up with tears last night.

3. Most importantly: it's proper code for what to do when the anthem is played.

(b)Conduct During Playing.—During a rendition of the national anthem—
(1) when the flag is displayed—
(A)
individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
(B)
members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
(C)
all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

(2)
when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

i'm one of the most patriotic people there is, never fail to say every word of the pledge, with my hand on my heart, but since when is that a thing for the national anthem? Standing at attention yes, but the hand on the heart has always been taught to me only for the pledge, and just to be respectful and stand at attention during the national anthem.

Man what a rough sell for this morning's track and field session:

- women's Heptathlon events (110 Hurdles, High Jump, 200, shot put)
- men's 800M heats
- men's discuss qualifying
- women's shot put
- women's 100M heats

- women's 10,000m final

...you get your lottery tickets (just an example, not sure if they held a lottery as they have for many other Summer Olympics...) in the mail, see "track and field," then "Day 1, Session 1," and cringe "oh well." There is virtually nobody there. Maybe 10K or so in a stadium that holds about 80K. Tough, tough sell anywhere in the world.

I'm loving these Olympics, Phelps and our women's gymnastic team is so much fun to watch. I'm looking forward to Track and field soon.

Best thing is we have something great to watch before College Football starts. Although tomorrow I will be at the Rutgers football scrimmage, trying to observe as much as possible.

Kind of like getting tickets for the relay prelims in swimming. Teams like the US don't even use the same swimmers that will race in the finals.

It's been a GREAT summer sports-wise:

- Euro Cup (every 4 years)
- Copa Centenario (a South American event that was played here and included North American nations)
- Wimbledon/British Open/US Open
- Olympics

Women's soccer down 1-0 to Sweden. Need to step up now.

I'm gonna say it again: they have ZERO "flow" to their game right now. Carli is making passes that to the right spots and nobody is there. Solo should have come out further off her line to cut the angle on that goal. They're getting beat up all over the field by Sweden whenever we touch the ball. Basically: blah.

Going down. This team hasn't played well yet in the whole tourny. Maybe, they're not that good.
